I guess no one saw this coming--Cutting family planning means

Posted: Mar 3, 2013

"Using taxpayer dollars to finance family-planning services has become politically thorny in Texas, largely because of Republican lawmakers’ assertions that the women’s health clinics providing that care are affiliated with abortion providers. In the fiscal crunch of 2011, the Legislature cut the state’s family-planning budget by two-thirds, with some lawmakers claiming that they were defunding the “abortion industry.” Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, found that more than 50 family-planning clinics had closed statewide as a result.

"Now, amid estimates that the cuts could lead to 24,000 additional 2014-15 births at a cost to taxpayers of $273 million,  lawmakers are seeking a way to restore financing without ruffling feathers."

Additional costs to us are less concern to me than - welfare of the babies who end in need anyway. sm

Approximately 50 million Americans know what it is to be hungry, many of them chronically, way too many of them children with busy little bodies that need good nutrition to grow strong and healthy.

Well, DUH. - Texas geniuses.

Pro-lifers quit caring about the babies the second they are born...

Assumption - mistruth - sterotype - a lie, actually.

.
Agree it's a lie as stated. True, many so-called "prolifers" are just - game players supporting their team,
[ In Reply To ..]
and their team is far more interested in lowering tax rates, opening tax loopholes, and deregulating government contractors than caring for children, before or after birth.

That said, lots of "prolifers" are good, decent people who care every bit as much about the welfare of children after birth as before and are willing to give of themselves to make sure they're well cared for.

Note also that not all "prolifers" are conservatives; many are moderates and liberals. I suggest future insults be directed specifically to the hypocrites who deserve them so richly.

Actually, I read this is being watched as a case study of what - happens when a state does everything wrong, or

[ In Reply To ..]
at least everything in a way that social scientists feel will be very counterproductive. Fascinating to them in a grim way.

This makes it sound like - a baby is a commodity

[ In Reply To ..]
and a detriment to the economy. Where is the sanctity of life?

Family planning is not just abortions - it is mostly birth control.

[ In Reply To ..]
Which helps prevent the necessity for abortion in the first place. States like Texas are cutting off their noses to spite their face when they cut funding for places like Planned Parenthood.

They would rather pay a single mother to feed her baby every day for 18 years than think that same woman is getting free birth control. I don't understand that thought process.

"necessity for abortion?" - Incredible.

[ In Reply To ..]
Speechless, here.

As to your second paragraph, I would agree with you if it were worded: "They would rather pay a single mother to feed her baby every day for 18 years than have that same woman kill her baby."
Well, you got the point, anyway. - my eyes just rolled back in my head.

NEJoM On Cutting Family Planning In TXOct 05, 2012
While I find it highly unfortunate that Texas has cut funding for family planning, it is a good opportunity to learn what the effects will be in the future.  This article was pretty interesting, by the New England Journal of Medicine. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1207920?query=featured_home&&& "In addition, as more women are steered toward contraceptive pills, they are being provided with fewer pill packs per visit, a practice that has been shown to result in lowe ...

Family Planning: Romney Pledged To Reinstate Bush's "global Gag Rule"Oct 20, 2012
that  provided information, advice, referrals or services for legal abortion or supported the legalization of abortion, even using its own money. Merely talking about abortion could cost groups not only federal money, but also useful technical support and American-donated supplies of contraceptives, including condoms for distribution in the communities they serve. The gag rule did nothing to prevent use of government financing for abortions because that was already illegal under federal l ...

Obamacare-"Family Glitch" Means No Help For My Child.Mar 26, 2014
WARNING - vent below!  After 2 miserably failed attempts to get my 19-year-old child coverage on healthcare.gov, I went to an insur. agent today. No subsidy for my daughter even though we fall under the income threshold for both the cost adjustment and the tax credit because: 1.  I have employer offered insurance (which is so BAD I will NOT put her on it). 2.  We are going to claim her on our taxes as a dependent as she is still a student. Need Ideas For A Family Reunion Family Tree Display Or Art Or????Nov 20, 2010
My grandma's side of the family has a biannual family reunion and it's a pretty big party.  Every reunion a different families "hosts" the reunion.  Hosting generally means they pick a location for everyone to gather, book the facility and caterers, send out the newsletter, and contact local motels and campgrounds for special group rates, etc.  Then of course their in charge of the events at the dinner like giving prizes for who traveled the farthest, the oldest, the you ...

Cutting ExpensesApr 21, 2010
I have been out of work for some time now and have had to really cut back.  I never bothered with the discount food stores in our area before, and never went into the Dollar Store for much of anything.  I am finding out what a blessing these stores can be.  I hope I can be of help to some of you.  Yesterday I bought a 2 lbs. bag of fresh whole carrots at a store Called Aldi in my area and paid $0.59 for the bag.  I used to pay $7.00 for mascara at a chain grocery store ...

The Obamas Are Planning To Buy A (sm)Sep 03, 2012
"modest" 35 million dollar home in Hawaii in January of 2013.  (I hope he can take up PERMANENT 24/7 residence on that date).  He always calls Hawaii "home" when he is vacationing on our dime, guess he doesn't want to call Chicago home - too many shootings within just blocks of his house there.  Who would want to vacay there anyway?  I'm glad they are buying something modest though, all the while demonizing Romney for having too much money - at least Romney ear ...

Comission Gives More Details On Cutting The DeficitNov 11, 2010
I have a feeling these suggestions won't go very far....especially the gas tax. If it isn't the people against some of the cuts, it will definitely be the federal employees against a wage freeze. I think the Congress will also be against their pet earmarks.  In my opinion, I think the federal employees could and should allow a wage freeze. The rest of America had to swallow it, why shouldn't they? As for earmarks, I think only the frivolous ones, like the ones stu ...

Some Interesting Articles On Cutting The Budget DeficitNov 28, 2010
All these articles are quite long but are worth reading every word. Remember, nothing is written in stone. All can be tweaked. I found some of the ideas very good, and some 'not so good.' All in all, it's good that there's plenty of input happening and hopefully, our government will READ (if that's possible) them and debate/compromise on them. The first one is from the Brookings Institute which gives quite a few plans from various Senior Fellows: http://www.brookings.e ...

CNN Says Brides Cannot Be Tacky In Planning Wedding ButOct 15, 2009
Watching a program this morning and a person asked about taking a gift to a wedding. These were people not really close and she was asking how would it be if she took an unsigned check, went to the wedding, checked it out INCLUDING what was being served at the reception and then slip into the ladies room and wrote out what she thought the wedding, I guess, was worth to her. Now, talking about tacky. This right now is high in my book. The hostess taking the question told her no. What involving we ...

Question For People Planning To VoteApr 10, 2012
Just a question as I am interesting in hearing the positives on both sides.  Without saying negatives about the side you don't support.  Can you give me a reason(s) why I should vote for Obama or why I should vote for Romney.  I don't want to hear negativity about the other candidate, already read enough.  And if possible don't try and make up things like Romney will try and convert everyone to Mormon or Obama will save the planet and covert everyone to muslim. ...

Hundreds of Al Qaeda militants are planning terror attacks from Yemen, the country's foreign minister said Tuesday. Get Ready, Obama Planning To Release 17 More Islamic Terrorist Dec 21, 2016
By law, the Pentagon must notify Congress 30 days before a prisoner transfer, a deadline that Obama made on Monday. In June, Obama made sure to release Abdel Malik Ahmed Abdel Wahab al-Rahabi, the bodyguard, 9/11 planner, and possible relative of Osama bin Laden, from Guantanamo Bay. In September, Obama's administration informed the American people that two more Islamic terrorists released from Guantanamo Bay returned to the battlefield to fight against the United States. What I See As ComingNov 04, 2016
Whether you like the author or the paper it is from, this story is what I fear is happening to our country. I have had a sick feeling for the last few months as the election gets more and more aggressive and I know that our country will not be better for it after it is all said and done - no matter who wins on Tuesday. Just read it through without thinking about who you support or why.  Try to recognize that our country is being torn apart from threats that are being made about what will ha ...

This Is What I See Coming For WisconsinMar 17, 2011
I have copied and pasted something someone wrote that pretty much sums up Scott (slime) Walker's intentions.   Diane Ravitch has it in a nutshell. Of Scott Walker, she writes: He expects that over time, most public workers will stop paying dues, especially now that they have to pay more for their healthcare and pension benefits. And thus will he cripple, perhaps permanently, a perennial political opponent. If Gov. Walker succeeds, there will be no organized voice to oppose hi ...
