Bug-infested food! - sm

If they have to eat bugs, too, at least let them vie for $1 million like on "Survivor."

plan the menus, hire the cooks, order, cook and serve the meals. She simply vocally supports better nutrition for our children, just like she vocally supports better treatment for our veteran and their families. The onus rests on each individual school system to follow the nutritional guidelines, allocate additional funds, and hire staff that does more than just open a can or defrost some mystery meat. Get involved in your community and have a voice if you don't like the food your school is serving. Either that or pack a lunch for your kids and stop expecting the government to feed your children. My grandsons take their lunch most days but like a lot of the school menu items and will buy lunch one or two days a week. Our cafeteria workers actually cook good food. Our school district adds a considerable amount of money to the lunch program to supplement what they receive from the government. Herein lies the difference.

Question about the lunches - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
I have heard that cafeteria workers go through these home packed lunches and will confiscate or deny the student being able to eat the lunch or parts of it.

Is this true?

Not where I live. - sm

No way, no how would anybody in my school district confiscate a child's lunch that was sent from home. There is no federal law that mandates this practice, and anyone doing that would certainly be taking it upon themselves to stick their nose in where it doesn't belong.

Sounds like conservative Michelle Malkin-type overhyped propaganda to me. Conservatives in my school district are quite proactive when they are seeking to limit/ban the consumption of what they consider to be junk literature and junk music, but they seem to want an anything goes policy regarding consumption of junk foods.

But that's just my school district, of course.

More right wing propaganda. - nm

Our school board talked about this - but so far a no go

Nobody liked it--invasion of privacy, invasion of parental control.

Summer Will Soon Be Here, Lunches? Apr 15, 2013
Need some ideas about the kids for this summer. I work the 2nd shift so after breakfast need something that will be easy for me to "throw" together and not spend time on. These kids are young, 1 going into middle school, but they will eat most things, not picky. I would like to have something fixed before I start my midday work day. ...

Need Ideas For Packing Lunches For My Daughter.Sep 20, 2015
My daughter just started high school this year and has decided that she does not want to eat school lunches anymore.  She claims they make her stomach hurt.  She can't give a specific food that causes her stomach problems just all school lunches do.  So fine, I don't mind packing her a lunch everyday.  I'm not a big fan of the school lunches anyway.  My daughter gets free lunches at school because we qualify as I'm a single mom, so I thought we should ...

Anyone Else Having A Healthy Thanksgiving?Nov 24, 2014
All these recipes sound great - but I can't eat them. I have to (want to) get my weight down - haven't baked anything since July, food diary, all that jazz. So now the holidays are rolling around - I went and got a small turkey, brussel sprouts (I love brussel sprouts), one sweet potato, an avocado, celery, I already have kale in the house. Also nonfat yogurt (yes, I took the plunge from lowfat to nonfat yogurt and skim milk from 2%). Organic "only peanuts" peanut butter. Oliv ...

So rev-up your shopping cart. Apples - One a day keeps the cheapskate away. Asparagus - HUGE store special at 99 cents a pound during Easter week. I bought 10 pounds, blanched it, and then froze it. Bananas - Potassium for pennies. Barley - A tasty alternative to rice and potatoes. Beans - Canned or ...

Is This A Punishment Or A Healthy Thing?May 01, 2012
I have 3 grown kids in their 30s and one is 40. Two of them can't seem to remember my birthday, Christmas or Mother's Day. Once in a while they may call late in the day, or text at 10:40 p.m. on my birthday, but often nothing is acknowledged or done. There have been occasions where I get a card and once or twice a gift, but not usually. One child does routinely send a card but never a gift. They are all professionals and fairly well off. So there I am on all their birthdays and a ...

Building On The Healthy Thanksgiving Post Below Nov 24, 2014
I had something relatively decadent.  boneless skinless chicken cooked on the stovetop with butter, garlic, salt, pepper and dried onion.  BUT instead of fries or chips with the sandwich or allowing myself a sweet treat later i'm eating edemame with my sandwich.  It is time consuming and keeps my mind and hands busy, taking me longer to eat and therefore eating less, hopefully.  I think I will start substituting edemame for fries or chips with all of my snacks from now o ...
