Refrigerants have been changed to environmentally friendly R-134 and food refrigeration systems use propylene glycol.
Whenever I hear Kerry or Leonardo DiCaprio talk about the environment and then see them fly around in jets with AC I just roll my eyes.

The new refrigerants that replace Freon don't cause problems with the ozone layer, but sm - sm

OTOH, if we go back to ammonia, the original refrigerant, and invest a tenth as much R&D in either improving that non-polluting technology or coming up with a new non-polluting one that we have put into CFC refrigerants over the last few decades, we may be able to have our cake and eat it, too.
In the meantime, the fact some people don't walk the way they talk doesn't change the laws of chemistry. As for myself, it's been around 95 or above here all week. I don't have AC and don't intend to get any. I live in housing built before it existed, and I'm doing fine without it, as I always have.
OTOH, if you are in this heat wave inside an airplane as they are currently designed or a standard high-rise block building as currently designed, you don't have much choice but to run air-conditioning or suffer heat stroke. That doesn't keep you from recognizing that AC as currently designed is a big problem, just from getting rid of it in your life this second.
