Sanders confronts corporations for tax
Posted: Jun 17, 2015
Sorry, no MTSOs.
Today, a group of 80 CEOs are lecturing Congress about the need to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, while lowering tax rates for millionaires, billionaires, and the largest corporations in America.
These are some of the same CEOs who head corporations that:
received a total taxpayer bailout of more than $2.5 trillion from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department and nearly caused the economy to collapse just four years ago;
outsourced hundreds of thousands of American jobs to China and other low wage countries, forcing their workers to receive unemployment insurance and other federal benefits;
avoided at least $34.5 billion in taxes by setting up more than 600 subsidiaries in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and other offshore tax havens since 2008; and
a dozen of these companies paid no corporate income taxes in at least one year since 2008, while receiving more than $6.4 billion in tax refunds from the IRS, after making billions in profits.
In other words, these are some of the same people who have significantly caused the deficit to explode over the last four years.
The last thing we need to do is listen to these deficit increasing CEOs.
Here are just a few examples of how the corporations these CEOs work for have significantly harmed our economy and the federal budget:

THAT'S why I like the guy. He doesn't pull - any punches with those crooks.

or are you still stuck on the essay?
Because both the torah & bible encourage corporate theft/greed, false accusation & malicious - personal attacks/slander;) ~Julia Sugarbaker
[ In Reply To ..]
....and that would be sarcasm, yes :)
Because of course the torah and the bible state exactly the opposite.
In fact, the NT focuses repeatedly and particularly on business and church/temple greed and theft as actually being the most deplorable of sins, from the words of Christ himself from the 4 gospels.
Only Pharisee Law of the OT and Paul spent more time on sexual sin, because unlike Christ, Paul tried to go backwards into Pharisee law to appease/please the Pharisees, simply to spare the lives of himself and the other new apostles.
These laws were once necessary because they were trying to propagate/increase in number, at the time, which of course, we no longer need - which is a fact that Muslims, Jews, and the type of Christians still living under Pharisee law/Paul worshippers (as opposed to Christ, the actual Messiah) don't seem to understand.
I had a friend who was self-employed IT once say to me, years ago:
"If someone has a bible verse on their business check to pay, I knew instantly it was no good, they're going to lie about it when I ask them about it, and I'll never get paid...then they'll say they're doing so well because "God is blessing them."
I apologized immediately on behalf of all us Christians for so many misdirected Christians giving people the wrong impression of us by exhibiting "selective" morality, as well as assured him that Christ himself said what would happen to people that worked iniquity in his name (Matthew 7:23)
We all sin, not saying that, of course, and I never said I didn't sin - I'm saying that playing the "selective morality" card has been overplayed and is not drawing a single soul to Christ - in fact, people are unfortunately leaving the church in record numbers as a result.
But in the end, God/Christ get the last word of judgment on how they led their lives, not us :)

More false accusation, since I clearly stated I AM a Christian (taken in by a Jewish family as a - teen, whom I adore) ~Julia Sugarbaker
[ In Reply To ..]
Just who do you think caused me to rethink my prior fundamentalist Christian beliefs BUT that Jewish family that took me in as a teenager? :)
So I guess Jesus was a antisemite/self-hating Jew for challenging the Pharisees then too, eh?
Thank God none of the Christians and Jews I'm close with ever acted like what I've seen done in God's name on this forum - with the latter being the sort of Christian brethren I ended up apologizing for, to my IT friend, in the aforementioned story.
But my friends and "surrogate" Jewish family don't think in "always/never" and "either/or" terms and would never persecute others or claim persecution falsely based on their own very real history of prior persecution.
I think it's hilarious the right wing is waving around the Jewish-loving flag now. Because even 30 years ago, right-wing Christians still wouldn't let Jews in their country clubs and private schools in the Midwest and South, much less their homes.
Now that same political party suddenly embraces conservative Jews as their new "BFFs", but liberal Jews are "self-hating jews"?
I call BS.
And 50 years from now, I predict the same thing will happen with muslims - and you can bet the right wing will repackage and sell it to us and try to cover their history with muslims with a faith flag, just like they do with Jews today;)
Because it's not about faith - it's about votes and power, tell the truth.
So sell the lies and political greed in some other temple, kid - I won't tolerate that crap to fly in my father's house/in his name, long as I'm around

Thank you for this info, particularly corporate taxes and CEOs - Julia Sugarbaker

Jeez, talk about "entitlements."
These companies and their CEOs received billions in massive government-assistance bailouts, pay little to no federal taxes (the profit from which trickled down on no one, clearly), have tax shelters in the Bahamas and the Caymans for their personal funds to avoid paying taxes.
And what trickled down on us?
A 2% payroll tax later.
Yet those CEOs on that list (who are all Republicans but one, btw) and other right-wingers STILL continue to whine about Medicare and the $36 dollars they have to pay in taxes a year for the poor for food stamps.
Do you happen to have a date when that "lecturing" occurred/is occurring or did I miss that? All I could find is it just says "today."
I went to his senate.gov site looking for it and got lost in some of the other articles on the main page for entirely too long lol.
In particular, I was reading his ideas about the "war on the middle class," because as I said last night, I wasn't very clear on where he stood on middle-class protection.
Turns out, his ideas are very similar to Elizabeth Warren's, except with more "oomph" in the taxing the wealthy more, which she avoids
I also saw the following on the main page - and the one thing I can say is that at least in principle and with oration, the man is on fire:
“A nation is judged by how it cares for its most vulnerable including the elderly and children. It is not acceptable that millions of elderly in this country are living in poverty and struggling to feed themselves,” Sanders said. “Instead of giving tax breaks to billionaires we should be expanding nutrition programs and other services for seniors,” Sanders said.
Now, he knew how to pull my heartstrings on that one. Because other countries at least privately care for their elderly, but not this country - we don't care for our elderly well, publicly or privately, this country is too selfish - and they want to be rewarded in tax breaks for it.
And there are still no tax breaks or financial assistance available for the caretakers of the elderly or terminally ill at present either.
These are great ideas - but my only concern is - how we gonna pay for that???
I applaud his courage in standing up to corporations (something Clinton and Obama are terrified to do fully), but it's unrealistic to expect that to ever really happen with our current members of Congress, most whom got where they are through the help of corporations.
Therefore, IMO, it is unlikely he'll even have Democratic support in Congress in succeeding at increasing taxes for these corporations.
Unfortunately, most people just don't want to believe it is Congress members from BOTH PARTIES who are protecting corporate America, and unfortunately, this has included Obama more than we'd care to admit.(The 2009 bailouts but later 2% payroll tax for middle/poor classes should've been proof enough of that.)
Some bailouts were necessary, if they failed, our economy would've been even worse off. However, I see no reason to make the middle clas and poor pay for it, considering these CEO and other executive salaries and their tax shelters. They could've paid for the bailouts themselves in some cases.
And I guarantee you if Lee Iococca had still been running Ford or Chrysler, he WOULD have used his private, personal funds to help do so AND cut his own salary (and did in the 70s/early 80s). People give so much credit to Reagan, but they don't realize the old-school Republican business leaders were more noble too, and had a hand is saving our economy then.
Hilarious, modern Republicans don't consider government bailouts as being "big government/government assistance" even MORE than social welfare.

That's also what I have been seeing. The companies are making more money than ever before, taking advantage of those tax breaks, but they are pleasing stockholders by cutting costs (and people) in order to do it. That's very good business for them, but not so much for Americans who need to work.
This is not a political comment, because it has been happening under both administrations.
