You simplify Chris' point. References to "Chicago-style politics" carry their own inferences. Those bright enough to realize it know what's really going on. Unfortunately, those that aren't bright enough to see through it also vote.

Look, mentioning food stamps over and over feeds into the racist sterotype of the young able-bodied black welfare recipient who would rather take your money than work. Then you got all the outrage over supposed luxury living with flat screens, Xboxes, iPhones, etc., that "we" pay for. The blah people are basically stealing from you.
To the racist base (and there are people out there who are, and I know because I've heard 'em talking with my own 2 ears), the mention of food stamps basically reinforces their twisted way of thinking while it goes over other people's heads. And if it goes over your head, it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Hence the name "dog whistle" because it's only meant for the dogs to hear.

Actually, there are a lot of hard-working people out there whose pay is so low that even though they work for a huge corporation that makes tons of money (can you say Walmart?), they are eligible to get food stamps. Even worse for the Walmart employees, they have no choice but to turn around and spend their food stamps in Walmart because that's the only place they can afford to shop. And, unless they changed their policy, their employee discount doesn't cover grocery items. Walmart is the biggest "welfare queen" around, and not many people have a problem with it.

So all I did was explain how calling Obama a "food stamp president" for example is most certainly a racist dog whistle.
I understand that people want to make the welfare system more effective - I'm one of them - but that's a completely different topic than the one being discussed. Since this thread is starting to get buried, if you want to start a new one on this subject, I would be more than happy to participate. I actually have a lot to say about it.
