Lots of Changes Coming to Obama's Staff

Posted: Nov 8, 2012

Here's the talk:

♦ Treasury. The current White House chief of staff, Jack Lew, has the inside track to be named Treasury secretary to replace Tim Geithner. Another name floating around is Erskine Bowles, who was a White House chief of staff for former President Bill Clinton.

♦ Chief of staff. Names that have been mentioned to replace Lew (who followed Bill Daley who came after Rahm Emanuel) include senior adviser Valerie Jarrett. Jarrett also oversees the White House offices of intergovernmental affairs and public engagement. Jarrett's role is larger than her titles suggest; she is a counselor-at-large on a variety of matters, often travels with the president and is a personal confidante to both the president and Mrs. Obama.

Another name mentioned is Ron Klain, an attorney who most recently was helping Obama in debate prep. Klain has been chief of staff for Vice President Joe Biden and Vice President Al Gore.

♦ State. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is eager to leave. I've heard that United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice is at the top of the list to replace her -- even if she has to navigate through the controversy over the timeline she offered about the murders of the four American diplomats in Benghazi, Libya.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been very interested in the spot, but quitting his Senate seat would trigger a consequence: another battle over a Massachusetts Senate seat. Republican Sen. Scott Brown, defeated Tuesday by Sen.-elect Elizabeth Warren, could start plotting a comeback.

♦ Defense. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta commutes back home to California almost weekly and is said to looking for an off-ramp in the next months. One name mentioned is former Undersecretary Michele Flournoy -- who would be the first woman in the spot.

♦ Education. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, the former Chicago schools chief, wants to stay -- and there is no plan for a change.

♦ Attorney General. Attorney General Eric Holder would like to leave eventually -- but does not want to seem as if he were run out of office over the "Fast and Furious" gun-running controversy. The top name to replace him is Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

♦ Transportation. A bit back, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood signaled one term might be enough; I'm told he may be persuaded to stay on -- at least for a while.

♦ Agriculture. Secretary Tom Vilsack was interested in staying -- but that was when his wife, Christie, was running for an Iowa House seat. She lost Tuesday, so the couple may be rethinking their future.

Or is it just because I was the one who posted this? I believe it's the last one.

Prove me wrong on the last one. (shaking my head)

Had you put sm or anon or something they don't recognize you moniker you would not have gotten a dislike.

I'm not sure how I feel about the changes. Getting rid of the tax cheat is good, but I don't know anything about the new one. Holder has got to go and he should be headed to a jail cell. Jarrett is the truly truly scary one. She already stated she's going to be going after anyone who didn't vote for Obama and said "there will be hell to pay". It's a pretty scary country to be in when one party is going to get revenge at anyone who didn't vote for their party. Guess I'm getting a little bit of a feel of how the people in other countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea feel. Glad Hillary is going. She was never qualified for the position. The rest of them I'm not familiar with so can't comment on any of them.

But just wanted you to know it's a normal thing for this board. If conservatives post using their usual moniker libs don't read the message, they just open it to dislike. It's your "dislike badge of honor" :-)

Either way I liked your post and I know other conservatives do to.

Thanks. I like your posts, too. - backwards typist

Geithner should have gone in the beginning with the first group that exited Obama's when it was found that he didn't pay his taxes.

Jarrett has a real hate for anyone who doesn't love her Obama. I noticed that back in 2009. Sometimes I think she has a real "thing" for him.

I'm going to do a little more research on the other names. Hopefully, they won't be as bad as some that in his administration now...and hopefully, he won't bring Van Jones back. If he does that, then I know where this country is going for sure.
I've heard Van Jones is still running things, but from - behind the scenes

I read that somewhere and I'll have to find it again. I heard he still advised Obama, just not out in the open like he used to. I'll do some searching to see if I can find the article.

I'll need to do some research on the others I don't know too much about, but I'm not the least bit surprised to see Leon Panetta go - he's a smart man and I think he feels like he's in a bad spot and is getting out while he can.

Definitely wear your dislikes as a badge of honor :)

I agree about Valerie Jarrett being the scariest one of all. Rumor has it she is having secret talks with Iran. It's just rumor, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit. Since she was born there, she probably has old friends and probably even family. Maybe some friends in high places.
Probably not. Her American parents move from Shiraz - when she was five.
[ In Reply To ..]
She speaks Farsi. Ergo, it makes sense she would travel with SOS Clinton and Huma Abedin and would prove to be a valuable asset when explaining the finer points of sanctions escalation and the consequences of expansion of their nuclear program.

Long on Fox flap, short on real facts.
I guess you prefer CBS. FYI, I haven't read Fox all day (sm) - Aunt Sue

To say Fast and Furious was a failure would be to say that the Hindenburg performed poorly. You can see right from the name we were in for something stupid. I'm rarely surprised by the government doing something stupid, but that one was unbelievably stupid. I'll be glad if Holder gets pushed out.

I pray that Kerry doesn't get in. During the 2004 campaign I had a hard time keeping my food down while watching him. Sadly, I still had to vote for him - if not I would lose my liberal card and be exiled to the third party wilderness LOL. I don't want to have to sit down and hear him dictate the breadth of human history in monotone.

Sorry you got a dislike for making a neutral post. It wasn't me. It doesn't take much for someone to make a permanent enemy on the other side of the aisle though. A few people have replied to my posts in the past, saying they didn't read it, but knew I was wrong and potentially a member of al-Qaeda. A half-Jewish member of al-Qaeda... I smell a sitcom...

I'm with you on Holder and Kerry. - ZvilleMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I know his was a tough job, but Obama could have done so much better than Holder - he didn't exactly handle things well.

And Kerry - you nailed it with the monotone! Maybe if he gets the job, he won't give too many speeches - just travel a lot :)
