When the Safety Net Becomes a Hammock

Posted: Aug 10, 2013

It's disgusting that someone who is healthy but lazy refuses to look for a job takes government handouts without feeling guilty. In fact, this guy is proud of himself.

I don't care if you hate Fox News. You seriously need to watch this. This is something everyone should be disgusted with and it was a great report by Bret Baier. If you really care about waste and fraud, in our country, you will watch it. If not, then you don't care if the taxpayer gets ripped off by people like this guy.

It *is* disgusting when people abuse the system. Unfortunately, it is nothing new. Back in the 1980's or 1990's I recall seeing a 20/20 (I believe) segment on fraud; a couple in state were recently sent to jail for a 20-year(!) welfare fraud scheme; and the list goes on. I have said for decades now that catching these thieves should be higher on the government's to-do list, but *every* administration in my adult life seems to be afraid or oblivious to the problem to do anything about it. Honestly, I am not sure if more coverage would jolt more people into reporting fraud, or spur more people into joining the fraudsters.

There was another part of the report (not linked here) that showed - Truthhurts

groups going around in the cities handing out flyers and info to everyone on the street and helping people qualify for food stamps.

I agree that waste, fraud and abuse should be high on the list. Didn't the president state that was a priority back in 2008? Not sure anymore, but it seems like he just doesn't care anymore.

Some in Congress has been trying to stop waste and abuse in not just the food stamp program, but other programs, but some in the Senate refuse to admit it's happening. Clinton was right to do what he did and why Obama "unraveled" that law and allow the waste to become worse is something I'll never understand.

BUT, so you know who is holding her hand to help her get every hand out possible? The social worker. She tells her exactly how much money she should have in her account at any given time and tells her to just "find another place" for the rest (and this is a pretty common practice from what I have heard from several different people). The social workers should be held to higher standards also, in my opinion.

I think each state has different requirements for food stamps. - me

California might be unique in that it is so easy to get a card and they check this guy's income so infrequently.

And I really, really think this has nothing to do with Obama.

Clinton had signed the welfare reform into law but Obama - Truthhurts

literally shred it to pieces very subtly and little by little.

Surfer Dude would have had to work or get training in some kind of work and apply for jobs to keep his food stamps. That's the way it used to be in the 70s, but somehow (I wasn't into politics that much then) those rules were discarded between the 70s and 90s. Clinton put them back in place.

Now Obama has taken steps to backtrack the law and make it easier once again to obtain food stamps, so we have people like Surfer Dude taking advantage of it.

During the Bush era, this was all - happening as well

I knew people who had food stamps and didn't need them because they lived with their parents (um, yeah). So they would sell them to their friends and use the money to buy whatever they wanted.

Need Advice On Safety GateNov 25, 2009
I have a friend who has had to move into a HUD apartment with her infant and toddler (husaband's whereabouts unknown, she's been unemployed for 2 years, is going to school full time now).  All of the walls are stuccoed-over concrete and there are steep concrete stairs.  There are no newel posts, just the walls (one shorter than the other) and an iron handrail...it reminds me of a fire escape stairwell in a large  building or hospital.  Anyway, I want to get her a s ...

TN Dept Of Safety And Homeland Security Revoked James Yeager's Jan 11, 2013
after the raving lunatic posted a call-to-arms YouTube video stating his intent to "start killing people" if any gun control measures are passed.  Evidently, the TDSHS was none too impressed with his "pack Your Bags Part 2" video that was supposed to be a walked back "apology."  Here's a heavily edited transcript of that rant.  I have to wonder what good 2nd Amendment apologists think this kind of Alex-Jones-inspired rhetoric does for their cause.  Keep in mind, this is ...

Texas Governor Pans Drilling Safety Regulations, Suggests 'God' To Blame For May 04, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterMonday, May 3rd, 2010 -- 8:34 pm If the very Christian, very Republican governor of Texas is right on this one, he may soon find it politically expedient to rethink his allegiances, what with 2010 being an election year and all. That's right: according to Republican Rick Perry, no amount of safety requirements can prevent an "act of God," which may or may not have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in 11 dead oil rig workers and a gusher of oil jetting over 2 m ...
