One Hour News Conference Opposing Gun Control

Please watch if you have time. Most of the speakers give a personal family history. It's very interesting.

Star Parker, founder and president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), and other leaders from the black community held a news conference on gun control.

Speakers oppose the gun control laws that are currently being proposed and argue that there is no evidence that the policies will prevent other tragedies.

They included: Ken Hutcherson, former linebacker for the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys and pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Washington; Harry Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Deborah Honeycutt, medical director of Clayton State University Health Clinic; William Owens Jr., founder of God, Guns, and the Constitution; Bruce Rivers, pastor and father of a child murdered by gang members; and Kenn Blanchard, pastor, activist and speaker.

people speaking out against gun control. No argument is won until all sides are represented; no democracy is complete until everyone is heard. I don't have the time to watch the video, I might get the chance later though. So I also won't argue the validity of their statements as I'm ignorant to them.

Instead, I hope you don't mind, I'm concentrating on the inclusion of William Owens Jr. and his Gods, Guns and the Constitution within this group. Having become familiar with this organization and its leader recently it's honestly hard for me to express my horror that any other group would admit them. If CURE wishes themselves to be taken seriously, aligning themselves with Owens is the wrong way to do it.

While I'm now agnostic and therefore make no claim to know what mysteries the universe might hold, I grew up in a mixed Catholic, Protestant and Jewish family. My father was an atheist who studied theology in college. My mom was miscellaneous spiritual. I saw many different types of religion as a child. Differing interpretations of the Bible and I've always had a keen interest in the Bible. The Abrahamic faiths have been influencing the planet for millenia. They themselves are based on still older religions. It is a legacy passed down through a long lineage. So while I'm not Christian, I hate to see any ancient religion so terribly perverted as Mr. Owens has done.

To juxtapose God and guns in the first place I feel is a disservice to any God. Specifically doing this with Jesus Christ, however, is especially wrong. Taking a message of peace and universal brotherhood and saying that Jesus would approve of guns. I'm not saying that Christians have to be against guns. I personally find nothing wrong with self-defense, but there's certain names I don't shove together with guns. Jesus, Gandhi, MLK, etc. are names and ideals that I find incompatible with any tool of violence.

Gods, Guns and the Constitution tries to attribute faith to killing implements. Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I hope for all our sake that if there is a God, that He would never want us to associate his name with any killing, even if it were necessary for others to live. People do what has to be done sometimes to live, but once you make that event holy, we become no better than the savage religions of ancient cultures that sacrificed to satiate some cruel deity's desire for blood.

Mr. Owens preaches hate against Americans. While I understand that his personal religious beliefs are intolerant to many lifestyles, religions and cultures, and I believe a person has the right to hate whoever they want, his calls for the destruction of their ways of life are evil. There's plenty of people I disagree with in this country, but it's not my right to oppress or harm them. The mere suggestion of that would betray every principle of this nation.
