Read the article, then try again. Establishing minimum standards - are nothing new and

something the president has talked about all along. Neither are the expectations that individual plans would be required to meet those standards. What insurance companies decide to charge for individual plans not offered on the exchange is not something ACA ever claimed to address or have control over. The choice is clear for individual plan holders: Stay with the enhanced individual plans that have been brought into compliance with ACA standards that private insurance companies gouge policy holders for or shop the exchange. You can thank good ole American capitalism, anti-single-payer and anti-universal Medicare political forces for that basket of snakes.

As for the anecdotal stories in the article, one does not have to look too far for the answer as to why the Schwabs in NC and Goldwater in SC may end up with expensive policies. Both red states have opted out of Medicaid expansion and refused to set up state exchanges. Therefore, (1) their lowest income residents will remain uninsured and the cost of insuring them will fall onto taxpayers, and (2) their middle-income residents will not receive subsidies they otherwise would qualify for up to 400% of poverty level income.

Helgren, the "irate" retiree in MI, had his deductible hiked by his individual plan provider, yet he opted NOT to shop the exchanges where he undoubtedly would have gotten a better deal in terms of coverage and would also probably qualify for subsidies since MI is participating 100% in ACA. Even so, he was able to locate a "good plan with a slightly lower premium" by shopping around.

Those folks have SCOTUS and their grandstanding red-state governors and legislatures to thank for their frustrating predicaments.

Worthwhile explanation of a few very pertinent details. - Good job. nm

success? If the first, you get what you want. If the second, you get better healthcare. A win-win for you.

As for me, I'm waiting to finish up signing up on line, hoping I don't have to do it by phone.

Have a nice Tuesday.

Unworried Obama Voter
Agreed. Healthcare providers gouging customers has always been - a bloody nightmare.

ACA does not "fix" what ails them, nor does it dictate to them what they can charge for individual policies (just IMAGINE the screeching from the wingers were that the case!). Look for them to continue to hold onto the same record profits they were getting before the law was enacted, then turn your blind eye and carry on with the usual ranting and raving. Every time we hear and see this irrational crusade to repeal or sabotage ACA, voters will remember the lengths opponents were willing to go to in order to force their rejected agenda on the rest of us so, by all means, keep those shutdown reminders coming, all the way up to election eve 2014. No problem.

Yes, Obama did LIE !! Reports now coming out that - the WH knew ahead of time

[ In Reply To ..]
that millions would LOSE their plan! I am being told that a big reason my premiums are now UNaffordable to me under Obamacare is because I must pay for "maternity care". I am 58 years old! What is being done to us should be illegal ! --and now, I will have no insurance. .. unbelievable.

Oh, my goodness. Why not just apply and find - for real? Of course those trying to

[ In Reply To ..]
KEEP people from applying are not going to tell the truth. Despicable, but some people are very bad. Remember the Koch brothers-funded TV ad with an evil, scary Uncle Sam about to do an unneeded hysteroscopy on a nice blonde girl?

Please, think about it and then go take care of yourself. Remember, you can apply by phone too, by mail, and you can enter your zip code and find a place near you to apply with real people who will answer your questions.

Gee, I wonder who is telling you that? - You are free

[ In Reply To ..]
as a bird to reject policies with maternity care. Never mind that the costs of maternity and pediatric coverage employee group policies offer to those women and families who need it has ALWAYS been shared by single, male and menopausal female policy holders.

Reports about losing individual plans that are now being required to comply with minimum policy standards are purposefully deceptive since rarely do they discuss the details of compliance requirements, nor do they focus on the COMPANY'S decision to set their premiums sky-high.

Do you live in a red state that is refusing Medicaid expansion and declining to set up exchanges? If so, do you proudly support that ill-advised decision, because if you do, you are also proudly supporting the same folks who have "decided" to make your premium UNaffordable. If not, then your (unbelievable) decision not to shop the exchange may very well be the at the root of your problems.

How many people read their policies? So mental - health care is tucked in, as now required

[ In Reply To ..]
by law, and maternity and drug abuse care? The "new" group policy is then issued under another number to the same employer covering the same employees, and costs $17 more.

I'd like to suggest that to say this isn't the "same" insurance is a technicality that would be unnoticeable to virtually everyone, who just stick the new policy in front of the old one in their insurance folder for when they need it.

Except, of course, to an employee who is so devastated by the death of her husband that she can't get out of bed. Or a couple who who've wanted to have a baby for the past couple of years and now can. Or an MT whose bad back and untreated addiction to opiates are threatening to cost her her livelihood and her home.

As for when coverages might be taken away? Obamacare is just a set of rules that operates on top of the free market. It includes about 10 coverages companies must provide but have often been deleting -- like maternity care. After those insurance companies are as free as they ever were to take away or limit coverages to increase their profits. That's not Obamacare at work; it's the good old traditional capitalist way.

nm also means no message or it could be my initials.

And online articles are updated frequently. Happens all the time. Stories evolve. News isn't static. It doesn't mean there's some big NBC conspiracy to hide a story that is being reported in every news outlet including an MSNBC discussion that lasted at least a half an hour.

I like chill. It's kind of informal and not insulting. Like relax, no worries, nothing bad happened. No offense intended.

I wouldn't be a BIT surprised if that report ended up disappearing from the face of the earth sometime soon. NBC has gone on record this morning to say there has been a huge firestorm and damage control coming from the White House today after their report.
