To get a post office box - when did you have to last show your picture ID?

Posted: Aug 20, 2012

Just looking for places where we have to show our picture ID in order to obtain something. I live in a small community where we chat with the precinct workers about things like "how is your grandma doing since she had surgery" or "the football team is starting out pretty good this year, aren't they" and yet they require me to hand them my picture ID when I vote. Obviously, if I didn't have one, they would know who I am and probably even know what color my house is, but that isn't the case in alot of other places. When and where did you last have to show an ID? Why is voting different when it determines the direction our country is taking? It is a very important decision and should be made by people who actually live here or for that matter, are alive. ;

10 cases of voter fraud in 12 years - No reason for it

[ In Reply To ..]
The past 12 years there has been only 10 cases of voter's fraud in this country, compared to 150,000,000 votes cast? What will photo ID solve? If those 10 people were so highly motivated to commit fraud, I bet they can get a fake ID.

Perhaps this will come back and bite the Republicans. I saw a map of some of the states showing the distribution of Democratic/Republican voters. As a general rule of thumb, Democrats live more in the urban areas and Republicans live more in the rural areas. So, who will have the greatest difficulty in obtaining voting IDs? I am thinking the the poor living in rural areas might have problem. They will have to travel a distance to get their proper IDs.

Wouldn't it be funny if the Republicans using such a dirty trick as voter suppression might manage to suppress more of their own votes than the Democrats. It would be fitting karma.

totally agree with above - empirelady

This is blatant disenfranchisement of a voting demographic. The irony doesn't escape me that the Republicans are the ones who scream about not wanting gun control, registration, etc. (on our way to communism and Hitler Germany, yadda, yadda), but suddenly, they want Big Brother to really watch over this almost nonexistent "problem" of voter fraud.

Do I think it is reasonable for folks to have some sort of ID in this day and age, sure. But, that's just my opinion. There are many in this country who don't want one, and you know what? That's their right. This is a free country. If they are citizens, identifiable enough to receive bills and pay taxes, they're identifiable enough to vote. Yeesh, my ballot comes to my mail box. I don't have to prove to anyone "who I am." Why should anyone else in the swing-vote states? That last part right there should be a huge red flag for this nonsense.

So, instead of spending money on hunting down these almost nonexistent fraudulent voters, let's go spend big bucks and time hunting for those rogue unicorns and fairies that are plaguing these critical voting states. We'd probably get more results.

Ten cases of voter fraud? You got any proof of that? - Guess you're not counting dead Democrats

Ridiculous.
Oh please, post a link proving that - and I would like to see Romney's tax returns

I'm not discussing this with you.... - empirelady
[ In Reply To ..]
... not because I can't provide proof for you; it's all OVER the internet, just Google and see the statements of what qualified legal experts from BOTH sides of the fence have found about how few actual cases of voter fraud there are, but because you clearly are not someone with whom one can have a civil discussion or debate. If you want to ask something of me in a civil tone and respectfully, I'm more than happy to have an open and honest discussion. However, I refuse to deal with someone who demands I do anything.

Have a nice day.
Thank you. I intend to. - Just google Dead Dems voting. LOL

I am Rose and I do not post under any other name....sorry to disappoint. I knew I would get flamed, but I just thought it would be interesting to document all the many ways in which we need a picture ID to do anything these days EXCEPT vote. Lets tackle the problem by helping people get a picture ID - rather than spewing hate about voter fraud. It exists - now and always has - how much? Nobody really knows and I won't Google to get the answer - if we search enough, we can all eventually find the answer we like. Maybe we could have photo IDs issued at the grocery store, the gas station, church,
Sorry Rose... - empirelady

I was getting confused with all the posts. You did not disappoint nor did I intend to flame you. Your points are valid for discussion and presented in a mature manner.

I disagree to a point about googling as there are valid sites with valid statistics.

Again, in my opinion, there are many who do not want to have a photo ID, and even some who have religions who forbid it. There are any number of reasons not to have one, a very important reason being some just plain don't want one. I feel that is their right as a U.S. Citizen. I don't feel photo IDs would be any more valid than any other kind of ID. They can all be faked, if you come right down to it.

I have just found it interesting that this is "suddenly" an issue in swing vote states, and that is my point as to the issue being a huge red flag.

Picture ID - me

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually the last time I voted! In Florida they have always required you to show your picture ID and your voter's registration before you can vote.

If you're who you say you are, then showing ID shouldn't be an issue. - xxx

I had to show my ID today in order to get into the zoo using our membership card.

So far this year I've had to show ID to:

Use my credit card.
Buy over-the-counter decongestant medication.
Buy alcohol.
Check into a hotel room.
Cash a check.
Apply for a library card.
Take exams at my local community college.
Rent a locker at the wave pool.

This whole disenfranchisement issue is bogus.

IDs in my state are free to anyone who can't afford one, whether they drive or not.

A study released in Pennsylvania in June 2012 showed that 98.9% of eligible voters had a driver's license or other form of photo ID, including 98.1% of Latinos and 97.5% of blacks. Wow! That's a lot of votes getting suppressed (rolls eyes).

True disenfranchisement occurs when a government makes its people so dependent that they cannot sustain themselves...a strategy the liberals employ to the max.

Funny how the sign by the river downtown warns against feeding the waterfowl lest they become dependent on human handouts...

Because a vote is not a po box or passport. - Guess what?

Being homeless is not a barrier to voting, so even proof of residency is not a requirement as long as they are living in one of the 50 states. On the other hand, more than 40 states or territories have at one time or another allowed NONcitizens the right to vote as long as they can establish residency. Please note. Residency is not used to EXCLUDE people, but can be used to INCLUDE them.

Illiteracy is no longer an obstacle since literacy tests were found unconstitutional in 1915, though a few states have tried to reinstitute them since then (Arizona as late as 1962; no surprise there). Being blind, quadriplegic or of advanced age....conditions that preclude driving and, therefore, the need for a DL....does not strip a person of these rights. Some religions PROHIBIT being photographed. This does not keep them from being able to travel, and should not be a reason to exclude them from voting. My ex-mother-in-law came to the States for a visit with a passport photo where she had pulled her headscarf across her face, which was 100% covered! Nonetheless, she was FREE to come and go as she pleased.

BTW, lifelong disenfranchisement of felons has been overturned in all but 2 states.

Fact is, in most instances where photo IDs are "required" there are a series of alternate forms of ID that can be used to meet criteria when one cannot be produced. States that try to enforce photo ID requirements are inevitably vulnerable to legal challenges. When it comes to voting, those challenges are upheld in our Constitution by the 15th, 19th, 24th and 26th Amendments. Check 'em out. They're real eye-openers.

The idea is to give ALL voters whose lives are impacted by government and politics equal access to the ballot, NOT to suppress those partisans some find politically threatening to their candidates' so-called election "victories."

Voter suppression is cheating of the highest order and is as UNAmerican and it gets, plain and simple.

Photo ID required - Experience in PA

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no reason why anyone should not have a legal photo ID. Our local ER requires a photo upon entering the ER as well all other services because of the fact people were using each other insurance. Also at my doctor's office I was required to show my driver's license and they also take a picture of you for double verification. There is a lot of fraud going on. It is just not limited to voter fraud.

There's a lot of fraud going on in cons media outlets. - In realtime, not even.

Larry Cafero was delivering a lengthy speech on the state budget. The photo was captioned by the Associated Press as follows: House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R- ...

The Big Picture Regarding The Hobby Lobby DecisionJul 01, 2014
I think to a lot of people, the Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case is largely about an overhaul of corporations' rights to control employees, basically a first step to more control over their lives.  Sure, it's about the birth control issue, but the "big picture" about the decision is this opening of the door to who knows what is next from big business?  The same people who are saying they don't want government to come between people and their doctor s ...
