Juan Williams FIRED: NPR Sacks Analyst Over Fox News Muslim Comments

I feel like NPR should have reprimanded him but not fire him. Juan was arguing with O'Reilly, not supporting his views.

NPR announced late on Wednesday night that it has terminated the contract of longtime analyst Juan Williams over his comments on Fox News that, when he is on a plane with Muslims, "I get nervous."

NPR's media reporter David Folkenflik broke the news on Twitter.

Williams' comments came during a discussion with Bill O'Reilly on Monday's "O'Reilly Factor." O'Reilly asked Williams if he had been in the wrong during his now-infamous appearance on "The View" last week. (There, O'Reilly's statement that "Muslims killed us on 9/11" caused Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg to walk off the set in anger.)

Williams replied that he thought O'Reilly had, in fact, been right. He continued:

"I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Williams did go on to tell O'Reilly that he had to be "careful" to stress that he was not talking about all Muslims when he criticized some and that America was not at war with Islam.
He also compared blaming all Muslims for the actions of extremists to blaming all Christians for the actions of Timothy McVeigh. (O'Reilly responded that he was "done" being careful.)

In a statement, NPR said that it had informed Williams of its decision on Wednesday night, and that his remarks were "inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR."

Williams had been a contributor and analyst at NPR for decades, but his dual role on Fox News -- where he has also been a longtime and frequent contributor -- drew so many complaints from NPR's listeners that it asked Fox News to stop identifying Williams as an "NPR News Political Analyst" in 2009.

Their hatred and intolerance for anyone who doesn't spout their communist viewpoints has really come through loud and clear.

And the lady making the "psychiatrist" comment with a smirk on her face - funny how the ones who always say people who aren't liberals, progressives, communists are insane/whacko's are the ones themselves that need psychiatric care.

But good for Juan he's not with them anymore. Any place that suppresses reporting the news should not be in business. And good for Fox for extending his contract and giving him more money. Goes to show Fox is one of the best places that tolerates all viewpoints.

In case you didn't know this Soros gave NPR over a million dollars to buy reporters. Of course to report what he wants them to report and spread his hatred of anyone not following his communist viewpoints, and to spread his ultimate goal of New World Order (with him as the Grand Pubah of course).

NPR should not have fired Juan Williams. Mr. Williams is about as liberal as they go. Once in awhile I'll agree with something he says, but for the most part I don't. The kicker of the story is that he was disagreeing with O'Reilly about what he was saying.

The only reason they fired him is because he appears on Fox News. Now Soros goes and buys NRP and then they fire Juan. That's no coincidence there. I'm sure you're probably just irritated because Fox has extended his contract and he's getting 2 million dollars, etc., and now Fox is even better for doing that.

There was no "hissy fit" to throw. I don't agree with Juan most of the time, but at least I believe in freedom of speech. If people don't get both sides of a story (liberal and conservative) then you'll never get the truth. That's why MSNBC is doing so bad because they have no tolerance for anyone with an opposing viewpoint than theirs.

If you are perfectly fine with certain groups suppressing freedom of speech ask yourself this question. Would you be as supportive if it was the conservatives trying to shut down all liberals freedom of speech? No I didn't think so.

So...typical liberal with the drive by insult adding nothing the to the topic at hand.

Anyone who is not liberal doesn't have a chance on MSNBC. That is why their ratings are tanking. Liberals are only for freedom of speech when the person's opinion are the same as their own.

The difference between some of us is that some conservatives, even though we don't agree with Juan's viewpoints, feel that he was treated unfairly. I find it rather ridiculous that you as a liberal aren't offended at what happened to him. What? He isn't liberal enough for you too just like NPR.

I don't always agree with Juan and his view points but he seems like a honest and kind hearted person. His firing was uncalled for. There have been other "journalists" on PDR who have such far worse things and they didn't get fired.

NPR is wrong and I hope they lose their taxpayer funding. What a bunch of pinheads! I sincerely hope that Juan moves on from this and doesn't let this get him down.

I'm like you, I don't always agree with Juan. Most of the time I'd sit yelling at the TV - "Oh cmon Juan. Use a little common sense". ha ha, but I always respected what he said because at least he did his research and knew the subject matter he was talking about.

I hope he sues NPR and I hope they go down the tubes. Soros and his money should not be able to control the media.

If you think a news station is "bought and paid for" by a political party, well I just don't know what to say, except I highly suggest you stop listening to those left-winger talk radio shows. You're certainly not going to get any truth for them.

I may not like the slogan "Fair and Balanced" and it sure gets old hearing everyone say that. That and "we report you decide". They really need a new slogan, however, with that said, they are the only station right now that lets both sides (liberals and conservatives) speak. You certainly are not going to find that on any other channel. Maybe CNN sometimes but very rarely.

Even people in other countries watch Fox over the other channels because it it is the only station where both sides get a chance to speak and they respect everyone whether or not they agree or disagree with them. Sure don't hear that from Mathews, Olberman, Scarborough or any of the other crowd at MSNBC.

So yes, it is fair because all sides get to tell their viewpoint and yes it is balanced again, because they have both liberals and conservatives guests.

That Scarborough is very conservative and a Republican. However, he actually delivers logical reasoning and promotes a legitimate debate (unlike just about everyone at Fox EXCEPT for Shephard Smith--look, I can actually name two "opposing network" good conservative talking heads). I don't watch Matthews, but he is not as crazy as Beck, Bill-O, Hannity, Greta, or FAF.

Have you tried Rachel Maddow? She is incredibly well researched and if she makes an error (which is rare) you will see an apology from her. I suppose we could start giving you examples of all of Fox errors and omissions, but everyone already knows this and it is way to much work to start listing them all.

Ed Schultz is so hateful toward republicans. I thought Beckel was bad too, but nobody has Schulz beat yet. The loathing and smears and downright nastyness is really bad. I don't even think the Nazi's under Hitler were as bad as that man.

This is nothing new. The only thing new is that Fox already had NPR in their "sights". It is not uncommon to sign a non-compete clause (you probably have one in your MT contract) or for a company to hire and fire "at will". That is the way it is. I do think NPR did not handle this right and they made a mistake. However, I love their programming--it is about the only true fair and balanced information available for free to the public who cannot afford the cable networks.
