Talking points

Posted: Jul 9, 2017

The original thread is so far down the board I am going to start a new one.

I find it amusing that the right-wingers keep saying liberals are just regurgitating progressive talking points as opposed to conservatives who post only original thoughts.  We are all influenced by things we have seen and read and no one here is original.

As for the coal industry, I am very sorry for the coal workers; they have been abused by the owners for a very long time but the sad fact is that there is no such thing as clean coal and the world is moving towards cleaner energy.  Being allowed to pour coal mine waste into the streams is not going to help the miners; it just means the owners will be spending less money in clean-up and that money will go in their pockets.

Regarding food-borne illnesses - if you and your family did not get sick, you were very lucky because 48 million people in this country are sickened every year and having fewer inspectors and fewer inspections and allowing the industry to do what is best for their pockets is only going to make things worse.

I agree that coal - is not coming back

and better monitoring of our food is paramount. From what I have read here and there though, some of the regulations that have been rolled back were redundant, out of date, and/or cost prohibitive; not to say that most of it was just a show to get rid of anything Obama. I don't think you will be successful changing people's minds about Trump though. People wanted a change and were angry at the system - with good reason - and saw him as being the hope for change. Sometimes people need to learn the hard way - I have a teenage son who has always been like that, from learning to walk to riding a bike - and maybe rather than arguing all day, sometimes it is better to just let it be! Just my opinion, but I have been watching you guys go back and forth and don't see much of a resolution possible!

Trump's energy plan will make America the new Saudi Arabia - Opinion Piece

[ In Reply To ..]
Makes sense to me.

I posted this rather than Trump's actual energy plan because I thought it would be easier for some to understand.

Reality is, today's radicals just relabel liberal ideals and goals. - Yes, but. :)

[ In Reply To ..]
The 2016 "movement" promoted no original ideas, just traditional liberal ones. That has always been typical of the radical left, whose leaders virtually always waste their passions in trying to take down Democratic Party progressives instead of uniting to achieve progressive goals over the trampled bodies of knuckledragging hard conservatives.

Oh, well. Better when they waste their energies on in-fighting the more mainstream left, because democracies are in serious trouble when some hard right leader draws them into further extremism to unite against mainstream liberals and moderate conservatives.

Btw, totally agree about coal and infectious disease. How can any sensible person not?

Here's your chance to convince me on food safety - Honest question sm

What Obama-era rule or law relating to food-borne illness did Trump overturn?

I'm asking you because I'm not finding that in a Google search. Here is an article that I found about Obama-era rules overturned which doesn't mention food-borne illness.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/05/01/us/politics/trump-obama-regulations-reversed.html?mcubz=2

The 1 Health item overturned had to do with federal family-planning funds.

I also ran a search for "obama regulations food-borne illness" and I'm finding things he passed.

https://www.google.com/search?q=obama+regulations+food-borne+illness

I'm not seeing any news that these rules or the Food Safety Modernization Act (signed by Obama in 2011) was repealed.

A similar search for "trump regulations food-borne illness" turns up articles talking about Trump delaying meetings and campaign rhetoric about the food safety act. I'm seeing lots of "implications" and "potential" and "mixed messages." But no one seems to be saying that he's actually done anything to overturn the FSMA.

https://www.google.com/search?q=trump+regulations+food-borne+illness

Please back up your claim regarding Trump making food less safe by overturning Obama's regulations. I did my own research. I posted links to what I found. Now I'd really like to see what you found that makes you claim otherwise. Thank you.

A little research revealed this. sm - VTMT

The Trump campaign pitched rolling back food safety regulations in a fact sheet, arguing they are burdensome to farmers and “overkill.” But the campaign later deleted the proposal from its website and offered no explanation.

Meanwhile Trump's budget includes cutting food safety oversight.

Then OABO is way off-base as you've clearly shown - Thank you- sm

OABO said, "This administration is rescinding regulations on clean air, clean water, food safety, etc."

She said that right here: http://general.mtstars.com/471672.html

Your article clearly states that Trump's admin proposed cutting the food safety budget for the FDA to $1.3 billion, an $83 million reduction. It's a 6.38% cut.

If that budget is approved and enacted, that's still not the same as "rescinding regulations on food safety."

Even if enacted it doesn't mean it would have an adverse effect on food safety or the regulators. It could cut out useless layers of upper management, for example.

This is the same principle when we say Nuance and M*Modal should get rid of their recruiters, tech support, managers, and QA staff and give all that extra money to us, the people doing the actual work. Why wouldn't that same philosophy apply to government agencies? Again, assuming it's approved and enacted, which it hasn't been.

Thank you for the link. That article was a lot more fair than others I saw on this topic.

Mining for lithium isn't clean either - vin

[ In Reply To ..]
The production of renewable energy sources also results in pollution. All of the above is the best policy moving forward; well, only those which make economic sense. Coal is obviously not long for this world with coal mining being a more costly endeavor than natural gas extraction. Even wholesale wind is becoming less costly per kWh in some locales. Meanwhile, let's move forward with the all of the above approach where it makes financial sense.

Not Just Talking PointsJul 08, 2017
Every time a progressive on this board mentions what this disgusting administration is doing the right-wingers label everything liberal talking points.  There is no doubt that Trump et al are trying their best to remove as many regulations as possible that protect our food and the environment.  Scott Pruitt recently tried to loosen methane regulations and thankfully the courts told him he did not have the authority to do it.  They have already loosened food inspections which were ...

Talking Points CommentaryAug 04, 2014
Everyone should listen to Bill O'Reilly's talking points memo from today, August 4, 2014. You may not agree with him, but everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, should listen to this commentary. I am not telling you to watch, nor do I need anyone to fill this board with comments on Bill O. That's not the point of this message, so if you can't stand him, that's fine. Just don't g ...

Last Update: June 12, 2014 575 US troops died in Afghanistan during the Bush presidency. By August 18, 2010, following two troop surges initiated by President Obama, that number had doubled. Today, over 1500 US troops have died in Afghanistan since President Obama took office—and yet, little in that war-torn country has changed. These numbers should give us pause. While the Administration has publicly conceded that there is no military solution in Afghanistan, and claimed that it support ...
