Request research help

Posted: Jan 29, 2010

I've tried to search online for the percentage of Americans receiving SS disability, the reasons for disability, etc.  Does anyone have a good site for this?  I'm also interested in children under the age of 18 receiving supplemental income payments for "disability".

I ask in part because I am of the firm belief that a great many of us are working while other abled persons drawing these type payments are not.  I also quite frankly do not understand how a child, who is not expected to contribute to family income, is able to draw dollars for a "disability" before he/she is even of working age.

I just think this is one of the places taxes are killing us.

Thanks for any help.

one of probably millions that can share a story on that. My BIL and SIL are meth addicts (will not go down that terrible road) but he ended up blowing himself up in a meth lab and receiving burns over 60% of his body. He lay in a burn unit for a couple of months, was finally released from the hospital, went to court, ended up doing community service for this (ridiculous) and in the process applied for and received SSD. He now receives around $2800 a month to make more meth. And before anyone assumes that since he had such bad burns over a large portion of his body, this does not keep him from hunting (he is a convicted felon and is not supposed to have a gun) and fishing. He carries these heavy tree stands into the woods, the gun and climbs a tree. That is some kind of disability for $2800 a month.

Good luck with your research!!

From Cornell U, this might give you further - info on the subject

I hope this site can help you. It has several links. On stats, etc.

From a personal view, have ran into quite a few receiving these benefits with some pretty outrageous excuses for needing them. What a crock.

Anyway good luck.

Thanks, will try that when I get time. - sigh

It has always amazed me how many folks are disabled, yet continue to make money "on the side". I know one lady who is on disability for migraines but babysits five days per week. I don't get it.

Not only are they drawing monies but are also on Medicare which means even bigger bucks coming out of our taxes.

Please don't take me wrong here. I realize some folks honestly need this and are honestly disabled, but it seems to me that the biggest majority are not.

Where does it state "disabled" children?

As far as Anon's post, she had a perfectly good example of SSI being taken advantage of.
Sigh vs Oakey vs anon - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Original post refers to children receiving SSI "disbility" payments. The quotes are placed twice because Sigh is skeptical whether or not the child is truly disabled.

Oakey's perspective is that these children ARE legitimately disabled. Hence the implicit meaning for her is disabled children. Anon argues this point by splitting hairs and mincing words because she sides with and supports the presumption that the SSI claim is bogus, adding nothing of substance to the dialog except confusing the issue at hand.

Sigh...to answer your question, children with disabilities receive SSI benefits not because they are expected to produce household income in realtime or in the future. They get them because the disability generates tremendous expense. Benefits subsidize those expenses in terms of medical care and caregivers so the working members are able to continue gainful employment to keep the roof overhead and the fridge stocked with food. This is similar to veteran's benefits given to college age children of veterans who otherwise might not be able to foot educational expenses.

Sigh...if you are interested in research that has any integrity at all, you should not be skewing the results by taking a one-sided approach. You will end up proving absolutely nothing if you do not balance your findings by investigating the entire set of data. Valid conclusions will not be drawn if they are taken out of context and blown out of proportion to prove a foregone conclusion by ignoring the overall picture. Waste of time.

Regardless of what you may think, - sigh

this IS taken advantage of and on a very large basis. I see it with my own eyes and hear it with my own ears.

So, I'll research what I like and you do the same. Okie?
Very large basis. Another foregone conclusion out of context. - How would you know if

you don't put it into the perspective of fraud vs legitimate claims? Besides, what's your solution? Deny all claims because there is fraud? You need percentages (not dollar amounts) to make your case.

Otherwise, may as well not waste your time. Just go to the most radical fear-mongering right-wing website you can find to confirm your worst suspicions and lift their faulty data. Or you could ask yourself which you care about more...being right or getting it right?
thank you - cj

for the voice of reason. another reason children receive SSI is upon the death of a parent. My SIL was killed by a drunk driver and left behind three children, ages 4 yrs, 3 yrs, and 18 months. They receive SSI until they reach age 18 -it offsets child care expenses and the general expense of childrearing. their mom was a CPA, and the loss of income was significant.
CJ, that makes perfect sense. - sigh

The children lost a parent and certainly should receive this assistance. That is entirely right, in my own little mind here.

What I do not understand is a child in second grade receiving this because he has ADD. That doesn't make sense to me. It's not for child care as the mother does not work. It's not for medical as the child is on Medicaid. It doesn't make sense to me.

ADD and ADHD learning disability. Not that easy to get. - criteria link...

I'm amazed at the responses to this simple request. I, personally, want to look at this for my own knowledge, not to present a case to anyone, including anyone here. I have obviously not made any conclusions or arguments as I have not even really started any research as yet. I've been working all day.

I do know for fact that there is abuse and I would just like to see how much, if anyone knows. I also want to understand the child disability thing for my own knowledge.

Some of these responses are totally ridiculous. Why in the world would anyone here care how I choose to spend my time, whether I waste it or not, or even what I think about this?

Again, I've not made any kind of statement here. This is something that interests me and all I did was ask for help in researching a subject.

Thanks for the help, the one response that was of help. I truly appreciate it. For those that expressed genuine interest, I appreciate that, too.

Have a nice weekend.

Is it possible for women to please sit down on the toilet seat in a public restroom??? I am quite sick and tired of sitting down on a wet seat because some woman decided it's "sanitary" to squat and pee instead of sitting and peeing. Now I have to wipe my buttocks because they are soaking wet, besides wiping myself. To boot, I have now also walked where someone else's pee has squirted (and so have you, HELLO!) Sorry if I sound repetetive, but if we ALL just sat on the dang seat, th ...

A Question Heard On The Radio RE: A Child's Gift RequestDec 09, 2011
The radio station I listen to has a weekly "therapy" session where someone writes in with a problem. Of course, the most expensive model. Parents told Son they could not afford that, so he returned a blank sheet of paper to them and said if they did not get him that, he wanted nothing. Father thinks they should gr ...

I've Been Doing Some Research On Oil.Jul 16, 2010
A lot of debate has been going on in regards to drilling for oil especially in light of the tragic oil spill in the Gulf.  Many people do not want to drill in our own country and I understand that.  There are risks involved.  However, technology has decreased the risks and I believe that if big oil companies had followed regulations and let inspections occur when they should have, that this recent disaster could have been avoided.  In saying that, I'm all for looking int ...

This Is MY Research May 30, 2012
Many conservatives argue that our economy can flourish only when the federal government gets out of the private sector’s way. Many progressives counter that in our free market system, there are times when the government needs to step in to protect the common good and ensure there is broad-based economic growth. This debate defines our politics today. Americans of all political persuasions, however, should agree that quick and decisive government action was necessary between 2008 and ...
