When I saw the Dow hit 17,000 Friday, I - sm

wasn't happy that the economy was "improving." Once again, Wall Street is getting rich, and the middle class and poor are getting more poor.

It almost felt like I was in the movie "Groundhog Day," in that this all happened before when the stock market crashed, and as usual, the mega rich got richer, and many middle class wound up being part of the poverty population.

I'm disabled with adult-onset cystic fibrosis. On June 2, I met with my CF doc and for the first time ever, my sputum culture came back showing what they call stenotrophomonas, and I was placed on 21 days of antibiotics, 3200 mg a day of Bactrim. As a result of all the antibiotics, I developed thrush, which I've never had before and which was very painful. For about four days, I completely lost my voice. It's now July 7, and I'm almost completely over it (I hope). I've also got a myriad of other diseases, including diabetes, which is a direct result of my pancreas shutting down (because of the cystic fibrosis).

I got married in June, and my husband is also on SSDI. We're very stressed about being able to make ends meet. He applied for and was accepted to be an election judge, which will pay him $100.00. In addition, as soon as I get the okay from my doc (IF I receive it), my husband and I plan on donating/selling plasma. He hates the idea of my doing it and refuses to take me with him until and unless I get the okay from my doctor, but I feel I have to because every single penny counts. (He is a very loving and caring man who places MY health needs before his own.)

As my disease progresses, my medical bills are also going to go higher, and even with Medicare, that's still 20% that I'm responsible for. Late in May, I needed to go to the ER because of my disease. I was not admitted, but I was dehydrated and was there for a few hours receiving fluids with a white blood cell count of 18,500. The bill for that ER visit is almost $13,000. I was supposed to go back and have a second CBC done, but I didn't do it because I don't want to incur any more bills. I'm on oxygen 24/7 and have a POC for when I leave the house, which isn't often. I'm one of those people you see in Walmart, riding in the electric cart while wearing portable oxygen.

All this talk about the economy recovering may be working for some people, but I personally do not see it.

I worked hard all my life (42 years), was a single mother who often worked two or more jobs at once in an effort to raise my daughter and try to be able to give her a nice childhood. I'd save all year, just so we could take a vacation to the beach once a year, along with camping trips almost every weekend, or playing Bingo at the local farmer's market.

I self-taught myself medical transcription (I had done legal transcription for years), and at first it was okay, but I, like I'm sure many of you out there, found I was making less money as time went on, even though my skills improved.

I know that many of you aren't going to like this (and I AM a Democrat), but I believe our resources for the poverty stricken should go to the AMERICAN CITIZENS instead of people who emigrate ILLEGALLY to the USA. For the most part, these people, if they do get jobs, are accepting very low-paying work, which is just bringing down wages for the rest of us. I believe there should be a MORATORIUM on ALL immigration until the middle class in this country returns to where it was, and the people who are truly in need are given priority over illegal immigrants.

We don't have enough money to take care of our own LEGAL citizens who need it, and spending it on a bunch of people who entered this country ILLEGALLY is just wrong.

At my age, I never thought I'd be in this position, and my own personal outlook for my future life has become very bleak financially, along with the progression of my disease(s).

I'd do anything to be able to work again, but the sicker I get, the more impossible it is becoming.

For those who would tell me to pull myself up by my bootstraps, I no longer have any boots, as much as I'd like to work again, in my condition, it's just impossible.

We're eligible for food stamps, and I just feel so ashamed to accept and use them.

Sorry for the long "tirade" here, but I know I'm living the final part of my life, and I just hope we can survive financially (We eat Ramen, hot dogs, spaghetti -- the cheapest food we can get.)

Again, I'm really sorry for this being so long, but I'm really afraid. :-(

This is what the safety is for, people like you. - I'm sorry for your health

I do agree with you that we have one big beast in Washington and the two-party system is just an allusion.

But at least the Democrats say they want to help the poor and senior citizens, while people like Paul Ryan want to get rid of the safety net that is crumbling and replace Medicare with a "voucher" system.

So I have to hang my hat on the party that appears to be on my side, instead of those who feel that only the 53% of people matter in this country. (Referring to Mitt Romney's quote about 47% of us "losers.")

When it's all said and done, though, in my heart I agree with you.

Social Security, and when someone is trying to mend it by proposing a fix, it doesn't mean they don't care about you, it means they care about the future. I would love to opt out of Social Security. I'm sure the retirement age will have to be raised in order to sustain it.

As for growth in other areas, even if the republicans vote for growth but just a slow down in the rate of growth, that's portrayed as a "cut" by slick politicians who know how to manipulate words.

I'm no fan of Rand Paul. I'm just saying anytime anyone tries to overhaul a government program it never works. Look at Social Security. No politician will even touch that.

I think the answer is individuals, not politicians of either party.

I have about 40 years in the workforce. I was not lucky enough to have a child, but until just recently I have been the primary caretaker for an elderly parent and disabled sister.

I went on two vacations of about 4 days each in the 40 years. Maybe 10 camping trips my entire life. Ate Ramen, tuna when cheap, and a lot of tomato soup and "lunch" meat. Did not get eye glasses when I needed them, put off dental appointments until I was in pain, and drove old cars that smoked when I hit the gas. I am facing some daunting health problems as I age--progressively losing my eyesight and neuro problems.

I knew and hoped that someday I would be able to retire and so early on I put money into retirement funds and 401-K. Quite frankly, I am thrilled about the stock market. The market has always been a place for the rich to get richer, but the 401-Ks have allowed responsible people such as myself to have a nest egg as well. I will not be rich in my retirement years, but I do not expect to have as many worries and actually expect to live better than I have for most of my life, except for the expected health problems.

Good luck to you. I hope you enjoyed those fun times with your child. As someone else said, you no doubt qualify for MA on the safety net (especially since you qualify for food stamps). I know that basically all of the blessings I have had have been due to the help that has been available through the democrats and I will support them until the day I die.
I'm 58, have a lot of the same problems. I don't have a car, my friends provide my rides, - I have no debt by choice,

I own my own home. I too have a 401-K thank goodness and my stocks are doing for the most part okay. I do own gold and jewelry and other things of value just in case the dollar tanks.

I am grateful for all the good advice from my parents and family for my health and good fortune. Also a sound mind which I pray for every day.

Good luck to you.

but only those who are really disabled. There are too many faking it or milking the system, which is another problem.

I don't see where anyone could dislike your post about the illegals.

Suggestion for you. Check on line for clinical trials if you think you could handle them. All treatments and appointments, even travel expenses for some, would be FREE. These clinical trials are rarely advertised, but you could probably check with CF, too, and see if they have anything happening.

In my area, you have to jump through so many hoops to get any kind of help and I, also being disabled, have been refused countless times for one reason or another and I refuse to waste any more time jumping through those hoops....especially since I can't drive anymore.

I wish you well and don't feel embarrassed to take SNAP. They aren't paper anymore. They're debit cards which most people wouldn't know if it's a credit card, bank debit card, or SNAP.
Thanks, Truthhurts - sm

I had sent my family doc an email asking if I was allowed to donate (sell) plasma, and I received his response yesterday:

"I'd recommend against it. Your body doesn't need any more stress."

So I kind of doubt if he would condone clinical trials (unless it had to do with diabetes, which I also have because the CF demolished my pancreas).

I see my CF specialist again in the beginning of September, and I'll ask at that time if there are any CF clinical trials going on. Thanks for that; it's a good idea that I hadn't thought of. They did ask me to participate in something before I think they asked me to agree to submit my medical data for research, and I immediately said yes, but there was no payment offered. (I just wanted to help with the ongoing research.)

I really appreciate your reply. Thank you.

of dumb political posturing. I worked in the health care industry during the Reagan years and saw him give huge power to the for-profit insurance industry. Those were the first "death panels," only Reagan called it managed care. We have been paying the price of those awful decisions ever since. No doubt the social security worker knew that there was some stupid regulation that he and you had to abide by.

Now I am seeing the impact of Obamacare in my reports of transcribing about people who are getting procedures now that they should have gotten long ago. People can now get insurance even though they have diseases and pre-existing conditions. Students who are having a hard time paying their college bills and health care at the same time have affordable options or can stay on their parent's policies.

EMR and outsourcing has taken away a lot of our work, but I am still working because I do acute care and have lots of op reports. Thankful many people now have the ability to have their care.

We tried 15 ways from Friday to explain it to him and then help him to understand it. He finally says, "Well, I don't think they'll work, but if the President thinks it's a good idea, I'll support him a hundred percent."

President Nixon: Well, what's the judgment?

And the reason that he can—the reason he can do it—I had Edgar Kaiser come in, talk to me about this and I went into it in some depth. Were you working in health care during Nixon years? I was working in health care during Reagan years (i.e., the 1980s) ICD-9s were implemented to provide a way to limit patient care. I worked with coding the ICD-9 system into our primitive computers. Ha! Throughout the Reagan years, health care providers began refusing coverage and denying care for "pre-existing conditions" or when illness occurred. I worked in close proximity to the billing department and clearly recall them talking about the HMOs only taking the paying healthy customers and leaving those without resources without care or else charging exorbitantly, which has only gotten worse through the years. Insurance companies started looking for excuses not pay claims and sold it as managed care, and this turned into the private insurance system we had prior to Obamacare.
