Just a couple of observations about

Posted: Aug 28, 2012

Rick Santorum's speaking style reminds me of a preacher/minister.  That's not a good/bad judgment...just my impression.  His speech was the most passionate of the night.

Ann Romney's speech was likable enough.  She seems like a sweet lady who, of course, loves her husband.

Chris Christie: Angry, scoldy, mean, yelling.

Aside from Ann Romney speaking lovingly about Mitt Romney, I didn't feel like there was enough reference to MITT ROMNEY by the other speakers.  I thought part of these conventions was to boost and "introduce," if you will, the nominee to viewers who may not have been paying much attention until now.  It almost felt like they were trying to avoid the elephant in the room (haha--pun intended)--that Romney isn't all that likable, even to the Republicans.

When the camera picked up Mitt and Ann in the audience, listening to the subsequent speakers (after Ann had spoken), I didn't think either one of them looked particularly engaged or excited/happy to be there.  Granted, cameras can catch people at just the wrong moment, but there were at least two shots of them that I thought they seemed slightly......can't put my finger on the word I want, but maybe "disengaged"?

Looking forward to Paul Ryan's speech tomorrow.

What were some of your observations?  I'd appreciate hearing something besides the words "Kenya," "socialist," and "Obama."  I'm just curious what others' impressions were of the Tuesday night speakers.  Thanks!

as a speaker. I just find it weird when people go after each other and bash each other until one loses and then all of a sudden the "loser" is all on board now like they never disagreed with them ever. lol I felt the same way with Obama and Hillary when they went at it and then she jumped on board with him.

I agree with you though, they really need to vamp up on Romney's likability factor. That is, IMO, the only thing keeping Obama going. So many people still like the guy even with things being the way that they are. Uh-oh...I said Obama, didn't I? ;) It is true though....he is likable and that has gotten him really far.

I didn't say socialist or Kenya though..oh wait..crap...I just did. ;)

LOL, Trigger Happy.... - ...I can take a joke. :-)

[ In Reply To ..]
Cute comment there, TH. ;-)

Good point--it DOES make it feel disingenuous when the primary opponents come on as if everything they said formerly is all forgotten, and Hillary's change of course last time felt similar.

But again, getting back to the RNC...I think this week and this convention is (or should be) time to talk about Romney, not Obama.

Well...surely you knew someone would - Trigger Happy

just have to say those words because you asked us not to. LOL

I agree with you though...the whole purpose of this is to sell Romney and I just don't think they are...at least not for the undecided or independents.

And I don't care how angry Christie comes off...I can't help but like the guy. It is nice to finally have someone bluntly tell how it is without trying to sugar coat things or blow smoke up our butts.

...even if I don't like him personally. Look how Cristie is turning around his home state of NJ. He's bold enough to make the necessary decisions despite criticism. IMHO, too much emphasis is being given to "likeability" in a this election. I raelly liked Cristie's speech.
Well, what I find off-putting about... - ...Christie's delivery is it's...
[ In Reply To ..]
...kind of like when a dad is yelling and lecturing a kid, and, after a point, the kid is just making eye contact and nodding but has totally tuned out. Now, of course, if you like Christie's message, I suppose you don't feel that way....it's just my take on the scolding/yelling speaking technique. I'm not a great fan of "tough love," either, although I don't mean to judge because we didn't have major behavior issues to deal with in our children. Can't say what I would do in those shoes.

I haven't looked at the numbers, but I heard something about NJ still being very low in rank on some big key factors, in spite of how much Christie's turned around....I couldn't quote them all off the cuff, but I think they were things like education and employment figures (maybe crime--just don't remember what all this commentator was saying now). Sorry, I don't follow him that closely....just giving my impression of his speech on the opening night of the convention.
I can like tough, but Christie's an obnoxious boor. Have you seen - him responding to his own constituents who ask
[ In Reply To ..]
him the wrong questions? The whole 300 pounds 6 foot way too much bearing down, glaring, shoving into and over their personal space to "answer" them by intimidation? It's a regular routine of a man who should be treating his constituents with the respect he owes them. If this is his public behavior, what's his private attitude toward us? We all have things that push our buttons, and this guy is permanently off my list.

Frankly, both he and Santorum made Romney look better to me. Good for you, Republicans, and thank you for not making me worry what one of the others could mean to our country. Some may not be overly thrilled, but he's definitely the pick of the pack you were presented with. As for disengaged, I didn't see that, but the description made me smile. Even a tepid version of the hooting and hollering of a convention just isn't going to be Romney's thing. :)

While I didn't vote for Christie, I really do like his direct style. I listened to him on a radio program last week and he really seemed responsive to the folks who called into the show with issues. On the radio show he did say that people were hounding him to accept a position in Romney's cabinet and he said he wants to finish out his term and possibly run for another. I don't think he has any presidential ambitions. I think he is a really bright man despite his tough Joizy Boy demeanor. I do wish he would watch his diet better. He has a wife and kids to support and the fat jokes are annoying.

Does he have to keep shouting out "Mitt Romney", "Mitt Romney"? Maybe the Democrats don't get it, but people who know anything at all about politics know he was there endorsing Romney. Maybe it's because Democrats like things to be repeated over and over, like Obama's mantra, hope and change, hope and change. It's a form of brainwashing that I think Democrats have come to expect.
Christie gets peeved when the news people hound him like papparazzi - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
hounds Hollywood celebrities. If they would ask questions in the news conferences he holds instead of following him out the door to his car and trying to get him to keep answering questions, well....they deserve his "intimidation" as you put it.

When Obama holds a news conference, when it's done, it's done. There are no news people hounding him after the conferences. Why shouldn't it be the same way for a governor? They deserve some privacy, too.

Everbody knew exactly what they were getting with Crhistie and he has delivered big time. You know how Libs hate success of any Repub or Conserv, and will do all they can to diminish it. Just look at the posts higher up from one poster who always boohoos about "negativity" towards Obama, but has plastered her posts with hate towards Romney. Double standard is the cornerstone of the Democrats and the other is their obvious hypocrisy and hate. They don't even try to hide it anyone - it's too all consuming as their motivating factor in all they do.
Obama versus Romney - Bigpicture
[ In Reply To ..]
Consider a few key issues before you mark that ballot for Romney in November. He was a pioneer of outsourcing jobs to other countries so he could pocket even more money from his companies. President Obama is very much against outsourcing and working to bring jobs back here where they belong.

Romney also wants to overturn the Affordable Care Act. How many of us are stuck working for a company that treats us like dirt and pays us next to nothing just because we need the insurance coverage? IC status is not even an option for many of us, but hopefully it will be soon.

Any MT who is struggling financially should do their homework before Election Day.

Christie is just out there...and mad (lol). I do have to say he's entertaining though.

I thought Boehner was awful. The bar thing went on way too long and in the process lost its momentum. Maybe I'm predisposed to dislike him since he's a pub (lol), but I swear the man only has one facial expression.

Ann was okay and did do a good speech, however, I think she would have been more effective if she had maybe talked about personal experiences with Mitt. Just something to make him seem more human. Just saying that he can do it didn't really hit the mark.

I think if Romney has any hope at all of winning this thing, he's going to have to show some kind of emotion.

Nikki Haley (not sure of the spelling)....I'm not very familiar with her, so maybe this is truly how she is, but she struck me as putting on a "Sarah Palin" imitation. Something about her delivery said "Mama Grizzly" to me. :-D

Mitt and Ann Romney sure do have gorgeous teeth! :-) They looked dazzlingly white (on my TV screen, anyway) which really was set off by Ann's deep red lipstick. This is totally, 100% superficial, but Ann's lipstick didn't quite go all the way to the end of her lip on her top right right lip, and that was kind of distracting to me while she was speaking. LOL....that's dumb and irrelevant, I know; but I guess it's understandable that they try to plan every little detail for these events since optics apparently DO have an effect on viewers.

Review of the evening.... - SK

First, to everyone, your comment have given me a giggle to go with my morning coffee.  Thanks everybody!  Laughing

I didn't get to see the whole evening, but of those I saw.....

I was kind of surprised that they had Rick Santorum on there, too.  May heaven forgive me, but I've kind of wanted to b*tch slap him from the day he started running.  Something about that sanctimonious smile, I think.  I didn't get to hear him speak.

Nikki Haley is one smart gal.  I don't know much about her politics, but have been impressed with her when I've seen.  To whoever said she reminded them of Sarah Palin, there was one moment where something came out of her mouth and I said, "Wope, she just went Sarah!"

I love Chris Christie!  He's probably the most "unpolitician politician" I've ever seen.  What's in the man's head is out his mouth.  I don't think that his speech was the most inspiring I've ever heard, but I so enjoy listening to him that I didn't care.  Smile

Scott Walker.... Uninspiring.  Embarassed

Missed John Boehner... Did he cry?  Cry

Ann Romney, well, I think she did a good job.  She didn't seem to try to pretend to be someone she's not, which I respect.  I think the tag line you'll hear played over and over is the one (and forgive my poor paraphrasing) about not hearing about her husband's good deeds because he felt it was a privilege not a political soundbite (or whatever).

Did Condoleezza Rice speak?  If so, I missed it.  She rocks.

Since we're characterizing the people, every time I see Mitt Romney, of his personality I think, "What IS it about that guy, he just seems to awkward!" and have never been able to put my finger on it.  I finally heard someone on television define IT perfectly -- "He's like the weird uncle."  LOL  Ayup, that's it!

What a refreshing thread this is -- people of different philosophies able to talk without vitriol and with humor.... Love it!

None of these politicians can win--smile or laugh inappropriately, and we criticize them; keep a straight, non-animated face, and we criticize them. (We need to remember that when it's the Obamas' turn, too, and everyone is analyzing every smirk, smile, and frown.) You might be right that the Romneys were worried about looking like they were happy to be sitting there when the storm news was so uncertain. Possibly, it's just Mitt's personality, too.

Hey, thanks everybody, for keeping this thread pretty upbeat, without resorting to throwing out a bunch of barbs about Obama. When commenting on your own candidate's convention, if your only comment is what's awful about the other guy, it just makes it sound like you don't have much good to say about your own.

I'll be going out tonight so will have to DVR the fun....I don't want to miss Ryan's speech, especially since I assume it'll be the talk of the town for at least the next few days (if not longer).
