Cutting expenses

Posted: Apr 21, 2010

I have been out of work for some time now and have had to really cut back.  I never bothered with the discount food stores in our area before, and never went into the Dollar Store for much of anything.  I am finding out what a blessing these stores can be.  I hope I can be of help to some of you.

Yesterday I bought a 2 lbs. bag of fresh whole carrots at a store Called Aldi in my area and paid $0.59 for the bag.  I used to pay $7.00 for mascara at a chain grocery store and now pay $1.00 at the Dollar Store.  It is somewhat smaller, but just as good.  There is an excellent all purpose cleaner at the Dollar Store called LA Awesome that is just that... AWESOME.  I use it on carpet (its intended purpose along with multiple uses), furniture fabric, to remove that black oily buildup from trucks that settles on my floors, etc.  In seconds it removes what used to take a lot of scrubbing.

I now buy deodorant at the Dollar Store which is the powder fresh scent.  I was buying Dove in the powder fresh scent before and paid 3x as much.

If you are not currently shopping in these stores I encourage you to check it out.  I buy sandwich bags (52 per box) for $1.00.  I buy the freezer bags in all sizes, storage containers, etc. all for $1.00.  I can't believe I wasn't smart shopping long ago.  I found shampoo that is thick and rich for $1.00.  (Had to try a few brands and now love this one!)

When I went to the dentist for my cleaning last week I was told I could use straight baking soda on my teeth to remove stains.  I used to buy brand name toothpaste with baking soda, but now buy Closeup toothpaste for $1.00 and after adding toothpaste to the brush dip it in baking soda.  It is a lot cheaper and you don't get the whitening agent that many contain, which was causing me sensitivity.

Hope I helped a little.  Check it out!  I know it's not rocket science, but speaking for myself . . . I am amazed at the savings.  It's trial and error.  If you don't like it you have only invested $1.00.  HAPPY SHOPPING!!!

cutting expenses - great ideas

Thank you for sharing those tips. I also love Aldi for certain items. You can save a lot of money on produce there.

I am also into couponing. I am fortunate to live near a major city where I can get a Sunday papers for $1. I follow a coupon blog and match coupons with store sales each week (building up my stock pile), and often paying under $1 or even just tax alone for many items at the grocery stores and drug stores. I save all coupons because you just never know when you might need one and can refer back to the insert. Family Dollar even takes manufacturer coupons in my area.

You can save so much money taking advantage of all these offers. All it takes is a little organization and planning!

I haven't tried the toothpaste with baking soda yet, but I just might give it a try. Thanks again.

You are so welcome! - Christine

Thank you for thanking me! The reason the baking soda is so important to me is that every time I go to a regular toothpaste the cleanings are much more difficult. I get a much fresher, cleaner feeling with baking soda. It grips the teeth better, and the dentist said it will not hurt your teeth or gums. I am just careful not to swallow any of it because it is so "salty." By the way . . the brand name toothpaste with baking soda is expensive. I paid $0.43 for the box of baking soda at our local grocery store! I also dip a very small dental brush in it and clean between my teeth to remove tea/coffee stains.

Thanks for telling us about the coupons! I have to admit.. I am lazy in that regard. You have encouraged me,friend!! Have a great day!

Dollar Store - LinK

Great tips. We go to the Dollar Store a lot too and have been for a while. Nothing wrong with that at all. I really helps save money on the little things that you would normally by in the expensive grocery or drug stores. To save money, I also go to our local thrift store to buy play clothes for my six year old (my 16 year old on the other hand would NEVER shop there - she has her standards to uphold LOL). She's very active and is always getting dirty outside when she plays. Doesn't make sense to pay full price for her to make a mess of them the first time she wears them.

take it easy on the baking soda for the teeth, though, - teeth

do not use it every time you brush your teeth, you might just scrub away and thin out all the tooth enamel with your stains, use it once a week only.

Better idea: After brushing your teeth rinse 2 minutes with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, once daily, it whitens and disinfects.

Name brands too at 99 Cents Only stores - Counting my pennies

I love the 99 Cents Only stores. Lots of name brands, plus a refrigerator section with eggs, creamer, name brand frozen dinners, salsa, etc. Best of all is the fresh produce and the packaged salad (Dole, Fresh Express).A large bag of potatoes for 99 cents? Seriously, how could anyone not give these stores a chance ?

99 cents - I have never heard of them

what states are these stores located in? I'm in GA.

99¢ only stores - my favorite

99¢ is my $30.00 store. I find so many good deals I have a hard time coming out of there for less than $30.00. :) I live in So. Calif.

Rainbow Grocery Outlets - RubySoho

I'm not sure if the above (Rainbow Grocery Outlets) is a central CA thing or nation-wide, but unbelievable deals on everything from pasta to bread to canned goods to (name-brand) frozen entrees, Lunchables and things like that. I've literally walked out of there with a cart full of food for less than $40. Oh, and GREAT deals on different kinds of sodas, too.

I wish we had it! - Christine

I never heard of Rainbow Grocery Outlets. I live in Pennsylvania, and I wish we had it here. I never heard of the 99 cents store mentioned below either. I know at Aldi the canned foods are much lower than at regular stores. I love green beans and used to buy Green Giant for $1.19 a can. At Aldi their green beans are 49 cents a can and I can't tell the difference. I am so thankful for the discount stores. I just couldn't make it now without them! I also just love the oatmeal and Molasses cookies at the Dollar Store!

Wonderful tips! Im going to the Dollar Store TODAY, - on your advice! Sounds GREAT! -NM

I was out of everything, and had a long grocery list today. Also, I had a very limited amount of money I could spend.

I started at our local dollar store called "Dollar Tree". There I made a big dent in the more expensive things on the list, especially household cleaning products. I saved about $50 there - my total was only $27.

With about half of my list checked off, my next stop was Walmart, where I was able to get everything else on my list, and even a few extras. (I love trail mix, but usually can't afford it. Same with pizzas.) Today I pretty much stuck to not buying anything that cost more than $2.50, and I saved about $30 -my total was around $83.00

The only thing left on the list is cat litter, and my cats only like the unscented kind. Often the supermarkets or Walmart don't even have it in stock, and it's expensive. Instead, I travel over the hill in the other direction, and to go Petco. There, you can buy those big plastic pails of their unscented clumping litter, and then keep bringing the pails back for even less-expensive refills. Petsmart seems to have more variety of other things, but Petco's got the LITTER! ;)

So, I'm very pleased to have avoided Safeway ENTIRELY, and come home with enough groceries to get me through almost 3 weeks!

So it's definitely worth it to drive a little bit more, spend a little bit more time by shopping at more than one store, and hit the Dollar or 99-Cent stores FIRST, and try to fill as much of your shopping list there.

So happy to hear this! - Christine

Our town just had a Dollar General store open up. - Sunshine State MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I guess I live in what is called the "boon-docks" because our town has absolutely nothing but a crappy itsy-bitsy convenience store where everything is overpriced.

However, they just opened up right smack in the middle of town a Dollar General Store. It's the big excitement around here.

Never really went into one before, don't know why. It is now one of my favorite stores to save money on everything, plus it's right up the street for this "boon-docker."

I'm a cost-cutting guru..here's some more ideas!! - xoxo

Our family went from 2-incomes down to 1 with a HUGE loss...then we had a baby so I HAD to find ways to save and stretch our dollars. Here's some of what I do...hope it will help/inspire more ppl to not waste.

My mantra is "reusable reusable reusable!" so I look for things/products we use regularly and then search online for alternatives. You'll be amazed at what is available!

I have not bought ANY paper products in I don't know how long! check out www.hyenacart.com and search for paper alternatives. I use cloth napkins (local Goodwill/consignment stores are great places to look for these), reusable sandwich wraps/mats, reusable cloth wrap (instead of seran wrap). If you can sew, even better. Make your own for a fraction of the cost. Stop giving companies your hard-earned money on products that are literally being thrown away!

Stop using chemicals on your underarms, and make your own deodorant! I've been using this recipe for years and LOVE it...and it works! I live in hot/humid NC so I assure you, this works. I can spend the day at the beach or working in the garden, and absolutely no underarm odor or anything. Mix equal parts cornstarch, baking soda, coconut oil (or whatever oils you have on hand although I experimented with everything and coconut was the best for consistency and texture). When mixed to creamy paste, add about 10-20 drops of tea tree oil and a few drops of whatever essential oil scent you like (vanilla is awesome; orange; lemon etc...) Mix up. To use it, simply use your finger to scoop out about a quarter size, mix with your fingers and wipe on your underarms. I use a baby food jar when making a batch. One jar will last me about 2 months.

Clean with homemade cleaners! Plenty of sites online with recipes for cleaning with vinegar, baking soda, EOs. Stop polluting your home with toxic fumes and products.

buy a reusable coffee filter.

pack lunches in your reusable cloth lunch sack/bag. Use stainless steel instead of plastic, may require a slight investment but SS will literally last a lifetime if properly taken care of.

Shop your dollar stores, also check out the discount aisle in your local Big Lots. Yesterday I scored about 10 large tubes of Kiss My Face organic toothpaste (regularly marked $6.99) for 0.33 cents each!!!

Instead of using expensive body lotions, I buy plain organic oils (sesame, coconut, even plain old olive oil) and mix some EOs in it and use after showers. Keeps skin moisturized and looking great without harsh/toxic/pore clogging artificial/synthetic chemicals.

We sold our gas-guzzler car and bought an older diesel Volkswagon Jetta, and get this, now get about 668 miles to a tank of gas. Its been averaging about $33 to fill it too so what a HUGE savings there! It was costing that about every week and half...now I fill up once every 3-4 weeks.

Can't say enough great things about the bargains in your local consignment/Good Will/Salvation Army.

We cloth diapered our baby...you absolutely can not beat the cost savings to a couple dozen prefold diapers and covers to the expense of plastic, chemically-laden diapers. When I was pregnant and estimating the cost of diapers, I HAD to find an alternative. CD'ing was the best thing I ever did, next to breastfeeding (and not to mention the cost of formula!!) I estimate that my investment in my cloth diapers was about $175, and after I was done using all of them, sold the lot for $150. Not bad!

Talking about cloth diapers, they are AWESOME for so much more around the house...esp. cleaning glass! Get the preemie sized diapers for cleaning. They are perfect size.
www.greenmountaindiapers.com is the go-to site to learn about prefold diapers.

www.vitacost.com is great site too to shop for products, shipping is only $4.99 regardless of order. They do have the best/cheapest prices. I buy all my organic oils, EOs, Dr. Bronner's soap here.

Speaking of Dr. Bronner's...get their gallon sized soap at www.vitacost.com and use it for just about EVERYTHING! Its organic, chemical-free. Last forever. I stopped buying bar soap and we just use this. A gallon will last us (house of 3) about 5 months. I use it for cleaning and showering. I know you can get a recipe for the laundry but I haven't done this yet.

Get the foaming soap pumps for every sink in your house. Just fill it with about a 1/3 with the Dr. Bronners, and rest with water. So much cheaper then buying expensive liquid soap. May have to experiment with the soap/water ratio so that you don't clog the dispenser though.

Laundry soap...make your own too! http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2007/03/15/how-to-make-your-own-laundry-detergent-and-save-big-money/
Google homemade laundry soap for other recipes.

Okay, that's all I can think of for now! Hope this info helps.

Reducing Expenses--Home And Auto InsuranceSep 22, 2011
Having had to take some pay cuts, I am looking at every expense I have to try and make ends meet.  In looking at my home and auto insurance, I took a look at Progressive on-line and it looks like we could save a little.  My hubby has had our insurance through the same company forever.  How do you compare the quality of insurance other than the price?  What's the good, bad, and/or ugly?  TIA. ...

Comission Gives More Details On Cutting The DeficitNov 11, 2010
I have a feeling these suggestions won't go very far....especially the gas tax. If it isn't the people against some of the cuts, it will definitely be the federal employees against a wage freeze. I think the Congress will also be against their pet earmarks.  In my opinion, I think the federal employees could and should allow a wage freeze. The rest of America had to swallow it, why shouldn't they? As for earmarks, I think only the frivolous ones, like the ones stu ...

All these articles are quite long but are worth reading every word. Remember, nothing is written in stone. All can be tweaked. I found some of the ideas very good, and some 'not so good.' All in all, it's good that there's plenty of input happening and hopefully, our government will READ (if that's possible) them and debate/compromise on them. I Guess No One Saw This Coming--Cutting Family Planning MeansMar 03, 2013
"Using taxpayer dollars to finance family-planning services has become politically thorny in Texas, largely because of Republican lawmakers’ assertions that the women’s health clinics providing that care are affiliated with abortion providers. In the fiscal crunch of 2011, the Legislature cut the state’s family-planning budget by two-thirds, with some lawmakers claiming that they were defunding the “abortion industry.” Researchers at the University of Texas at ...
