This is a photograph entitled "first perm," dated 1914. This lady's husband was the one who invented the permanent wave, and he practiced on her. It took 7 hours! Her smile looks a tiny bit sad, like she has been through some suffering! :) Now back to my ERs...

[ In Reply To ..]My mom used to do Toni perms on me, and I came out looking frizzy. I have naturally poker straight hair, and I gave up trying to curl or wave it years ago. I just work with what I have. It's the cheaper, quicker and less stress way to go!

[ In Reply To ..]I used to have straight hair until I went to a hairdresser when the DA was in style (showing my age). The hairdresser never used anything on my air, but just used to put 'finger waves' in the back and sides. After 4 years, I wound up with the 1914 photos.
Then to add insult to injury, out came the poodle perm. Two years of those gave me exactly what I didn't want, permanent poodle hair no matter how long I grew it. Then along came the ironing board and iron to straighten my long hair.
Now that I'm older, my hair has straightened itself out on the top, but the sides and backs are still wavy and does what it wants. I ready to buy a wig. LOL
When I was young, my mom permed my hair...ONCE. After - that, she couldnt run fast enough to catch me! n/
