2 former Gitmo prisoners behind terror plot on NW Airlines

Posted: Dec 28, 2009

Brian Ross reports via The Blotter that 2 former Guantanamo prisoners are now believed to have been behind the terror attempt on Northwest Airlines flight 253. Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison [...]

I see nobody on the news is talking about the people behind it. Evidently the guy didn't have a passport or even ticket. When out of the blue someone dressed very well walked up to the counter and said something to them, and low and behold he was allowed to enter the flight. No passport...no ticket.

Why doesn't the news media focus on who was really behind it.

Obama Under Pressure to Prevent Yemeni Detainees From Returning Home - Bluejay

[ In Reply To ..]
The Obama administration is under pressure to consider transferring the dozens of Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo Bay somewhere other than their home country, given Yemen's poor record of keeping terror suspects in prison and the country's growing prominence as a staging ground for attacks.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for the attempted attack on a Detroit-bound flight on Christmas. Sources said the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, traveled to Yemen before the attempt and may have been "vetted for the mission" and supplied with explosive material while there.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration needs to decide what to do with the remaining detainees at Guantanamo Bay, nearly half of whom are from Yemen. Despite concerns, the administration just sent six detainees back to Yemen last week.

But one alternative to Yemen might be next-door Saudi Arabia, which Al Qaeda increasingly is threatening.

Robert Jordan, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said the Middle Eastern nation would have a natural "self-interest" in working with the United States on the issue and called the country a reliable partner.

"The Saudis have a pretty good system of sorting out who's who. It's not perfect, but it's going to be a lot more effective than allowing the Yemenis to do what they've done in the past, which is to cast a blind eye at the effectiveness of detention," Jordan said.

"I don't think there's anybody we're going to send back to Yemen who's going to stay in jail -- no one has," said Stewart Baker, former assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security.

All the suspects convicted of being involved in the 2000 attack on the USS Cole have either been released by Yemeni authorities or managed to escape in a 2008 jailbreak. Some of the detainees sent back during the Bush administration are now leading Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Some Republicans still feel the president should delay , if not change, his decision to close Guantanamo Bay.

"We have about 90 Yemenis left in Gitmo," said Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich. "They should stay there. They should not go back to Yemen."

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court steadily has chipped away at the Bush administration's attempts to deny the detainees legal rights. At some point, the court may rule that detainees must face trial, prompting warnings that the suspects might just end up in the United States.

"The question will be, you've got to let them go and you can't send them to another country, so what are you going to do? You let them go inside the U.S. -- this would be crazy, but that is what the default is under the law," Baker said.

The Obama administration has determined that a prison in Thomson, Ill., will serve as the next holding pen for Guantanamo detainees, though it's not clear when that facility will be upgraded to support the terror suspects.

In the meantime, lawmakers say, the United States must work to prevent Yemen, which is the poorest Arab country and has one of the weakest governments in the Middle East, from becoming the next battleground.

"Iraq was yesterday's war. Afghanistan is today's war. If we don't act preemptively, Yemen will be tomorrow's war. That's the danger we face," Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., said on "Fox News Sunday."

Yemen Says Terror Suspect Was in Country - Bluejay

Yemen's government said Monday that the Nigerian accused in the Christmas day attack on a U.S. airliner visited Yemen this year, and that authorities were investigating his activities during his stay.

In a statement, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry says Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was in Yemen from early August until early December after receiving a visa to study Arabic in a school in San'a.

Monday's statement said Abdulmutallab had previously studied at the school, indicating it was not his first trip to Yemen.

It said he was granted a Yemeni visa after authorities were reassured that he had "several visas from a number of friendly countries," the statement said. It noted that Abdulmutallab had a valid visa to the United States, which he had visited in the past.

"Authorities are currently investigating who he was in contact with in Yemen and the results of the investigation will be delivered to those concerned with investigating the terror plot in the United States," the ministry said.

Earlier Monday, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was retaliation for a U.S. operation against the group in Yemen.

I feel safer than I did while that idiot Dubya wasted all our time in Iraq while al-qaeda spread so far that we have barely a prayer of containing them now.

Don't blame him, it's Obama's problem now? That's a crock. Dubya is responsible for not getting our allies together and going after Bin Laden while the world was on our side. He squandered the good will that 9/11 granted us and ran after Saddam, the guy who insulted Dubya's daddy.

We are in deep, deep doo now, almost a decade later. Al-qaeda has cells spread worldwide, here, in Europe, who knows where, and is firmly entrenched in the middle East. Firmly. Hidden by geography and supported by the locals.

All we can do now is try to replace the incompetent boot lickers that Dubya and crew put into federal positions as soon as we come across them. With any luck, we'll get rid of them before we get blown sky high again.

Napolitano would have to cut out half her brain to run the DHS as badly as it was before this year.

If Dick was so worried, why did he push to invade Iraq instead of going after the people who caused 9/11?

The situation is critical. The mideast has been a hot spot for decades and Dubya and crew managed to pour gas on it while ignoring the flamethrower that burnt us on 9/11. Dickey has some nerve acting innocent and righteous when he had such a big part in fanning the flames.

I agree there are attempts all the time. After all, they want to kill us.

Please get your head out of the sand. The attack that started this all was during Bush's administration because the zealots knew Bush was weak. Remember that picture of him looking confused while reading with the kiddies when he heard of 9/11? By that time, Cheney was already in hiding, being the paranoid that he is.

When you shake off the sand in your eyes and ears, maybe you'll remember all the attempts after that and before Bush left office. It's well above a dozen. If you are defending Dubya and company, remember that they always claimed they couldn't tell us about all the attacks they thwarted. It was a secret, ya know.

The attacks will continue because Dubya blew the chance to get Bin Laden and al qaeda had grown and grown since 9/11. We will pay for Dubya's huge mistake, there is no doubt. The mideast is the worst it's been in our lifetimes, and we can thank Dubya for that. No president yet has solved the problem. If Obama does, maybe we should start worshiping him.

Yes, Clinton could have killed Bin Laden before 9/11, and Bush Sr. actually supported Bin Laden in the 80's. Neither of those mistakes (in hindsight) excuse the years we wasted in Iraq when we should have been going after al qaeda. Clinton's error was one of omission. Bush Sr's was one of commission. Dubya's was one of lunacy, committing us to a war when we were already involved in the "war on terror".

Dubya was the one in office when the first attack on our own soil came. He took the country in another direction instead of addressing those who killed 3k of our citizens. Now we are far behind. Can you understand that? How al qaeda has grown and entrenched itself in all the years since 9/11? Can you grasp how it is now a worldwide organization with cells operating independently so that, even if we cut off the head, the body will continue to function?

I don't ask that sarcastically. I'm serious. It is a threat akin to WW3. It should scare the pants off us. Worst of all, it may be too late to fix.

Clinton had several opportunities to "get" Bin Laden long before Bush took office but he chose not to. This was after Bin Laden planned and executed the first attack on the World Trade Centers, which happened while Clinton was in office.

Of course you can go farther back and blame others as well, republicans as well as democrats, for Bin Laden's continued threat against the US. At this point it really does not matter who is or was at fault.

What does matter; however, is the fact that our country has been weakened. Obama is a wonderful speaker and I believe that he thought that he could talk to people and produce peace. I have no problems with that, wish to God that it could happen; however, I believe that these people are beyond talking. They have it in their minds that we are a threat, will always be a threat and as long as Obama and his administration do not take some type of action (and NO I am not at all a war monger, I have 2 SILs serving in Iraq and want them home TODAY, but I am also a realistic)the threat will continue and more Americans will eventually die.

Actually, I think Clinton had the chance to get Osama but said NO.... - he was toooooo busy I guess....nm

Brian Ross reports via The Blotter that 2 former Guantanamo prisoners are now believed to have been behind the terror attempt on Northwest Airlines flight 253.

Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007, according to American officials and Department of Defense documents. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the Northwest bombing in a Monday statement that vowed more attacks on Americans.

American officials agreed to send the two terrorists from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia where they entered into an âart therapy rehabilitation programâ and were set free, according to U.S. and Saudi officials.

Guantanamo prisoner #333, Muhamad Attik al-Harbi, and prisoner #372, Said Ali Shari, were sent to Saudi Arabia on Nov. 9, 2007, according to the Defense Department log of detainees who were released from American custody. Al-Harbi has since changed his name to Muhamad al-Awfi.
