Anyone here have experience with someone monitoring their bank and phone records?

Posted: Jul 11, 2015

There is someone around me who I believe gains access to my bank and phone records.  I have no proof, only my instincts which I do trust.  What I want to know is this:  Is there a way to only give out a masked phone number when I apply for jobs and do business with places?  One that cannot be breached by someone calling and pretending to be me or otherwise convincing someone to give the information?  In other words, a service like this that does not store my info, so there would be no info to share if such a person contacted them?

;

That's one of the things I hate about online job - applications. Too much sensitive - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
sensitive personal information is asked for in *required* fields. I think job applicants should always have the option of printing out an application form, filling it out by hand, and mailing it, if the desire.

What I REALLY hate is when the company you want to apply for a job with is local, and if you make the effort to go there in person and ask for a form to fill out, they tell you no. If someone is earnest enough about a job to go in person, and not bother anyone other than simply requesting HR to hand them a form, you'd think that would be considered a "plus". But nope, not in today's screwed-up business world.

Online Applications - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
The worst is when they ask for your SS# (required field) on the online application. I applied to a local place online, and when I saw they wanted my SS#, I called on the phone and asked if I could just come in and fill out a paper application. They said, "no," that it must be done online. I refused to apply.

If I'm doing a paper application, I write in the field, "will supply at time of job offer." I don't want a piece of paper floating around in some office with my SS# on it, either, if I'm not even necessarily going to be working there.

NOBODY needs an SS# until you are physically working there.

I think you need to consider something else first. - sm

That is how this "accessing" is harming you. If they are accessing your bank records, how are they doing it? What are they doing it for? Why? Do they use the information? How?

How does your phone number fit in with this? How and why are they "monitoring" your phone records? To what end?

You don't seem concerned about posting here. What is the difference?

I am not sure what you think employment applications have to do with either your bank account or your phone.

I can tell you this, though. There is no way to give out a "masked number," and if you explain the bit about someone monitoring your phone and bank records, no employer is going to hire you. There are two reasons for that. First, no one wants to become embroiled in that kind of conflict. Second, the story sounds frankly paranoid and delusional. You may be perfectly sane and someone might actually be monitoring your bank, your phone, and the output of your sewer system, but no one will understand why or believe it.

So, if you want a job, just apply in the normal manner and do not mention any of this.

If you think your banking information is compromised, get a new bank account. Tell them you suspect person X of snooping. Establish online access with a secure, strong password so that you will know if anyone accesses it.

Get a new phone number if you want, but I cannot see what the issue is with that. Phone numbers are not secret. If you are doing any shady business by phone, just stop and it won't matter who knows.

Just FYI, my mother believed the same thing for 50 years. When the suspect individual died, she simply switched to another. It went from her husband to her stepson to the woman at the husband's hearing aid store to her children to her neighbor and on and on. At the same time, she was monitoring her husband and the hearing aid woman by sitting outside their employment and in the shop lot. Two of my employers, several neighbors, and boyfriends reported that she had been calling asking THEM to monitor me because she lived too far away to do it herself, and she closed out two of my bank accounts. A third bank called me to report that she was trying to write a counter check but "my" signature did not match. (The bank stopped that by putting a restriction on my account.)

I am very sorry about your Mom's situation, but - Cass

there really are nutty people out there, like ex-boyfriends, etc., who will try to get access to this information just so they will know what you are up to, because they have a serious obsession problem. Whether or not anything harmful is actually done with the information, it is still unnerving when someone tells me stuff about myself that he should have no way of knowing. I would not be so quick to discount another person's feelings that are similar to your mom's. It really does happen.

as much as you can and file a complaint with the police department. This sounds like a stalking situation, which is illegal. Also, get your bank account numbers changed and use an extra strong password that you do not write down anywhere. Keep your debit and credit cards under lock and key unless you need to go out to use them. If you have an ex-boyfriend with an obsession problem, make sure that you also report that in your police complaint. Also set up your computer so that only you can turn it on with a password. Stay off social networking sites, etc. Good luck

Stalking is exactly what it is.

I did not discount your experiences. - sm

Please read what I said again without jumping to conclusions. I did not discount what you described. I actually told you I had been victimized much the same way. I also gave you suggestions for protecting your bank account, and explained why you do not want any employer to know about this.

You were very vague in your first post. You never said that the boyfriend told you about things he should not know. That is why you sounded paranoid.
I don't need to read it again. - Cass
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't need the sarcasm, for example your sewer system comment. I did not claim anyone was interested in my sewage. That would be absurd, right? Yes, I was vague, but why did you need to know details? I asked for very specific information - a way to not have to give out my real number while still being able to conduct business I need to conduct. If you have no helpful information or are unwilling to share it, I wonder why you replied at all.
Your "real number" is not secret. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Your phone number is not secret. It is available through the phone directory.

You want to conduct business with people who need your phone number without giving them your phone number. Fine, but even if there was a way, your need to use it would defeat the purpose by tipping off the employer that you are a potential problem employee. No matter what the underlying reason is, it sounds like bad news to them ... high-conflict, paranoid employee, stalking ex-boyfriend or husband, continuous personnel issues at best or workplace violence at worst.

By not giving us enough specifics, you limited our ability to provide appropriate advice.

I think that I did give you helpful information. You just didn't like it.

Maybe the OP has ... sm - Me

an unpublished number. I do. You seem to be making a lot of assumptions. I did not see anywhere in the OP's post that he/she has ever or planned to mention this to a potential employer. I also do not see anywhere in the OP's post asking for advice, just one specific thing: Do you know about a product like this.

OP, I have seen some cell phone apps that provide what they call a "burner" number, which might help you. I am not familiar with them though to know if that is what you are looking for. Good luck.
Yes, she did. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
This is from her original post: "Is there a way to only give out a masked phone number when I apply for jobs and do business with places?"

If you give a potential employer a "masked number" they are absolutely not going to hire you. You don't even have to tell them. They will figure it out doing a background check.

This is paranoia, if you did not know. Maybe it is somewhat justified or maybe it is delusional, but it is paranoia. Employers do know the signs and won't hire you. Then, these people blame having been an MT on why no one will hire them, when it is their own worrisome behavior that causes it. If you are paranoid or have personal problems, keep your mouth shut about it when you are applying for jobs.

As for your unpublished number, it is not secret. It is just unpublished. It is available to others in several ways.

I still don't see it your way... - Me
[ In Reply To ..]
Asking if such a product exists is not asking for advice on whether or not he/she should use it. I posted to the OP about the burner app. A friend of mine uses such an app when selling stuff on craigslist to avoid having to give out his personal home or cell phone number. There is no way the buyer knows it is a burner number, and he does not need to tell them, "this is a fake number because I am paranoid about what may or may not happen if I give you my real one." It is just a phone number that works just like any other but he can disable it if need be and get a new one. I am not sure exactly how it works, but it does, and since such a product exists, clearly there is a market for it.

As for your comment about people being able to find out a nonpublished number, that implies that, as the OP suspects, there are wackos in the world who will try to find your information despite your best efforts to maintain privacy. It must not be as looney (spelling?) as you seem to want to make it out to be.
Again, your phone number IS NOT SECRET - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Your phone number is just unpublished, not "secret." Yes, lots of people want to know what it is, from telemarketers to politicians to stalkers to old friends to the fire department and the police. They can find it, too, and they do not need to chase around after employers to get them to divulge it. They do not need to because there are loads of easier ways to find it.

Unlessess you are a politician, a spy, or a criminal, it is unlikely that anyone is "accessing your phone records." What would be there to interest anyone? The belief that there is, or that vague, unspecified people are doing this to somehow harm you is delusional.

Two hundred years ago, this delusion of persecution took the form of evil spirits. In the mid-20th century, it became radio waves necessitating tinfoil hats. Now it is people who "access phone records" and secret societies that target people on the instructions of "Big Pharma."

It is mental illness. Absolutely nothing can be done to convince the sufferer that none of it is happening. That is how delusions work. Even the attempt to convince them otherwise is seen as part of the conspiracy against them.

Take action - Backwoods Typist

[ In Reply To ..]

Even though your post sounds a bit paranoid, if you seriously suspect what you describe, then start taking action and stop sitting on your hands.  Your private information is compromised and who knows what kind of damage can be done.

Call your banking institution and have your account changed and have them institute a password that ONLY YOU would know.  This would prevent anybody from walking in and messing with your financials.  Also, if you do banking online, change your username and password.

Also, change your username and password on your account with the phone company.  Call them and ask them to institute a password like you did with the bank, again something ONLY YOU would know.

Make sure you are not throwing old bills or statements in the regular trash.  If you haven't already, invest in a good paper shredder or take your frustrations out on your bills and tear them into confetti.  The smaller the pieces are, the better.

Make sure to run virus scans on your computer.  Download and install Malwarebytes.  There is a free version as well as a paid version.  You can check local computer shops to see what they would charge for a lifetime license.  Sometimes they can get a better deal since they buy in bulk.  As much as we work with personal info, worth the investment.  Run a full scan with Malwarebytes, clear out whatever nasties it finds, and restart your computer.  Also use a program called Trojan Remover.  This program can find deeply hidden trojans.  Follow prompts and restart the computer.  Also download and install CC cleaner and use it to clean your registry.  Fix whatever it finds and restart your computer.

A few common sense things to mention:  Password protect your computer.  You can do this through the control panel.  Go to System and Security, then Power Options.  Make sure ONLY YOU have the password for your computer.  Lock your computer screen or turn off the computer when not in use.  Not only does this save you electricity by turning in off, it also keeps prying eyes out of your computer.  You can use the Windows key plus L to lock, then press the same combination again, enter your password and you are back on.  Supervise any young children or others that use your computer.  Also, no sticky notes with passwords/usernames on them on the monitor.  If you have to write them down, that is fine but keep it under lock and key and destroy as soon as you do not need it by tearing it into confetti, burning, or putting through the paper shredder.

I hope what you mention is not true, but the above should help.  Good luck.

That is all paranoid, conspiracy-theory nonsense, like lizard people, men in black, and the belief that the government monitors you through your toaster.

The problem with it is that people who believe it also define anyone who says otherwise (like me) as being part of the conspiracy.

Use a virtual phone number - sm

Use a call forwarding service to hide your real number:-

http://www.virtualphoneline.com/

Change bank account and before doing that reformat your PC and use a paid version of some good anti-virus software that would prevent any key loggers/phishing ware on your computer.

Also, burn or shred your bills. Don't use the regular trash.
