The "Discussion on Successful Communication With Minorities and Women" convened in the Burwell Plantation room, named for the powerful slave-owning/slave-trading Burwell Family. On questioning by media on their outreach efforts to minority candidates, Rep Greg Walden was able to name one Hispanic woman by name who had been invited to co-chair the event, then added that Reps Tom Cole and Marwayne Mullin, both from Oklahoma, were helping out with the "Native American effort."

When asked about the site selection, Mr. Walden became defensive, quickly pointing out that he was not in charge of those arrangements. When another reporter asked who else was on the panel besides the three white men (Reps Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Scott Rigell and Frank Wolf, both of Virginia, he replied, "a woman from CNN (Ana Navarro, whose name he did not specifically recall), and...wait for it..."SEAN DUFFY'S WIFE," a women defined not by name, but through her relationship with her husband! Ms. Herrera Beutler was also on the list but, alas, her name was misspelled.

You just can't make this stuff up.

His cabinet is still incomplete, so let's wait until it is before we judge.

I didn't find him defensive, if you're speaking of the news conference. I think he handled the question rather well.

But I think I might be a little annoyed if I was criticized for something that hasn't happened yet.

I completely agree. This is one of those bizarre accusations that's getting thrown around lately because Obama hasn't created enough real controversies.

While it's difficult to quantify, two other things strike me as contributing factors:
1. The confirmation process tends to whittle out anyone the Republicans don't like, e.g. Susan Rice. I imagine that many candidates aren't even seriously looked at for that reason.
2. The system, Obama presidency or not, is still built around a white male establishment. Women and minorities at the upper echelons of our society is a new trend and I'm not sure how big the selection pool is for non-white, non-male candidates that still have the qualifications, experience, seniority and respect necessary to get through all the political hoops. Farmers who only plant corn, shouldn't complain about all the corn that comes up.

One day, hopefully, it won't matter because all the way up the ladder, everyone gets the same opportunities. Right now though, that ladder is slippery.
