I was watching a show about presidents this past weekend and found this bit of trivia pretty interesting - thought I'd share.
Hail to the Chief was from a play by James Sanderson based on a poem called "The Lady of the Lake," which was written by Sir Walter Scott. Sanderson used the music from an old Scottish song called "The Boat Song" to put the words to.
While the song was played for many presidents for special events, it was used for every formal gathering during the presidency of James Madison - his wife Dolly requested that it be played because James Madison was so short (5 feet 4 inches) that she was afraid no one would know of his arrival if music wasn't played.
Hail to the Chief wasn't played at all during the presidency of Chester Arthur because he didn't like the song and actually asked bandleaders to write a different song ("Presidential Polonaise"), but obvoiulsy that never took off.
In 1954, the Department of Defense made Hail to the Chief the official tune to announce the arrival of the US President for any official gathering - which pretty much covers everything.
Below are the words to Hail to the Chief - to be honest, I never knew there were real words; thought it was only music :)
Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the Chief! We salute him one and all.
Hail to the Chief as we pledge cooperation
In proud fulfillment of a grea, nobel call.
Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, that's our strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one we selected as commander.
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!
Anyone else have any neat presidential trivia to share?
