immigration reform.  So I just wanted to throw this out there.

First of all....I am NOT for amnesty.  I do believe that we should secure our border, fine those employers who hire illegals, etc.

However, to those who have come to our country legally...we should really do something in regards to them.  How many people have come here legally and cannot be visited by their family because they cannot obtain visas?

Why does it take so long for people currently applying to come here legally?  Surely we can do something to encourage more people to come here legally rather than illegally.

Just some things to think about.

A friend of mine went to China to teach English and while there she met a man and they got married.  It took them 9 months for her husband to get a visa so she could come back to the states with her husband.  Now...that is ridiculous that it took that long to do..especially for someone who is married to an American citizen.

The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Period. Lost paperwork doesn't help.

When I had my notary services, an Indian (from India) came to me to notarize papers - not once, but 3 times because the INS (or whoever does that work-I can't remember anymore) lost their paperwork.

I agree with those wanting to come legally. Get them through. Do the paperwork and while that's being done, the background investigation can be done, too.

I'm going to look and see what's all involved in it. It's been over 10 years since I checked into it.

To become a naturalized citizen, the following applies - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
1. You must apply to be a legal resident here (Permanent Resident Card formerly known as Green Card) and must stay for 5 years, or 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.
2. You must file an application which costs $595+$80 for finger printing.
3. In the meantime, you must learn English - must speak, read, and write basic English.
4. Learn U.S. Hsitory and how the goverment works (civics classes), learn the rights and responsibilities a U.S. citizen has.
5. If you work, you must pay income, state and local taxes.
6. If a male between 18 and 54, you must sign up for the Selective Service.
7. Must let USCIS know if you move and keep them updated on any place you live.
8. Must have continous residency. If you leave the country for more than 6 months, you may be breaking your continuous residence but if you leave for 12 months, you definitely break your continuous residence requirement and must start the process all over.
9. Must not take too many trips outside the U.S., even short trips. You must be inside the U.S. for 30 months in the 5 years before applying for citizenship or 18 months if married.
10. You must have good character. No-No's are being drunk, prostitution, or lying for examples.

You can never become a citizen if you ever committed the following crimes: murder, rape, sexual abuse of a child, violent assault, trafficking in drugfs, firearms, or people, and aggravated felonies.

There are 8 pages to the application process (leave it to the government to make it easy. Did the IRS make up these forms? LOL).
The Guide to Naturalization is 58 pages long.

They do make it easy for the naturalization test because they put all the questions on line. The civics test is an oral test and the USCIS Officer will ask the applicant up to 10 of the 100 civics questions. An applicant must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly to pass the civics portion of the naturalization test.

Here's a rub: If the USCIS denies the application, you can reapply but must pay the fee again.

Wow...that is a bit ridiculous. - sm

I wonder how many have been denied just to get the fee again? I like how they must learn our history, learn English, etc. That is good. I bet some of these legal immigrants know our history better than we do. LOL.

My great grandfather came from Hungary to the US. He could speak 5 different languages....except English. My great grandmother wouldn't let him speak anything but English once they got married. She told him if he was going to live here, he needed to speak English.

This Is What I Have Been Talking AboutAug 12, 2015
Regardless of the details of Michael Browns actions, none of which deserved the death penalty, by the way, his death made people open their eyes to the racism in this country. It opened the eyes of the government on local, state, and federal levels. It became impossible to ignore anymore. Changes are slowly being made. Today, on the 1 year anniversary of his death, peaceful protests are being held across the country. This is my way of participating in those peaceful protests. If you'd like t ...

Not Just Talking PointsJul 08, 2017
Every time a progressive on this board mentions what this disgusting administration is doing the right-wingers label everything liberal talking points.  There is no doubt that Trump et al are trying their best to remove as many regulations as possible that protect our food and the environment.  Scott Pruitt recently tried to loosen methane regulations and thankfully the courts told him he did not have the authority to do it.  They have already loosened food inspections which were ...

Talking PointsJul 09, 2017
The original thread is so far down the board I am going to start a new one.   I find it amusing that the right-wingers keep saying liberals are just regurgitating progressive talking points as opposed to conservatives who post only original thoughts.  We are all influenced by things we have seen and read and no one here is original. As for the coal industry, I am very sorry for the coal workers; they have been abused by the owners for a very long time but the sad fact is that there i ...

Talking About Hoarders And Their Debris BelowJan 02, 2010
My older daughter lives in a part of town where there are a lot of people who may have come across the border to live in the US. She told me yesterday the county should charge garbage pickup service charges on your property tax (she said if they pay taxes). She tells me where she lives the people (not her, she pays for her sanitation charges) throw garbage out in the street so naturally it eventually has to be picked up by the sanitation department. We are talking about a fast rising c ...

Everyone should listen to Bill O'Reilly's talking points memo from today, August 4, 2014. You may not agree with him, but everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, should listen to this commentary. A Talking Points Memo From Bill OApr 14, 2011
This station was on when I turned on the TV this morning and his Talking Points Memo made sense and had some good points. It was about how to lower our debt. Watch if you have an open mind and give your comments whether or not you come to the same conclusion.  This is just a suggestion. I am not telling you to watch, nor do I need anyone to fill this board with comments on Bill O. That's not the point of this message, so if you can't stand him, that's fine. Just don't g ...

Excellent Summary -reasons Done Talking To Feb 11, 2015
1. You support revisionist history. When I was in a high school history class, I’ll never forget one thing our teacher taught us: what you read in history books isn’t always accurate. The example she used was history books in the Soviet Union, now known as Russia. She informed us, to my shock and horror, that the Soviets pretty much included what they liked in the history books and left out everything else. As a result, she said, there were generations of Russian students who were m ...

Talking About Kayne Below, Lets Talk KimFeb 13, 2015
I had on Entertainment Tonight just a little while ago. Kim took her daughter, her baby, to a fashion show and the baby started to fuss and cry. She is a baby. I cannot believe for the life of me about the mother taking a young baby to an event like this, I only saw grown women. She might think her baby is all that but I guarantee you no one else wants to sit around a wailing kid trying to watch something like the fashion parade. I cannot believe how utterly ridiculous this looks. ...

More Truth, Not Lib Spin Or Talking Points.Mar 25, 2015
Last Update: June 12, 2014 575 US troops died in Afghanistan during the Bush presidency. By August 18, 2010, following two troop surges initiated by President Obama, that number had doubled. Today, over 1500 US troops have died in Afghanistan since President Obama took office—and yet, little in that war-torn country has changed. These numbers should give us pause. While the Administration has publicly conceded that there is no military solution in Afghanistan, and claimed that it support ...
