Several Prosecutors Probing Health Care Deal

Posted: Dec 23, 2009

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The top prosecutors in seven states are probing the constitutionality of a political deal that cut a funding break for Nebraska in order to pass a federal health care reform bill, South Carolina's attorney general said Tuesday.

Attorney General Henry McMaster said he and his counterparts in Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, North Dakota, Texas and Washington state — all Republicans — are jointly taking a look at the deal they've dubbed the "Nebraska compromise."

"The Nebraska compromise, which permanently exempts Nebraska from paying Medicaid costs that Texas and all other 49 states must pay, may violate the United States Constitution — as well as other provisions of federal law," Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said.

Plenty more being said. See link.

I'd like to see that bit of special attention for Nelson nullified in this way: the same deal for every state.

Otherwise, it would remain a dirty deal that just ticks off the other 49 states.

They opened another can of worms by doing this.

It seems like the harder they try, the worse their ideas. I think they all need a little dose of reality. Chicago politics may work in Chicago but it should not work across the country.

I spent that last few days looking at old newspapers from 1936-1945. Seems things haven't changed that much since then, just dollar amounts. I would love to post some of those articles, but it's a paid site and you can't copy and paste.

You didn't mention Obama by name, but the implication is there by your reference to "Chicago politics".

Inference and implication are tools well-worn by the Bush administration. If you don't want us to remember them, stop reminding us of them.

Then stop trying to distract from the fact that Obama - IS A CHICAGO POLITICIAN
[ In Reply To ..]
You are hilarious and so typical. Whenever someone has a real point, it's easier to act like.. "oh, but Bush was awful or worse" than to just admit something current. Guess you like to live in the past, and with the way things are continuing to go downhill, I would not blame you.
That's general terminology used by a lot of people, - Backwards Typist

including the news media. It doesn't necessarily mean O. Corruption in Chicago politics is well known, more so than the rest of the country, although there are a few other places that are right up there with Chicago. Laughing

Would you still be using "Chicago politics" if Obama weren't from Chicago? Obviously not. Therefore, you link Obama in the original post albeit by inference.

Otherwise, you'd be talking about things past and we all know anything before January 2009 doesn't count for the right wingers.

I don't know why you would insinuate that I wouldn't. Just a couple weeks ago, you agreed with me on a few things. Now you think I'm one-sided again.

Fer us or agin us! - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
BT, you say we agreed on some things a couple of weeks ago and now you say I think you're one-sided.

What I said, just to be perfectly clear, is that you use insinuation (Iran, 9/11) and try to smear (Iran, WMD, 9/11) without actually having the guts (Iran, 9/11!) to come out and take responsibility (IRAN, 9/11) for your words. It's been done that way by the republicans for a decade now, and it's easily seen through.

It is silly to try to insist you would be talking about Chicago politics if Obama weren't from Chicago. Paper thin protestations. You can claim that all you want, but you are about as transparent as a pane of glass.

I don't buy it.

Now, for a very important point. We can agree and we can disagree, depending on the issue, and that does not mean that I have to swallow hogwash from you on any particular matter. This "fer us or agin us" attitude went out with Bush.

Now, feel free to parrot about hogwash and insinuation and whatever else you need to borrow.

And happy holidays ^^

But it was heartfelt - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
People should be able to say hogwash! when they hear or see it. BT certainly does in his/her own way. We all do. It was not used sarcastically nor is it anything but a mild term, especially when compared to some of the language on this board.

The wish for happy holidays was not sarcastic either. That's the point and I guess you missed it. We can disagree and we can agree, and in the end we can be civil. It's the holiday season and I hope everyone has a happy one, even those with whom I mostly disagree. Thinking any other way would be petty and definitely not WJWD.

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...
