This is what Fox inflammatory rhetoric looks like up close.

Posted: Apr 8, 2010

This article gives a rather exhaustive and detailed account of Fox (so-called) News the inflammatory rhetoric against Nancy Pelosi and violent apocalyptic rhetoric which currently occupies talking points across all cable news networks relative to Gregory Giusti's arrest for threatening Nancy Pelosi.  The lead-in reads:

Washington, DC - Today, after the mother of Gregory Giusti -- the man arrested for allegedly threatening Speaker Nancy Pelosi's life over health care reform -- stated that Fox News was a factor in her son's alleged actions, Media Matters for America released the following statement:

"The violent language and scare tactics we see on Fox News every day have real consequences," said Eric Burns, President of Media Matters. "This is a network that ran a 14-month campaign against health care reform, which left their viewers confused and angry. The question is, now that one of those viewers has allegedly threatened Speaker Pelosi's life over health care reform, is Fox News going to do anything about it?"

BACKGROUND

On April 7, the Los Angeles Times reported that "[s]everal federal officials say the man [Giusti] made dozens of calls to Pelosi's homes in California and Washington, D.C., and to her husband's business office. The suspect allegedly recited her home address and said that if she wanted to see it again, she should not support the healthcare overhaul bill that was recently signed." The same day, Giusti's mother, Eleanor Giusti, made the following comments to ABC's San Francisco affiliate, KGO-TV:

ELEANOR GIUSTI: Greg has -- frequently gets in with a group of people that have really radical ideas and that are not consistent with myself or the rest of the family and -- which gets him into problems. And apparently I would say this must be another one that somehow he's gotten onto either by -- I'd say Fox News or all of those that are really radical, and he -- that's where he comes from.

As Media Matters has noted, Fox News hosts and guests have repeatedly used violent rhetoric and apocalyptic language to describe health care reform and other issues. Additionally, a number of network personalities have a history of issuing inflammatory remarks about Pelosi. Most notably, Glenn Beck discussed "put[ting] poison" in Pelosi's wine:

The remainder is a long, long list of examples Media Matters contends is inflammatory.

I must have missed all those programs that inflame. - Backwards Typist

I admit I don't watch every day, but I do watch at times. I have never heard any inflammatory remarks or maybe I'm watching the wrong program? I'll have to check the link, but I doubt Fox is any worse than Olberman and Maddow. Why not a tally on their inflammatory remarks?????

Did you read the meticulously researched account? - What are you saying now, that

[ In Reply To ..]
they made it all up? You do realize they are all available on video and in archive transcripts, yes?

The answer to your question would be a tally of alleged inflammatory remarks from Olberman and Maddow might be in order in the event that some democrat, leftist, socialist, communist so-and-so phones and emails republican representatives with death threats and gets themselves arrested. So far, we do not see dissent from the left side of the aisle taking this form and escalating into God-knows-where before November, now do we?

Why can't you simply stay on task and examine the talking points? That article was chock full of them.

George Soros...who has a vested interest in the proliferation of the progressive/socialist agenda.

That article is just part of the narrative.

inflammatory rhetoric and the fact that the reason so many nuts are coming out of the woodwork and there are all of these death threats directed at the politicians and their children (okay, "pro-lifers", time to back up your words), cut gas lines, etc. There are plenty who should acknowledge that they are in part responsible for this, people like "don't retreat-reload" Palin, and Mr. Rush "we need to take them out" Limbaugh, and Michele "we want you armed and dangerous" Bachmann. Talk like this stirs people up and in some cases to a dangerous level, as we have been seeing. How about taking some "PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY" for that??

Do you not have a clue? Although I do not condone - violence, ever, I see how angry

[ In Reply To ..]
the majority of the country is. Also, you take things too literally in some of what you are looking at regarding the quotes. I do understand the anger in the sense that a few people in a country of millions can take power away from the people and ruin the United States, which is what Obama and Pelosi are doing currently. I only hope we survive them and THEIR rhetoric and lies.
Yes, I have more than a clue-do you???? - Crazies take this stuff
[ In Reply To ..]
seriously and some will act on them. Those talking this way should start showing "personal responsibility" and stop talking this way. Really, step away from right vs left for a moment. Regardless of who is doing it, this kind of talk incites violence in some people. At this time in history it happens to be coming from the republican and if some are going to charge people with taking "personal responsibility" this would be an excellent way to start and show they are serious.
How refreshing to see somebody who actually gets it. - Thank you for your post. nm

Oh gag me! - Trigger Happy
[ In Reply To ..]
There are just as many loons on the left who "incite" violence. There are nut jobs in all groups and that includes tea party goers AND liberal groups as well. This is typical hypocrisy. Look at Maxine Waters talking about how the pubs are cheering on violence, etc. and yet she herself was caught on tape calling Bush a liar and getting a crowd going at a protest against Bush. I'm tired of the hypocrits here. We have anti-war demonstrators burning a flag and then stomping on it...which they are allowed to do. Freedom of speech. So why is it wrong for tea party people to protest. Seems to me that you libs are only for freedom of speech when it is your speech being shouted. The moment someone of an opposing opinion speaks up, they are inciting violence and they should be stopped.

Do you not remember the signs held in protest saying things like "Bush is the disease and his death is the cure." But how dare someone call Obama a socialist. OMG...how horrible is that. I think some of you need to take your blinders off here and stop pointing your fingers at others when your own group has done some of the same things if not worse. Get a clue!
Your moniker suits you. Did you not READ - the post?
[ In Reply To ..]
I never said that libs didn't get involved in some of this stuff, and they shouldn't. I said "at this time in history it happens to be coming from the republicans." In addition, while the protest sign you are using as an example is a lousy thing to say, it is not a threat. Things like "we need to take them out" and "we need to be armed and dangerous" are specific suggestions, at least, to the less stable members of the population to take matters into their own hands.
So because I'm "Trigger Happy" I incite violence, huh? - Trigger Happy
[ In Reply To ..]
And obviously you did not look closely at those anti-Bush signs as one said to bomb Bush.
This is what I meant by your moniker suiting - you. Your tendency to
[ In Reply To ..]
just react without bothering to read the post-like a hair trigger reaction. I did not come even close to saying that you "incite violence" but then you know that. Not even the most extreme radical could read what I posted and construe it as that. That leap was even beyond Beck, and that is really saying something.

Now, take the time to actually READ the entire post and then compare the example you gave with the ones I provided, and try to actually make a logical and rational comparison, perhaps even try to see what I was actually trying to say and then consider it before you either:
A. Accuse me saying something I did not say.
B. Insult my intelligence either by direct insult or by trying to divert.
C. Have a tantrum.

Or, if you can not respond like a mature adult with something reasonable, then don't bother responding because frankly, with this jump in logic of yours, I am wondering if you are capable of logic. I did not put up with that kind of crap from my son when he was 10-I am not going to put up with it with you.

This IS a critical time in history.  If the first black president is assassinated, it will speak volumes to the dysfunctional, criminally insane people who represent the racists in this country.

Obama has chosen to continue some Bush policies (to the ire of some Democrats), but the rabid, radical right wing, who thought all this was okay under Bush, suddenly is against it simply because it's Obama continuing these policies.  What could be the REAL reason?

Fox is airing some rhetoric that is over to top and if taken literally, and let's face it, there are crazies out there how will do so. Fox knows this and continues to allow it. Same goes for Palin, Limbaugh and Bachmann. When you say things like they are saying, a certain segment takes it literally. They are all more than aware of this and yet continue to do it. They should be held accountable if they found responsible.
Inciting to violence in the name of journalism will NEVER - be acceptable on any level.
[ In Reply To ..]
Making death threats against a public official is a criminal offense. That's why the guy was arrested, just like the one who threatened Senator Murray...a tea partier. Anyone with half a brain knows which cable news station has promoted that movement. It is as plain as the nose on your face. Nothing delusional about it. The grip would be yours to seize.
No it shouldn't and since Fox does NOT do it - there should be nothing to discuss

If OJ had said MSNBC had made me do it, would you have been as accepting of that? I don't think so. Telling Fox to accept blame or whatever of something they had nothing to do with is utterly ridiculous.

Watch Jon Stewart - Carleighs Mom

[ In Reply To ..]

Even though Jon Stewart's show is billed as a "comedy", the beginning is always very political.  Jon is a very smart man, and funny at the same time.  He brings in clips, and his opinion on things and it really clears up Faux news ... oopss ... I mean Fox news.  The thing he did recently right before health care was passed, he examined the Fox opinion polls.  Each and every anchor said "cramming it down our throats."  It was bizarre in how lax they are that they don't even care that they are BSing everyone.  They are not legitimate news ... they have an agenda and they carry it out every day.  Sarah Palin said she was tired of journalists not doing their job by simply asking questions and reporting the news instead of commenting on the news ... then she added:   that's why I joined Fox news because it is "fair and balanced".    LMAOOOOOOOOOO     They never treat anyone or anything fairly, and I can't even see one of them who is balanced!   Most especially that whack job that owns it ... Rupert Murdoch.

Polls fluctuate from one day to the next.  Even 1 week in politics is like a lifetime ... so don't count him out.  His biggest problem is that the republicans are so mad that he is in there, they block every single thing that they try to accomplish.  Then, blame him by trying to say he isn't bipartisan.  It's completely obvious what they are doing.

But, hey ... to each his own .... if you enjoy Fox then watch it ....

Me, I prefer not to have a TV station try to brainwash me with crap.

I'll stick with CNN for the real news, and when I want a good laugh I can always turn on Jon Stewart or Fox news for a good laugh!

Fox just exposes a lot of things we would not have had the opportunity to know if they hadn't reported it. A lot of people have become more politically aware than they would have been. I check up on what I am told to see if it is true. People who do crazy things decide to do that all on their own, they don't need help.

What a bunch of buloney - they have no - evidence

[ In Reply To ..]
They are making a blanket statement with no statements or facts to back up their claims.

The links are going to the same article about that crazy lune lady and her son blaming Fox for all their woes.

They won't even provide one name or statement of something that someone on Fox said that is inflammatory, violent, blah, blah, blah. Nothing.

The truth is that Fox tells the public what is going on in our government. They expose the politicians who are doing crooked deals, etc, etc, etc, and that is a threat to them so they use these blanket statements with no facts. As for the "poison discussion". There was no discussion. He jokingly said "I put poison in". It's called "a joke". Nobody actually seriously had a discussion about putting poison in her wine. Get a grip people!

If anyone is doing any scare tactics its the crowd at BSNBC.

This articles is just the same ol scare tactics to try to shut up a group that is bringing a service to the people - telling them what is going on, and that is what they are threatened by. That we the people of the country will learn what our rights are, and that we the people are learning what they are doing.

Frankly I'm surprised the people at Fox have not sued yet for slander, false accusations, amongst other things.

Guess you didnt try bold date links following each statement that - take you to the Fox VIDEOS, huh?

[ In Reply To ..]
There is absolutely no way to pretend this did not happen or that the source is making stuff up. Fox is caught on tape with its pants down and its followers are left twisting in the wind with no defense.

Yes I did, guess you didn't read my message - because I even put in quotes what was said

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry guys, you really are out of luck. You are not going to be able to shut down Glenn Beck. More people watch him than anyone on MSNBC or CNN.

It just confirms he's doing something right when you got all the lunes in the country attacking him.

Glenn Beck tells the truth. And that's what is a threat. The liberals/progressives do not want the people to know what is going on in our government. They'd rather everyone be sitting back suckin the juice watching the shows that are put on the cable to dumb down America.

Well you know what...it ain't workin folks. Glen Beck has woken the American people. He gives us the information your fave's won't. He has on guests like Judge Napalitano and others. I may not always like Beck, but he's doing a good service and telling people what is going on in this administration.

And what's the kicker of the whole thing is he does it in a "non-violent way". He does NOT incite violence. Telling people to call your congressman is not inciting violence. Telling people they can stand up for their rights and do something by contacting whoever is not inciting violence.

And to top it off, whenever any of you are asked to provide one quote of his that promoted violence you can't. You can take a word here and there and then make up something so stupid as some poison thing, but jeez, people start thinking for yourself.

You post links to ramblings of a crazy women. "Oh my son is mentally insane and it's all Beck's fault". Yeah he was insane before Beck ever came on board, but its still all his fault, blah, blah, blah.

How about focusing on real issues like what our congress is doing behind our backs. The stimulus money that was supposed to be used to create jobs here in America has been used to create jobs in China, the direction our country is headed, etc, etc. And guess what folks, more than half the country is not happy (yes, even those that voted for Obama). Lets focus on the people behind the scenes and not Obama so much, but the people who are directing him too.

There are more important issues to discuss than Beck or Fox. Get a grip!
This discussion is not confined to Beck and Fox. - It is about
[ In Reply To ..]
the relationship between their style of partisan broadcasting, the perceptions that some of their audience members develop and the actions and behaviors that ensue. In this case, we are talking about threats to violence that involve real live human beings losing their lives.

No one is trying to make the clown go away, though I would pop a cork if he did. The dialog is centered around concepts such as mob mentality and the part irresponsible reporting and news media practices play in that. THAT, my dear, is what is not going away, and one can only hope that it does not take an assassination or some other costly domestic terrorist act to get folks like you to sit up and take notice.

There is much more to this than simple partisan bickering, whether you can see it or not. Try to think outside the box for a change. I promise, it won't be fatal.
Excellent post! Believe it or not, not all posts - are partisan. Some are
[ In Reply To ..]
strictly about the connection between hate speech being used either specifically to incite some more radical and less balanced members of the audience to violent acts, or stupidly being used for ratings with no concern for what impact it can have on others. AT THIS POINT IN TIME it is largely the Republicans and Fox news who are doing it. I would say the same thing if it were MSNBC. This needs to stop, or take responsibilty for the ultimate outcome, which will not be pretty for any of us. Personally, I would rather see them stop with the rhetoric so no one gets hurts.
Mob mentality? That would be ACORN and SEIU. - nm
