Nothing he is saying now is inconsistent with his initial remarks on the matter:

“We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized,” he said during a press conference last year. “That would change my calculus. That would change my equation.”

He didn't say "they cross this line and I'm going to bomb them." He said the use of chemical weapons would change the equation. That's what's happening right now.

In addition to the past US presidents who drew this same red line, I'd be more than happy to help you learn more about the 189 (out of 194) other member countries who have signed onto the chemical weapons ban....the one the president was talking about when he completed the sentence you chopped in half and misquoted before you posted. The whole statement was, "I didn't set the red line; the world set the red line."

"The red line was drawn by Calvin Coolidge in 1925 when the US signed onto the Geneva Protocol, though it took another 50 years to fully ratify. It addressed the use of chemical weapons, but not the production, development or storage.

It was drawn again by Richard Nixon in 1972 when the US signed onto the Biological Weapons Convention, which was a supplement to the 1925 protocol that did address possession and development. In fact, as I recall, these disarmament measures had been ongoing throughout the Cold War years.

It was drawn again by Gerald Ford in 1975 when GP ratification was accomplished and the US signatory status was entered into the depository.

It was drawn again by HW Bush on Jan 13, 1993 when the US signed onto the Chemical Weapons Convention. This addressed the use, development, production, storage and destruction of CWs.

It was drawn again by Bill Clinton in 1999 with his executive orders implementing the CWC.

It was drawn again by GW Bush in 2003 when he signed the Syria Accountability Act into law which specifically addressed the CW issue as it relates to Syria, among other things.

That's 5 out of 6 GOP former presidents. Where was all the outrage then when these measures were taken? When did we decide that the US doesn't have to enforce its own laws or live up to our own principles? Have we withdrawn from any of these treaties? This is not about a singular statement the current president echoed from presidents past. It's about maintaining well-established United States and international community norms."

Obama was playing cards the night of the Benghazi attack before heading to bed. Let's face it folks,Obama is trying to divert attention from the fact that the Benghazi scandal is still being covered up as the first year anniversary approaches next week. The fact that no other country will back us on the military strikes in Syria just makes us look like fools. As far as I'm concerned, we need to worry about our own country and nobody else's. Like the jobs, keep the money in the US. Those crazy people across the continent have been fighting and killing each other for years - there will NEVER be democracy there. You learn what you live or live what you learn. That's my 2 cents on the situation.

Maybe an effort to distance himself from the "bad" cops. Maybe helps Ferguson in their civil rights law suit. And, IMO, (and only my opinion) they might just indict Darren Wilson after all.
