Hi everyone. I am sorry I have not been able to post

Posted: Feb 1, 2012

until now.  I just feel worse than ever now.  I had my appt yesterday, but that was just to fill out paperwork (initial consultation).  I told the girl several times I cannot cope anymore.  I am looking desperately for a facility that will let me stay and that accepts my insurance.  I cannot find anyplace.  I was told by one place that federal law prohibits them from accepting Medicaid (WHAT?).  Makes no sense to me.  But I am working on it.  Thanks everyone for thinking of me.  I cannot access my email right now so just to let ya'll know I am not ingoring.  Thanks again!

you have to be a danger to yourself or others, I think that is the standard - or you've got major chemical dependency problems - there's got to be something BIG wrong with you - not being able to cope doesn't cut it - trust me, I feel like I can't cope, so what, there's no place I can go, no help I can get, nothing, cause I'm not screwed up enough. I may FEEL like I can't cope, but it's not about the FEELINGS, it's about the legal standard - are you a danger to yourself or others? Are you so strung out on drugs you can't take care of yourself? You're "gravely disabled" I think is the standard. Don't meet that standard, tough cookies. That's life.

(I do hope things get better for you, and you can get help. Just wanted to tell you what the standards of involuntary commitment are, I think voluntary commitment is the same - they make the judgment call though, not you.) Can you function? That's all they care. FUNCTIONING.

The deal is - sm

Yes, what you say is absolutely accurate. It would almost be tempting to just say, "OKAY, OKAY. I give up. Yes, I will kill myself. Now PLEASE admit me before I freak out." The problem is that it becomes a part of your medical record and could affect your credibility in all future interactions with medical personnel. This is not to suggest, however, that medical personnel consider patients credible anyway. (Whoops. Is my skepticism showing?)

I wish there were an intermediate level of mental health care. In other words, I'm a responsible human being, so I'm trying to stop a meltdown before (and not after) it spills on other people.

Well, stepping down from soapbox now.

Wow!! Both of these posts were incredibly - sm

rude and insensitive.

The first post was an eductational type of post to explain how the system works. I didn't see that the post agreed or highly disagreed with the state of the system; it simply explained the way it works in life. In fact, the poster wished the OP to be well.

Now it seemed to me the second post was from the original poster, the one who came onto a social web site to talk about wanting to be admitted to a psych unit. This post seemed to be from a person in a highly sensitive state, probably based on frustration on not getting an expected level of care.

So rude, no. Insensitive, no. I don't feel they were those things.

Two things I could comment on is that the person who explained how the system works was correct. Regardless of how we want the system to work, that is how it works to determine who gets immediate in-you-face care. Accessing high-level mental health services is difficult and the ones who need it the most can be the most easily frustrated and give up, often with deadly outcomes. So going back to the original post from a couple of days ago, I think the person who asked if the poster was a danger to him/herself or others and also advised the use of 911, well, that was the most spot-on advice the OP could have relied on - in the limits of this social web site.

The second is, does a person who is truly unbalanced post in the manner as these have become. First I thought I heard "I need help" only it was followed by "wow, you guys are great!" with some euphoric responses. If this poster needs help, I think this is the wrong media for getting immediate high-level mental health care. I think the OP does need help, more than can be offered here.

now I'm off my box.

I wish you good things in your life.

Did not mean to be rude - or insensitive at all

I think the mental health system fails to address a whole segment of the population that could benefit from services but don't need to be involuntarily admitted and retained against their will. If anything, my heart goes out to someone who admits defeat ("How can I get admitted! I know I need help!") but is casually dismissed as not needing enough help. Allowing people access early on could prevent a full-blown crisis later.

Best of wishes to the OP in getting the assistance she needs and deserves.

So sorry you haven't found help yet. In reading my insurance coverage for this year, I have seen so many changes that are not covered, it's disgusting. I have a heart problem and every test I think I am entitled to, I get an answer, "We don't cover that." So I get what you're going through. In a case of depression/? mental health issue, I feel your pain as you used to be able to check into a facility for 30 days, no questions asked. Have you sought out counseling through a church office, they often have pastoral counseling, etc., which would give you someone to talk to at least. Does the state you live in have a social services department you can call? Someone was correct in informing you this will become a permanent part of your medical record so please be careful to whom you speak and what you reveal about yourself and your problems, you do not want a "label" that will follow you around. Talk to people you trust, and if you believe in a higher power, pray. It's hard to address your problem when we don't know what it is, if it's substance, you can find a "sponsor" and if it's childhood issues such as alcohol in the family, you can look up Adult Children of Alcoholics or Alanon, at least start somewhere. Just don't hurt yourself, nothing is worth hurting yourself for, you are one of God's precious children and you are important and worthwhile. Please don't give up hope. Keep us informed and those of us who care will be thinking of you. Sorry if I misspoke somehow, but don't understand what it is that is bothering you and what subject to address except to wish you well in finding the right people to help you. You are very important to us, stay positive.

I would contact County Health, Social Service or - sm

or look for a Community Action Agency. They all usually have some counselors who can perhaps act as an advocate for you. They can help you work through the system and find a place that will help you.

Check Local Church - DS

[ In Reply To ..]
Check your church. They very often have trained, licensed therapists to help and will either not charge you, or charge you on a sliding scale (whatever amount you can afford).

Don't just let this sit and eat you because the "bigger guys" aren't taking you in.

After Reading The Jesus Is Coming Post And Then Hare Krishna Mantra Post...Apr 21, 2010
I was wondering exactly what kind of "faith" board this is. The poster, Catherine, in the Jesus is Coming thread felt this was the "wrong forum" for posting one's religious beliefs while another posterior in that thread says that this "faith" board is meant to be all inclusive meaning persons of all faiths can post their beliefs here. I guess I wrongly assumed that the use of the word "faith" meant Christianity as it is my belief that Christianity is the only valid belief system worshiping ...

This article was written by Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration and Chairman of Algore's campaign. The announcement by Alabama Rep.
