My gun appreciation day post is gone?

Posted: Jan 8, 2013

It was "inappropriate and in bad taste, considering the deaths at Sandy Hook School."

I find that so ironic. Conservatives make it gun appreciation day, and the post is removed by the moderator for bad taste. I agree, it's bad taste. But why can't we discuss it?

;

Bad taste is in the mouth of the beholder? FWIW, to me it had that - sting of a pointed message hitting its mark and

[ In Reply To ..]
anything but disrespectful to the children who died because it spoke to the need to prevent further such deaths.

One of my messages was also deleted as insulting, maybe not so off the mark. I was disgusted because I find claims that Democrats have set up death camps and are murdering people who disagree with them tremendously, unbelievably insulting, only mitigated by wondering about the person making them.

Every bit as offensive to me is the notion that this goes on while all of us, our entire nation, sits around and lets it, maybe occasionally discussing it on the web. The more so in that I suspect most of the people pushing this dreadful, sick picture do not believe it, just see it as a particularly juicy slimeball to lob at the Obama side (clueless to how it portrays them too).

I actually saw my deleted joke--that someone might actually have the good sense to hide with a gun instead of just sitting around waiting for us to come for her--as my most respectful response to all this. :) But, I accept it, as what constitutes an outstanding insult in a discussion that is essentially one incredibly-over-the-line insult to everyone is obviously going to be very subjective.

I just had a revelation. - RC

It was the "gather up the kiddos" title, wasn't it?

I was using that in the common context of the phrase, NOT in reference to the fact that most of the victims were children. That correlation never crossed my mind. It's a common phrase used when discussing something unsavory or dangerous.

It IS my bad for not realizing how callous it sounded, and I feel bad about that now. But why not just delete the title or change it? Or ask me to change it, which I would have gladly done?

My read of "gather up the kiddos" - was something all together.

[ In Reply To ..]
IMO, there are plenty of avid gun enthusiasts who would deem a gun appreciation day a family event. My take was collect the kids and head on down to the event. I think the perception of the reference as being callous is a long, long stretch.
Thank you. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
I can't help but feel a little offended that it would even go there. I haven't made jokes of that caliber before, and I am obviously a pro-regulation poster on this board. So I was surprised when I realized what had *probably* happened (I'm still not sure).
Oh, how funny! RC's (OP's), Moderator, AllTogether, and I - all literally had completely different takes on wh

this post meant as written.

I saw it as a knife-sharp comment on children as targets for certain (1 in 10 million) gun appreciators, i.e., its message pro controls to keep guns out of their hands.

Harsh but effective delivery of a worthwhile message because it grabbed and kept my attention. Only it wasn't what RC "said." :)
Not my kind of cleverness - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
It really isn't a subject matter I would joke about.

I see now how it could be taken that way, but it took a while for me to catch up.

At any rate, all accidental apropos aside, it IS a subject matter I'd like to discuss.
It did seem startlingly...uh, raw for you, the version I - missed completely much more like. :) nm

I can see the pro-gunners now...furiously clicking the report button to rid the board (once and for all?) of my tasteless liberal humor!

DISCLAIMER: The caliber thing was not a joke. That was me using common language. Any similarity to a tasteless joke is coincidence and not endorsed by the author.

:P
agree; that was my impression, too - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I also agree that the perception of it being callous is a very, very big stretch. It's a shame this important post was deleted.

Wow. That's the whole point of posting about it. - Only the tip of the bad taste iceberg

coming our way as the gun control debate revs up. The only thing I can think of is that someone reported it to the mods. IMO, the appropriate response to that would have been to remind them of the thick-skin disclaimer that appears at the top on this board, considering that it was the cons who declared the gun-appreciation day in the first place.

I think we need a little definition here about what the bad taste criteria is going to be moving forward. It was "bad taste" for the R-CN state rep to tell Gabby Giffords to stay out of her towns. Will that be taken down too? I can think of many, many bad taste posts that have been left to stand, such as posting the picture of Ambassador Stevens corpse being dragged through the streets, yet it was not removed. Let's not EVEN start talking about how many threads devolve into scathing personal attacks against posters with opposing views.

What ever happened to keeping moderation to a minimum? Has there been a change in that policy as well?

Maybe you should email the moderator and - ask if you can do the job for a while -

[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds like you have it all figured out.

Better still, perhaps the moderator could post - bad taste criteria and

[ In Reply To ..]
an explanation of her reasoning so we all could stop speculating about what did and did not happen. It's not as though that hasn't been done before.
But this is politics. You know-2 things people should never - watch being made? Politics and sausage? :)nm

To the Moderator: Bad taste would be the post of the food stamp - Al Fabbet

[ In Reply To ..]
with the president's face on it where the discussion to follow would most likely be those blasting the obvious racism, those claiming "what racism?" and "stop playing the race card," or those getting a good giggle out of it because that's how they get their kicks. Another racist joke does not belong on this board (or anywhere), and just beacuse they used a pic of the president does not give it a free pass to be posted on politics board IMO.

An NPR piece (I believe it was NPR) about conservatives declaring a "gun appreciation day" is also in bad taste on the part of the conservatives doing so, yet would most likely open up a conversation that needs to be had and that we will more than likely be having more than once on here after this recent tragedy unless discussing this topic is now a no-no.

I guess I'm confused as to how the decision is made whether or not to delete a post on here (and I have been for some time). Unfortunately a lot of what goes on in politics is in very poor taste. I happened to find the entire "forceful rape" and Sandra Fluke "slut" topics before the election in extremely poor taste as well as calling pro-choice people/politicians "murderers," yet I would never report a post dealing with those topics. If it's based on the number of times a post is reported, please keep in mind that some folks will report just about anything linked to a particular moniker, and I hope that this delete was a result of trying to grease a squeaky wheel(s) on a report message kick. If it was the subject line, why not ****** it out and leave the article?

Moderator's privilege? Let's cut her a break. We have at lot of latitude and - as many reactions as readers.BTW

[ In Reply To ..]
I do share your sense of what is in bad taste.

Given what's on here all the time, though, I mostly smile at the sort of things that turn out to cause one person to feel it's just gone TOO far. Remember when a derogatory comment about Clint Eastwood was removed because he was a nice gentlemen and we should leave him alone? LOL. But we're inured to racist slurs around here, up to our necks in them a good part of the time. Poor Mr. Eastwood and his empty chair were something new.

It happens. I CAN smile and shrug, though, and not worry about the forum being ruined by raising the standard of behavior out of the mud because deletions are very rare in the face of what must be constant challenges.

They are not as rare as you think. Not everyone says something though. - Al Fabbet

[ In Reply To ..]
That's kinda my point.... there is plenty of bad taste on this board. I'm Just wondering what the deciding factors are on whether to remove or edit. If it goes by the number of reports to the moderator, perhaps a little more review/looking into the post's content is needed. If you remember correctly, the Clint post was made by JTTB... a moniker sure to cause a report frenzy. I could be completely wrong here, but it just seems odd that something like this (or the clint post) is a no-no but the food stamp post (for example) remains.

Please excuse typos... in a rush. Have a good one.
I have wondered how many complaints are made - and by whom AND suspected that
[ In Reply To ..]
the most offensive posters (what is more "bad taste" than the content of the evil lies constantly spread here, racist and otherwise?) were the most likely to complain about others.

I don't know how many moderators we've had when I've been here, but now and then a deletion has made me feel I could probably guess at the political orientation of the deleter. But always a guess, never sure. And never more than just displeased.

In this case, if there were bias and the tolerance of true "bad taste" more than simply being inured to the slime that's part of free speech, I'm guessing pointing it out would basically fix it. Although responses might occasionally be weighted to take into account the degree of a complainer's distress (as opposed to validity of complaint, and I'm just guessing here), I do believe the overall goal is to be fair.
it does seem odd; agree - nm

it's not about reactions, it's about standards - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no reason for a post to be deleted because some doesn't like it. Lots of stuff gets said here. The difference is, most of us don't report posts just because we don't like them, and a post being reported should not be the litmus test for the moderators to delete it.

I totally agree. That post and doctored - food stamp photo post

But here's an idea... save the image and have it printed on a t-shirt (you can do this on line or print on special iron-on paper) and wear it around town for various opinions.

I can come back on tonight and discuss this more in-depth, but right now I have work coming in. Let me know.

how extremely ironic - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't believe there is any kind of decision-making process involved. I believe a post gets reported and an action is taken whether it makes sense or not.

I have noticed a renewed presence from the far right recently, and along with it, an increase in extremist views and incendiary language. When the board gets like this, it's usually only a matter of time before posts from the left start getting reported and deleted. At least, that has been my experience.

How terribly ironic that RC's post, which shed light on the irony and poor taste of gun appreciation day, was itself targeted - likely by someone on the right who doesn't like their hypocrisy being pointed out by someone on the left.

Absolutely! - nm

So sorry. I appreciated your post. It's sad and pitiful that it was deleted.

I'm still trying to figure this out... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I see you got some dislikes on your post today, and I can't quite figure it out. It seems to me that if posters agree that taking Sandy Hook lightly is tasteless, then I would tend to conclude that they would also agree with your attempt to raise the topic of Gun Appreciation Day for discussion.

It's paradoxical to me. It kind of reminds me of the incident a couple of weeks ago, in which the right-wing gun lobby became outraged when a newscaster produced a gun magazine on the air. It struck me funny that they didn't want to talk about the laws surrounding ACTUAL firearms, but sought to prosecute the newcaster for ammunition show and tell!

Gun Appreciation Day is probably one of the holidays - MTSOs claim cause NJA for us.

[ In Reply To ..]
ER docs might disagree on that, however. Guns keep those ERs jumpin'.

careful! We're not allowed to be ironic about guns - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
...plus, someone from the right might think you really mean that guns are good for ER business.

I'm sure if you were to email the moderator - and ask...

I've been a moderator for years. - RC

Just curious, did you find my original post offensive? You seem to be sassing me and I have no idea why.

Not sassing - at all

[ In Reply To ..]
and yes, I did find your original post offensive - I read it as the moderator did (about guns killing kids). I'm not even close to being conservative and I find the whole gun appreciation day in bad taste as well, but it just seemed from your post that you were looking for an argument, not a discussion. My comment above was only to stick up for the moderator because I've done that job as well - it's no fun, there's no pay, and you just have to use your best judgment - unfortunately, not everyone will be happy with your judgment call and because of the fact that it's no fun and there's no pay, I think there's really no reason for the moderator to have to explain herself every time she edits or deletes something, that's all. No sass - I'd like to have the discussion as well, but I also know on this board, "discussion" is pretty limited.
Well, you are wrong. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
I also made it very clear that I would have been happy to change the title, after I deduced what might have happened.

It's all in this thread, if you read it.

I agree with you 100%. Looking for an argument - is the first thing I thought.
[ In Reply To ..]
I used to be the moderator here. I agree with the decision to remove it. It was in bad taste. Besides, the OP was not interesting in having a discussion about gun appreciation day when she threw in "bring the kiddos". Just an argument.

Moderator made the correct decision.
Wrong. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
If you used to be a moderator here, you'd be well aware of the fact that a joke like that would be completely out of character for me.

Anyway, I started a new thread, if you'd actually like to have a discussion on the matter.
I would, but not if your going to be insulting and roping people - in for an argument
[ In Reply To ..]
Not going to fall for it a second time.

your original post was no joke. It was insulting and only one reason for posting. To get arguments. Otherwise you would not have brought the "kiddos" into it. You mentioned nothing in your post about what you thought of the day or the article just "bring the kiddos". That is not wishing to have a discussion about the topic. Just a post to ridicule and poke fun of a serious topic.

You can say wrong all you want, but I and others are not wrong. Nice try at covering up a mistake. People knew though.

I still support the moderators decision.
You're still wrong. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
We can do this all day, but I don't see the point. I never insulted you, and I never made an off-color joke.

Your insinuations are horrible, but they're luckily not my problem.
Pssst.... you're being insulting and looking for an argument - Al Fabbet
[ In Reply To ..]
The OP stated her thought process behind her post - and apologize above if it came across the wrong way - and by you insisting that she was trying to insult and start an argument insinuates that she's lying on top of it.

That's insulting and would definitely start an argument where I come from.

Glad you're not a moderator anymore. The "kiddos" part should have been removed and replaced with ******, but then you wouldn't have anything to argue about, would you?
I wasn't the one looking for an argument. I didn't reply - to the poster you are talking about
[ In Reply To ..]
I was replying in agreement with another poster. Looks like the poster who keeps saying wrong to almost every post is the one looking for an argument. And her cheerleaders too.

Time to drop it. Got better things to do, especially when liberals are wrong but will never admit it.
lol. well then, she wasn't talking to you, was she! - doh

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not the OP, but I don't understand. You assert that the OP had "only one reason for posting. To get arguments." That doesn't make sense to me.

The original poster was deleted for speaking out AGAINST disrespect for the Sandy Hook tragedy. What arguments could she possibly have been looking for?
I'm afraid I agree that you should know RC is not - the person you're choosing to cast her as.sm
[ In Reply To ..]
What I don't understand is why you're doing it. Argumentative, indeed, and to what purpose?
And so we have the liberal gang up. - Go figure
[ In Reply To ..]
Liberals can go back and forth all night long ganging up on posters who give their opinions that don't align their theirs.

"Bring the kiddos" without even giving any input into why she posted the article shows no interest in a conversation about the article. Not a "hey what do you think of this" or even a simple "interesting article". Just "bring the kiddos". As though only conservatives own guns and ridiculing gun owners as though all conservatives let kids play around with guns.

Don't worry bout the liberal alphabet gang. You're not the first poster they've done it to and won't be the last.

I too support the moderators decision and you were a great moderator before her. Definitely I can see why you didn't want to deal with them anymore.
ahhh...the truth comes out - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
as predicted, and based on your post, it would appear that the outrage levied against the Gun Appreciation Day post came from the right. Good luck with the cognitive dissonance this must provoke.

Incidentally, just so you don't get too hopped up on persecution, this thread does not in the least represent a liberal gang-up. Actually reading the posts might help you discern this.
The offense you took is obviously an opinion not shared - by all posters who have replied and
[ In Reply To ..]
in fact some read something quite different. The notion that RC was spoiling for an argument is baloney, as we all can see in her (and others) expressed wishes to discuss the topic of gun appreciation day. That you are no longer a moderator is a good thing (that is, if you ever were one in the first place) if you think removing the entire post was the only solution. It would have been more appropriate to **** the offensive part (which STILL remains a mystery to many of us) and allow discussion to ensue, NOT to remove the entire post....especially since this issue is getting a lot of media coverage today, being the 2nd anniversary of the Tuscon mass shooting.
so rational, you're scary : ) - nm

So, in the wake of the mass murder of children, the gun lobby comes up with Gun Appreciation Day - and you want to shoot the MESSENGER? - because she reminded us of CHILDREN? You find a simple POST offensive in the face of a gun event staged on the heels of a bunch of shot children?
