Independents also expect Ryan to do substantially better than Biden, although aren't quite as excited as Pubs over the man some are describing as the "new intellectual leader" of the Republican Party. Yes, that IS Ryan they're talking about.

Hmmmm. Maybe they're right... - (see message)

...and maybe they're wrong. I guess we'll see tonight!

Ryan always seems over-confident (even slightly cocky)....in fact, I think "cocksure" is the term I'm looking for! (LOL) Whenever I see him together with Romney, it always feels to me like HE'S the one at the top of the ticket. Maybe he's just able to project extreme confidence without really feeling it, but who knows.

I notice that Ryan - (Cassie)

often, OFTEN smiles without showing his teeth--that tight-lipped smile. It made me start to wonder if that has a psychological meaning since I've also noticed that the whites of his eyes show below his irises, and I've always felt like that was an indicator of something negative. Anyway, I googled about the smile thing, and I found this:

There's an expression that goes: "The snake smiles but shows no teeth." Explanation of the meaning of that expression: "It's a warning to beware of deception; those who invite with a smile (and appearing friendly) but don't reveal their true nature."

Makes me stop and go, "Hmmmmm." :-D

Cockiness is his style, and I find it, though NOT his extremist - ideology, attractive, but twice in the

past two days he was visibly discombobulated when journalists asked him questions for which he didn't have well practiced answers. And he should have--they were rather predictable questions about things being discussed right then.

Cassie, apparently he's a little behind on his acting lessons? :) Romney's hiding everything but has learned to shine those pearly whites at every opportunity, even if all that phony exuberance does obviously come hard. NM
Ryan is very respected all through Congress. - If he wins, you will predictably say.. liar.nm

Go to "Google Images" and search: "paul ryan smile"; then search: "joe biden smile." If you find that kind of thing revealing, it's just kind of interesting.

My son doesn't like to be photographed with an open-mouth smile because he thinks his teeth are ugly. It would be too bad if people assumed he was "snaky" because of an insecurity.
I, too, used to do that.... - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
...in all my school photos, before I got braces. I had terrible teeth and didn't like to show them in pictures. I can understand that completely. I haven't seen his teeth closely enough to tell, but I kind of doubt that that's the reason Paul Ryan smiles with a closed mouth, though.

I'm sorry; I didn't mean to imply that your son or anyone else who smiles that way is "snaky," and sometimes people whose whites show below the iris have a medical disorder (thyroid, I think). It's just one piece of the picture that, like it or not, people will use to judge how they feel about a candidate, whether they realize it or not; sometimes it's a subconscious thing, where we just get a hunch about someone. I know I have MY hunch about Paul Ryan, and you probably have yours! :-)
P.S., SK1 -- - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
I understand you feeling defensive about the snake comparison as we all feel defensive about our kids. I want to add that the snake quote is just an expression that I read; those aren't my words. It's like an "old proverb" kind of thing.
Not defensive.... - SK1
[ In Reply To ..]
The only reason I shared the example was to illustrate the futility of trying to read some hidden meaning in something that could be as simple as a personal insecurity.
O.K., SK1. - (see message)

I guess I can't win, even when I'm trying to be nice. That's the problem with written communication, I guess...can't hear a person's tone of voice.

I think it's a good thing to be defensive of our children; it's an instinctive thing, like a mama grizzly.....pardon the Sarah Palin reference. (LOL) I would defend my children to the death! :-)
My hunch about Paul Ryan... - SK1
[ In Reply To ..]
Is that he's scary smart, a numbers guy, very analytical, probably too much so, that Romney probably brought him on to level some of his own deficiencies and to appeal to younger voters, and that Ryan is probably more conservative than I would like him to be.

But I base that on his words, actions and past record, and my observations, nothing more.

Here's something kind of - interesting (SM)

[ In Reply To ..]
about the whites-showing-under-the-iris eye thing. This is just a link to a discussion board, so not proving or disproving anything; but if you're interested in this kind of thing, it's sort of a fascinating discussion. John and Bobby Kennedy had sort of the same thing going on with their eyes, but I'm pretty sure at least John's was due to his thyroid disease....don't know about Bobby.

What do you mean "without really feeling it"? How do - you know what he feels?

The poster just below you is right. What I meant was SUPPOSED to be in his favor...that maybe he's just able to APPEAR extremely confident (or, the way it comes across to me sometimes as "cocky"), but he's actually feeling humble and not overly sure of himself inside. Extreme anything isn't a good thing, in my opinion....even extreme confidence. It's always good to show a little humility.
Humility? Love it! - Tell that to the
[ In Reply To ..]
arrogant Democratic presidential candidate. His extreme confidence in himself was totally misplaced at the debate.
You might be right. - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
Obama may have been too confident in himself before that first debate. Maybe that's what hurt him. But, the subject of this thread is Biden/Ryan, so that's why I was just talking about Ryan here. I personally find Ryan to come across as cocky. Maybe I'm in the minority about that. We'll see how the rest of the American public feels after they get a better feel for him in the debate tonight. If they love him, they have every right to do so.

I hope they ask about his 2+ hour marathon - Still cannot get over that one

[ In Reply To ..]

I'm slightly lost about - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
...which lies you mean by gratuitous ones and ones just for the pleasure(?). Are you talking about lies to aggrandize oneself, like running a 2-hour marathon! :-)

I have a relative who is kind of a pathological liar about a lot of things, but she often tells lies about things she's done that are highly exaggerated. This isn't just my opinion; I know it for a fact. She has low self esteem, and she needs to boost herself in others' eyes.

I'm not saying this is the case with Paul Ryan...I think possibly he just couldn't remember his exact time on the marathon and threw out that number there without thinking about how far off it sounds. I'm just using my relative as an example of one liar I know personally. Pathological liars are pretty intriguing. A lot of their lies are told for no purpose at all--not to cover something up; not to keep from hurting someone else's feelings; not for financial or other gain; not to get out of doing something. It's almost as though they HAVE to lie...or lie just because they like to get away with fooling people.
NO ONE forgets the time of their one and only marathon - 26.2 Miles
[ In Reply To ..]
That would be like Lance Armstrong forgetting to take some performance-enhancing drugs.
Yes, gratuitous--the ones that make people roll - their eyes and wonder why. Ryan flat lied SM
[ In Reply To ..]
said he ran marathonS and that his BEST time was about 2 hours.

He has, in fact, run 1 marathon in his life and the exact time has been published by the organization that put it on and keeps records. It was approximately double the time he claimed, and instead of leading the pack he came in long, long after the leaders finished.

Gratuitous stupidity in this case.
Thanks for that explanation. :-) - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
I wasn't quite sure whose lies you meant were gratuitous or for pleasure. After all, there's a whole lotta accusations of lying going on during a major election! :-)

Believe me, I'm not a Ryan fan in the least. My son run only one marathon in his life, and they DO publish everyone's times...in fact, I think if I google his name and the name of the marathon, I can still find his time on the internet (and that was about 7 years ago).
Interesting. That they keep figures for each runnerl - was a surprise to me. NM
