Do you pray for the patients?

Posted: Jan 9, 2011

I sometimes find the patient's I type for in very sad situations and cannot help but stop in my tracks and offer a prayer for them.

Other times, sad or not, I just feel compelled to stop and pray for them.

I pray all the time for the patient's and their families. I wish I could reach out to them and help in some way. Prayer is all I can do.

I work for a psychiatric clinic that sees a lot of homeless people who sometimes can't even afford their medications, yet have serious mental illnesses. Like you, I can't help but stop and pray for them. Good to see I'm not the only one that does this :)

Prayers for patients - almost every day

[ In Reply To ..]
I do a lot of ER and there are so many times that I pause within and at the end of the report and offer a prayer for the patient and/or their family.

I also used to have an ER doctor who would dictate, I guess what you'd call a "prayer statement" at the end of some of the reports on his most difficult patients/cases. That was really heartwarming to know that there are some doctors out there who do this also.

Can someone answer this? - anonymous

I am not religious but wondered if someone who is can answer this question I've always wondered about. I really don't mean to offend anyone but would like some thoughts on this. Does anyone know if it really helps to pray for someone who is ill or in a difficult situation? Has anyone ever studied this? For example, if someone has cancer and people pray for that person, does that person have a better chance of recovering or living longer than someone else? And if God can make that happen, why did he let the person get cancer in the first place. If one person has lots of people to pray for him/her and another one doesn't, does the former person have a better chance of recovering from some illness? Does God prefer people who have other people to pray for them?

Power of prayer - has been studied

[ In Reply To ..]
There are quite a few studies that have been/are being done about the power of prayer and whether it does a patient good. General consensus is that is does.

Just google "power of prayer research" or "power of prayer studies" and that should bring up some good links to get you started in reading about it.

I've had the same questions myself. My view is that praying for someone or being prayed for is powerful in that it makes you realize you are not alone which can give you some emotional strength (also it helps the pray-er to think outside their own little world and about what others are going through). I never really got behind the concept of the prayer chain, but when my husband was having surgery my neighbor had her church pray for him. I found out about it later, and I have to say that it made me feel oddly happy, though I don't think it makes a difference to God how many people are praying for you. You matter to God as an individual. The Bible has several examples such as the shepherd looking for the *one* lost sheep, etc. Just the opinion of someone who wasn't allowed to play cards on Sunday because of her Scots Presbyterian grandmother! (And I still feel guilty about cards on Sunday, go figure.)

I'm one of the few that actually believes prayers can heal. I believe the "healing prayer" has to be by a true Christian, however, and not just a Sunday church-goer. I believe, of course a prayer said by anyone at anytime gets God's attention, but for the miraculous to happen (and it STILL does) it takes more than an occasional "believer".

There are times when the stories dictated place the burden on my heart to pray for the patient and/or the family. Examples are when a woman has a miscarriage (I've had one and know the agony), when there's a tragic accident and someone has died or the family has been advised to remove them from life support, when someone in their 30s or 40s with kids under 18 are told they have a terminal illness, and other similar situations.

Years ago I worked for a cardiac surgeon who would ask every patient if they minded if he prayed for them. I'd say over 99% of the time they'd appreciate it and the few that rejected it he'd tell them that he'd pray that they'd open their hearts to prayer and that it never hurt anyone to have a prayer said for them.

Anybody Ever Pray For Patients?Apr 08, 2012
I do reports for a big hospital in the midwest and see a lot of cancer reports, anorexia, car accidents and sometimes I just feel so overwhelmed by it that I have to stop and pray for the people in the  report. Obamacare Funding Running Low For Patients Feb 16, 2013
Tens of thousands of Americans who cannot get health insurance because of preexisting medical problems will be blocked from a program designed to help them because funding is running low. Obama administration officials said Friday that the state-based “high-risk pools” set up under the 2010 health-care law will be closed to new applicants as soon as Saturday and no later than March 2, depending on the state. But they stressed that coverage for about 100,000 people who are now enrolled ...

Medicare Fines Hospitals For Too Many Re-Admitted PatientsOct 01, 2012
Is this how Obamacare is going to "pay for itself?" What about those complications that are not the hospital's fault? How are they going to rate which complications are due to hospital care and which are due to patient noncompliance? I would think this is a really tough decision to make. _______________ WASHINGTONIf you or an elderly relative have been hospitalized recently and noticed extra attention when the time came to be discharged, there's more to it than good customer service. ...

Raising The Medicare Eligibility Age Would Cost Patients About Twice As Much,Dec 06, 2012
"When economists and policymakers worry about the long-term fiscal crisis, what they’re mostly worried about is Medicare. That’s why a persistent idea during this fiscal cliff season is raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67. It’s an idea that appears superficially to have many virtues. Bringing the Medicare retirement age into line with the Social Security retirement age seems logical. The change is simple to describe to journalists and the public."  & ...
