Obamacare question

I don't know if this is the correct spot to post, but here's the hypothetical question: If someone loses their job (and health insurance) and becomes an IC after obamacare open enrollment closes in February, would they still be able to enroll in obamacare (say in March or April), or would the only option for health insurance be COBRA? TYIA.

(This is hyopthetical right now, but might become a reality for me if I can't turn around my financial situation. If the answer is COBRA, I would need to hasten my decision.)

Special circumstances, true job loss (layoff) is one - happened to me

At least at present in my state, you can qualify after open enrollment under special circumstances like job loss, but it has to be true job loss like outsourcing, losing accounts to EHR, etc., not because you quit, at least in my state. After being reviewed through a committee. You will receive Medicaid until you get a job and then you inform them after you receive a job and you qualify for partial-subsidy only based on income and they will check for payroll deposits.

Just a heads up, on Medicaid, you are limited as to who will see you and be prepared for different treatment sometimes, not so much by the staff but the doctor. I left a place after waiting 2 hours to see the doctor, saying nothing, but watching others behind me go first and not even being looked in the eyes by the staff.

I felt like saying "I lost my insurance 10 years go trying to compete with India and haven't had insurance or seen a doctor since then and I've paid my taxes that entire time!" but I realized it was best not to get into that and just go to another office.

Fearing being treated differently and assumptions were made, I smiled and said "hello", but hung my head in shame handing my Medicaid card to the next doctor's office staff. But they smiled at me and treated me no differently than anyone else, and the doctor I saw afterwards was very thorough and professional and treated me just as she would anyone else.

In fact, she encouraged me to go get a mammogram immediately. I said I felt guilty doing that now on taxpayer money. She said, "Excuse me but have you paid taxes for the last 10 years you weren't seeing a doctor? I'm pretty sure they government can handle a mammogram that you're overdue on with a moderate family history of the disease."

I also discovered the reason for rapidly declining eyesight and swollen/numb ankles that had plagued me for 2 years. I only weigh 125 pounds, am not as active as I used to be, but still fairly active, and I try to eat right but I still do smoke, so I was terrified to go and find out I had heart disease. Turns out I had a B12 deficiency that must've been chronic for years causing all of those symptoms that began to fade after B12 supplements. Thank God I went and found out.

I have seen the bill and she charged 28 bucks for that initial 45-minute consultation. God bless that woman :)

You need to go to your State's website, preferably call an assistant, and talk to them about your circumstances, children, etc. You may be able to find a great policy that you can afford. Many people have found policies cheaper and better than what they had.

Again, you have to put in the effort. Make sure your representative is a person with the state exchange. The health insurance companies and others are notorious for trying to misdirect people into expensive and poor coverage.

That wasn't my situation, but I do remember I was asked whether it was quit or layoff and maybe it made no difference and they were just nosy lol. (No, the state people were actually very nice).

I didn't seek unemployment, just began looking for something else, so who knows what other benefits are there for that as well. Thanks for clarifying because I may be wrong on that part and don't want others to not seek out these options because of something I said for my particular situation.

Yesterday the House GOP held their 43rd SYMBOLIC vote to repeal Obamacare. Since their swearing in as the majority House party Jan 3, 2011, as of May 15, 2013, the GOP had taken a measley 281 votes out of the 897 days that have transpired since then. Anyway, as of May 15, 2013, 43 of those votes have been to repeal Obamacare. Not sure if this one is number 44 or if I missed a few between May 15 and now. So this is what I have learned. After listening about the new health insurance, this is what I know. There are 3 levels of care/cost. They are trying to get the young people to join to keep the cost down for the older people.
