It's obvious to me that people who buy into Sanders' nonsense

Posted: Jan 19, 2016

This could be a book, but we'll take just one of his pronouncements because it represents the core of his philosophy:  "Real freedom must include economic security."

Really?  Is that the lesson you learned in World History and, more particularly, American History, assuming you didn't sleep through them?

I'm so glad that so many who built this country - indeed, so many who have contributed throughout history to the progress and betterment of mankind didn't equate "freedom" with "economic security".  People who risked everything, being guaranteed nothing, and often paid a heavy price, even sometimes with their lives.

I would be ashamed to introduce any of these people - the pioneers and pilgrims of every age down through history who brought us everything we enjoy today - to Sanders or to anyone like him.

Freedom has nothing to do with economic security - a term that in and of itself defies both definition and implementation except in what would be a very frightening, very dark place in which to dwell.

;

Most of what Sanders says sounds good but doesn't - withstand scrutiny.

Apparently, I'm not wealthy because greedy bankers on Wall Street and the fat cats in corporate board rooms either have my stuff or keep me from getting stuff, and Sanders is going to make them give it to me. The system is stacked against me. How can I help being a failure?

Reminds me of the song from West Side Story - "Gee, Officer Krupke" - in which everyone is to blame for our bad choices except ourselves.

"Economic good" is also a concept that people should learn something about. It's relevant to thinking about Sanders.

There's an interesting spreadsheet showing what would happen if you started out with $1000, bought something and resold it within 3 months for 25% profit, repeating that process and never taking anything out, for something like 8 years. You just keep reinvesting in the process. (The premise is by no means impossible. Anyone can buy something and resell it for 25% more if they know what they're doing - and you only have to do 4 transactions a year, plenty of time to find the next one.) I think you also add $100 in savings each month to the pile.

I don't recall the exact number, but you'd have something like $3 million, or perhaps more, in 8 years.

This was essentially the system we had in the early days of the country, when people were indeed becoming very wealthy.

But now, introduce the tax that would be levied on each profitable transaction. The moment you make the profit, you're liable for the tax, and reinvestment doesn't change that. Each profitable transaction is taxed - say, at 20%.

Now, at the end of 8 years, you have only something like $200,000, because taxation diminishes the compounding effect that would accrue on the profits otherwise.

Over the years, taxation in order to pay for a lot of wasteful, mismanaged and redundant social programs, silly research, etc., is what has actually become the chief impediment to wealth accumulation in our time. It's not a lack of opportunity. It's not mysterious "string-pullers" on Wall Street or in Washington.

Taxation. Oh, yes - and taxation is also the reason that companies don't want to stay in the United States.

So, let's have more taxation, shall we? I can't wait.

Thank you for bringing some sane reasoning to the subject.

I think I've seen your posts before and even though I may not always agree with them, I do enjoy reading them.

I guess it depends on your definition of economic security. - nm

Okay, I'll go first. In this context, I define "economic security" - as....
[ In Reply To ..]
..."The assurance of having access to the basic necessities of life, including food, shelter and clothing." Some would include education, healthcare and transportation.

It might surprise you to learn that this definition has nothing to do with socialism, nor is it even one that liberals can claim. And, it wasn't FDR's idea either. Follow the link.

I agree. To expand on the idea of those... - sm

basic necessities I would like to add that economic insecurity results in the stress of worrying about how far your money stretches, deciding whether to buy food or pay your rent a week late, buying food or a prescription, can you buy your kids shoes.

Freedom of economic OPPORTUNITY for all - not breaks for the rich - Vote Sanders

Sanders

Sorry - that's not what Sanders talks about. - Let me quote him at Georgetown University:

[ In Reply To ..]
Funny how people don't really listen. They hear what they want to hear. If Sanders were talking about OPPORTUNITY, he wouldn't be a socialist at all, by the way.

So here is what he did say as quoted in one of the liberals' favorite media, Huffpo. Read it and start doing some serious thinking:

Sanders’ widely anticipated speech explaining what democratic socialism means to him was hosted at Georgetown University’s new Institute of Politics and Public Service at the McCourt School of Public Policy. The independent senator from Vermont was greeted with rapturous applause by students who had waited in line in the pouring rain to hear his remarks.

Sanders’ speech invoked Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1944 State of the Union address, in which the president described “a second Bill of Rights" to provide more economic security for the American people. Sanders quoted Roosevelt, who said that “true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. Necessitous men are not free men.”

In other words, real freedom must include economic security,” Sanders said.

Now, go study Roosevelt a little more closely too. I think you'll be surprised that he was far from being the best President of the 20th century, as someone said below. Far, far from it.

"...rapturous applause by students" (for Sanders). - Tells you all you need to know.

[ In Reply To ..]
Not a spring chicken, but I remember when I was a "rapturous student." I didn't know jack, and neither did any of the other students, but we all thought we knew everything.

When students applaud, run the other way - as fast as your older, wiser legs will carry you.
Funny, as a student I remember "rapturous applause" for JFK, - and he won! nm

Let's Clear Up The Minimum Wage NonsenseOct 27, 2014
By "clear up", I mean "to the extent possible".  I've spent two weeks "in the stacks", reviewing more than 2 dozen of the more recent economic analyses on the subject of the minimum wage, from sources that are considered reasonably objective.  For the most part, I focused on studies published by the NBER.  Of course, there's never any absolute assurance of objectivity, but peer review offers some reason to hope for it.
