Why southern places close when it snows and

Posted: Jan 8, 2010

We heard we were getting snow yesterday. This is Georgia. We might have had just a light coating but this is the issue. We have ice. No one that I know of drives good on ice. Near the Atlanta airport this morning there was a 21 car pile-up. Our interstates seem to be ok, they have had gravel and sand put out but our secondary streets are the issue here. I live on a hill, a big hill and I doubt I would want to take my nice vehicle down or even try because no sense in wasting a good car and I am sure my neighbors would not want me in their front yard. The news people are asking everyone to stay home in case they do not have to go out, very dangerous with the black ice on the street. The majority of schools let out early yesterday. So I hope when others wonder about why the south just closes down, we have ice, not really that much snow.

In my almost 3 years in SC back in the 90's, we had a dusting of snow one winter and there was mass panic, people flooding the grocery stores, etc., the minute the light snow started.

People in the south are simply not equipped for that kind of weather. You do not put snow tires or chains on your car tires like we do in the north, and are not used to driving in that kind of weather. For those of us in Ohio, we're used to it. My 16th birthday fell in January, so I did my driver's training in the winter, on snow. You learn how to pump your brakes and all the other tricks of driving on the snow and ice.

Thankfully, you don't see much down that way. I'm glad they close the schools.

Better to err on the side of caution.

So, how's all that global warming working out for ya? :-) We had an abnormally cool summer here and a bitter winter so far. Here's hoping it warms up a bit around here.

Have a great day, and stay safe. Better to stay off the roads if you're not familiar with driving in those conditions.

there's so much ice on my road, I have to put it in neutral when coming down the end of it to avoid sliding out onto the intersecting road. School hasn't canceled or delayed once this year. Yesterday, I drove 2 hours away from home for an appt.

I thought they closed in the south because a lot of people aren't used to driving in ice/snow conditions. A lot of vehicles also aren't equipped with 4-wheel drive to handle the snow (learned that on Ebay when looking at vehicles for sale:)

When we visited the south, we had to pull off the side of the road to wait out the horrendous rainstorms and hailstorms we were passing through. We don't have much of those up here.

Hope your ice melts soon!

Mass panic? I was out last night when sleeting - Closing up today

and knew without a doubt there would be the ice this morning. Our temperature is 16. With all the budget cuts going on, same has happened with DOT here. They sand the most important streets. No, we donΓ’€™t have the chains to go on cars, most time here in the south we hardly know the difference between the seasons, mild winters. It is not unusual at all to see sandals worn here in the winter months. I had already heard this winter would be different in terms of cold. Hubs truck is a 4 wheel but makes no sense at all to drive on black ice- there is no stopping vehicles on this ice. Even wreckers are unable to pull trapped vehicles out. I saw where 3 wreckers went to rescue and all 3 could not make it. I am originally from another state and I drove in the snow there but was not like it is here. Out at the store yesterday to get my kitty their food, I was saying, nope aint gonna happen, so warm and now this morning here we are at 0 wind chill factor. Heard weatherman just say we had flash freezing last night. This lady will not be moving her car today, no sense in getting it banged up. Update- 29 vehicle wreck pile-up close to airport.

I remember in SC seeing grocery stores packed one day when we started getting flurries. I can't say I blame them. A major blizzard would be devastating. Of course, this was a group of folks who were still pretty shell shocked by Hugo that had just hit a couple of years before, so I don't blame them for their panic at a little bit of snow.

I lived in Rhode Island for many years, and every one was equipped and educated about driving on ice and snow - it was a 5-month occurrence every year.

Down here, we have had measureable snow for three years in a row. I lived in the south for most of my lifetime except for an 11-year period in RI. Never saw this kind of pattern.

But yes, people are definitely not used to these dangerous driving conditions. And our state/county agencies are not equipped to handle it adequately either. The best and really only option is to minimize travel completely. Don't like the idea of kids, without seat belts, sitting in School busses running such roads. Frightening. i am happy they choose to cancel school - safer for the kids, and that's what counts.

Mississippi, are you having ice today? - Closing up

My daughter works where she has to cross 3 counties to get to work. I spoke with her last night and I would assume she has not gone in this morning. Better safe than sorry. Even if I owned chains, makes no difference because the next person out there does not. At least I am not unable to get home such as the blizzard in the 80s. Caught at the hospital that time, just could not make it home. Hubs had kids from school. I slept that night in the recovery room, had place where I could buy toothbrush and toothpaste and the RR had towels, soap and wash cloth so I was ok there. The hospital had food supplies so if you had to be caught somewhere I guess this was an ok place.

prediction of snow because in the rural areas the roads can get very bad and sometimes are the greatest in the world, they don't have the equipment needed to clear them. I live in Jefferson County (Louisville) and they very rarely call off school, they did today just because the snow we had yesterday basically turned to ice after it had been packed down and sort of melted by cars running over it. The interstates are clear, but the roads in smaller subdivisions haven't been salted or plowed yet, so it is dangerous for the school buses, and also we are in single digits in the mornings these days.

They have no salt trucks, for one thing - Michigander in GA

[ In Reply To ..]
That's how MI handles the ice - lots and lots of salt. And we've got the rusted out vehicles to prove it. You can always tell when someone's coming from a salt state, they've got it all over their vehicles.

I love the fact that GA doesn't salt their roads - and they have so many beautiful classic cars in mint condition as a result. I'm pretty bummed out at the snow here now though (near Chattanooga), and keep praying for it to warm up because my heat pump wasn't designed for these temperatures and now needs repair.

snow in Alabama - oldone

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm in Alabama. Had to chime in because Georgia and Mississippi did...we can't drive in snow or ice. No one buys snow tires or chains here...just too expensive for every 5 years or so use. Also, if the roads are closed by State Troopers, then insurance rarely pays if there is an accident. Nowhere to store enough sand for once-every-five-years use. I like that we go outside and stare at the sky when it snows...heard that turkeys are so dumb that they will drown while looking up in the sky when it's raining...bout froze my nostrils off Friday from looking at the 10 minutes of snow. Didn't drown though. Just huffed the flakes out of my nose and went on with day.

Southern Fried Green BeansNov 23, 2014
Thiis is something I make a lot.  I cannot give an EXACT recipe but can give the main ingredients and how to do it About a half package of bacon cut into peices/strips and try to separate as best as possible. 1/2 onion (optional) finely diced 6-8 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic chopped and miniced or garlic powder. I package froze green beans. Saute bacon, onion and garlic in olive oil or cannola oil.  I cook the bacon until done but not "super crispsy." Add frozen green beans to ...

Racism Still Blights Southern US Juries: StudyJun 08, 2010
By Agence France-PresseMonday, June 7th, 2010 -- 11:00 am Having an "out of wedlock child" was enough to remove a black juror from a 1998 Mississippi murder trial involving an African-American and a white victim. Since then, nothing much has changed in the old south, a newly released study has said. When it was all over, Alvin Robinson was found guilty by a jury of 10 whites and two blacks, and sentenced to 20 years behind bars for a murder he claimed was in self defense. Two years later, an ...
