Rahm Emanuel tries to subvert the constitution again

Posted: Jan 29, 2013

This is nothing more than pure threats against banks and investment brokers. What he is doing is ILLEGAL! He is not ASKING, he is TELLING them and/or THREATENING them. See Article 1, Sec. 9, para. 5 and 6, of the Constitution as stated:

No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State.

No Preference shall be given by any Regulation of Commerce or Revenue to the Ports of one State over those of another; nor shall Vessels bound to, or from, one State, be obliged to enter, clear, or pay Duties in another.

To all you who voted for Obama, do see what’s on the agenda for the next 4 years? Rahm used to be Obama’s right hand man and he always felt that he should be able to do whatever he wanted.  That’s one of the reasons he left D.C.  He feels that the power of government is behind him, but he’s wrong.

NOTE:  Of the 513 killings in Chicago last year, not one was caused by an assault weapon. Not one! Already this year, there have been 30 murders!

Emanuel To Banks: Stop Supporting Gun Makers

January 25, 2013 9:28 AM

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is putting more pressure on gun makers to get behind his push for an assault weapons ban and criminal background checks for gun purchasers.

This time, he wants to go after their bottom line.

Emanuel is pushing two major financial institutions to stop their financial backing of gun makers, unless those companies support “commonsense reforms, including requiring criminal background checks on all gun sales.”

The mayor is urging that banks to stop lines of credit, financing for acquisitions and expansions and financial advising.

In a letter sent Friday to the CEOs of Bank Of America and TD Bank, Emanuel said: “In the past, the gun industry has stood in opposition to these safety measures. They opposed a ban on assault weapons on America’s streets, opposed a ban on military-style clips, opposed a criminal background check on all gun purchases and opposed any effort to crack down on criminal gun traffickers.”

In the letter, Emanuel says TD Bank offers a $60 million line of credit to Smith & Wesson, which produces the AR-15. That is the weapon used by James Holmes in the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre that killed 12 people, Emanuel wrote.

Emanuel told CEO Bharat Masrani “to use your influence to push this company to find common ground” on an assault weapons ban and gun background checks.

In a separate letter, Emanuel urged Bank Of America CEO Brian T. Moynihan to do the same thing with Sturm, Ruger & Co., which has a $25 million line of credit with the bank.

“Collectively we can send a clear and unambiguous message to the entire gun industry that investors will no longer financially support companies that support gun violence,” Emanuel wrote.

Last week, Emanuel ordered a portfolio analysis from the five pension and retirement funds for Chicago employees to determine if fund managers hold financial interests in companies that manufacture or sell assault weapons.

This week, the Chicago Municipal Employees Annuity and Benefit Fund (MEABF) board voted to divest more than $1 million from three companies that manufacture assault weapons – Freedom Group, Smith and Wesson and Sturm Ruger.

Truthhurts, how do you always end on the hard to - defend side of everything? Truth doesn't

[ In Reply To ..]
hurt THAT much. I've gotta go, so I'll just say that Bank of America can take of itself. :) Big time. Being clearly on the wrong side of the law won't bother it, but bad press might influence it somewhat. Temporarily.

That's not the idea. Of course, BoA can take care of itself - Truthhurts

The problem is RAHM EMANUEL IS TRYING TO SUBVERT THE CONSTITUTION AGAIN. What he wants to do is AGAINST our constitution. Don't you get it? (Never mind-I know your answer to that already).

You are still blind to what Rahm and the rest of Obama's support base are trying to do to this country. You can't keep watching those in power shred the Constitution and not care.....or can you? WAKE UP!

Little by little, the government is taking away our rights and some of you don't notice or don't want to notice and don't care. Some day soon (I predict in 4 years if not stopped soon) you will wake up and wonder how we got to be a bankrupt, powerless nation controlled by a few in power and your Bill of Rights will be no more.

We have a Supreme Court because what is and isn't - constitutional isn't set in concrete. nm

Anyway, all he did was send them a letter asking them - not to lend money for guns. That
[ In Reply To ..]
may be seen/seems to be seen as a threat by the gun industry, but he'd have as much chance of "pressuring" the Empire State Building into moving across the street with a piece of paper as forcing the B of A to comply.
It's tyranny!!! - What's next?

a CERTIFIED LETTER?? It's a slippery slope!

How is BoA on the wrong - side of the law?

More like Rahm will be on the wrong side of the law - tortious interference with business.

Yes BoA is a fine upstanding citizen! - I heart BoA!

Sending them cyberhugs to help get over Rahm's letter.

So how did you feel about the Patriot Act? - just wondering

That's okay because it was started under Bush. - no msg

IMHO... - ZvilleMT

[ In Reply To ..]
It's unconstitutional. Better questions would be why didn't anyone try to sue over this (maybe they did?) and why did Obama continue it and expand upon it when he was clearly not in favor of it when he ran the first time?

I agree with Zville. Problem is Obama took it much, - Truthhurts

much further than Bush. NDAA anyone? All obama's doing.

Thank you for the link. The comments section is hilarious! - tee hee

Lemme get this straight... all he did was write a letter?

Must you ridicule posters? - NM

tiresome - indeed

Here are some excerpts from OP's post ridiculing someone who responded to her:

"Don't you get it? (Never mind-I know your answer to that already)."

"You are still blind..."

and one of my personal favorites:

"WAKE UP!"

These are personal attacks, ridiculing a poster, not a response to the article as tee hee's was.

Thank you. I've been called a lot of things in my life... - tee hee

that is not subversion of the constitution - tvc15

The article you cite from the constitution has to do with taxes and duties, and does not apply to Emanuel's actions here. It's good to read the constitution, but more important to understand it.

Posting pieces of the constitution is meaningful only when the excerpt is germane to the subject.

Honestly, I don't particularly - Fanatical Hypocrite

like the precedent this would be setting. I'm no fan of assault rifles and think it's ridiculous that any gun maker would be against background checks. That would be like tobacco companies complaining about putting warning labels on their products;)

However, despite supporting these things, I don't like the idea of them clamping down on any still legal industry's funding. Sure, the market does that every day. Companies like Microsoft, AT&T, M*Modal, Wal-mart, etc. spend huge amounts of money to starve potential competitors and rig the markets. That doesn't necessarily mean the government should get into that habit too.

On the other hand, I don't see it as being unconstitutional either. The constitution has almost no appropriate financial regulations because the modern corporate structure didn't exist in the same way the Second Amendment was never particularly designed to protect assault rifles (not saying it shouldn't necessarily, just saying the Founding Fathers didn't know the terrifying future their great grandchildren would have wrought). I'm not a constitutional scholar, but the article you mention, unless someone more educated on the subject can correct me, was about supporting one state above another. Like if I became president and I levied a tax against Alabama because I have a beef with that state. It doesn't seem to protect specific products so much as sites of manufacture.

Finally, and this is the big one, none of what I just said actually matters because it's not happening. Rahm is sending out letters asking people to do stuff. While I haven't seen the letters and maybe they end with "If you don't, me and Obama will come to your house and bust you up," but I doubt it. Still, shame on Rahm, cutting down trees to make letters that will end up in the trash as soon as they're received. Seriously, appealing to BoA's humanity? That's a punchline to a 12 year joke.

Now, in direct violation to the constitution, I'm going to write a strongly worded letter to BoA to either put pressure on McDonald's to make the Shamrock shake a year round menu item or I'm going to cancel my credit card.

I'll sign that - letter!!!

[ In Reply To ..]
I LOVE the Shamrock shake - year round would be fantastic!!

St. Patrick's Day my favorite holiday for as long as I can remember. Then Halloween. I may be too old to Trick or Treat any longer, but you're never too old to buy a couple bags of candy, hang up a sign that says you're sick to scare off the kids, turn off the lights, have a horror movie marathon and eat candy until you slip into a diabetic coma. Well, maybe I'm too old for that too, but it doesn't stop me!
I'm with you on the - candy...

but I can't watch horror movies. The last horror movie I watched was Hostel and I had nightmares for weeks! And I think you're never too old for holidays - or candy!! :)

OBAMA'S DAILY VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTIONApr 21, 2014

When Republicans challenged Obamacare in the courts, they had to overcome the hurdle of persuading the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a program enacted by Congress and signed by a president.
