Generic Republican Candidate 46%, Obama 42%

Posted: Jun 29, 2011

Good to know that a GENERIC Republican is ahead in the polls to Barry.  How did the Campaingner-in-Chief do in Iowa? Gee, it's not like he's got anything better to do. The good news is that while he's on the campaign trail he's not destroying and embarrassing this country.

Election 2012: Generic Presidential Ballot
Generic Republican Candidate 46%, Obama 42%

A generic Republican candidate now holds a four-point lead over President Obama in a hypothetical 2012 election matchup.  It's the fifth week in a row that the GOP candidate has been ahead and the widest gap between the candidates to date.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds a generic Republican candidate earns support from 46% of Likely U.S. Voters, while the president picks up 42% of the vote.  Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and nine percent (9%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Last week, the Republican held a 45% to 43% advantage. In weekly surveys since the beginning of May, support for Obama has ranged from 42% to 45%, while the Republican has earned 43% to 46% of the vote. Rasmussen Reports will provide new data on this generic matchup each week until the field of prospective Republican nominees narrows to a few serious contenders.

Republicans also hold a seven-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, June 26. Republicans have led on this ballot every week since June 2009.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook

The survey of 3,500 Likely Voters was conducted on June 20-26, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney continues to lead the race for the Republican nomination, but Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann has surged into second place following the June 13 GOP debate.

In every matchup tested so far this year against named GOP challengers, the president’s support has stayed between 42% and 49%. An incumbent who earns support below 50% is generally considered politically vulnerable. The president’s total job approval ratings are a good indicator of what percentage of the vote he may earn in the 2012 presidential race.  Aside from a brief bounce in support following the killing of Osama bin Laden, Obama’s approval ratings have hovered in the high 40s for the past 18 months.

Eighty-four percent (84%) of GOP voters support a generic candidate from their party, while almost as many Democrats (81%) favor Obama. Voters not affiliated with either political party prefer the Republican 42% to 37%.

Male voters prefer the Republican by 12 points; female voters give a three-point edge to Obama. Voters under the age of 30 favor the incumbent, while middle-aged voters are evenly divided. Voters over 50 support the Republican.

Ninety-five percent (95%) of black voters favor Obama, while 53% of whites support the Republican. Voters of other races are evenly divided.

Conservatives (79%) overwhelmingly support the Republican, while 81% of liberals - and a plurality (49%) of moderates - favor Obama.

Seventy-nine percent (79%) of the Political Class back the president, but 54% of Mainstream voters like the Republican instead.

Voters are more willing than ever to elect a woman president, and most think there’s a good chance a woman will win the White House in the next 10 years.

Nearly half of U.S. voters give Obama poor marks for his handling of the economy, but he continues to earn higher respect for his performance in the area of national security. Almost as many (44%) give him positive marks on his leadership, though.

Most voters still want to repeal the national health care law, and confidence that the law will improve the quality of health care has fallen to a new low.

Only problem with this is a generic republican - cannot run for president

[ In Reply To ..]
and once you put a face and name into the mix (any of those currently in the GOP candidate pool) and ask the same question, lo and behold, we get considerably different responses, except perhaps in the notoriously right leaning Rasmussen studies.

PS: The closet contender who has any prayer of coming close to Obama is the very same one the tea party and right-wingers are rejecting hand over fist. Go figure.

I would take any of them over Obama at this point. - NOTHING is improving.nm

nm

Of course you would, nm. We are well acquainted with - your hatred for the president.

[ In Reply To ..]
What's your idea for improvement? Please give us some specifics on your plan - not another trite Obama bash, but a real live plan - to fix what ails us. We are quivering with unbridled excitement to gain your deep insight into how you would solve our country's problems.
Oh, would you please stop. Enough with that already - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I am sick to death of people coming on here and if you don't agree with policies or if you don't want to lose your job or see how the economy is suffering someone has the bleeping audacity to say "oh you hate him". You know what....no where in her/his message is there any sign of "hate". I and many others are sick and tired of that fear tactic. It ain't gonna work anymore. Nobody bashed Obama.

This was so not called for and hence it could be put back on you. Do you have any ideas on how to solve our country's problem. That is besides calling other people racist or haters because they don't drool all over your lord.

Have the people in our country gone so low as to be so rude to other people because they don't know who they are. Guaranteed you would not have the nerve to say half this stuff in person.

So, what's up with the "unbridled excitement to gain your deep insight into how you would solve our country's problems". What do you really expect in return? That was so uncalled for. Nobody has the answers to solve our countries problems. Not here. However, the people we elect should have those answers. Unfortunately yours truly doesn't even have them. The economy was bad when Bush left and now it's worse. Oh yeah...p.s. that is not Bush's fault (he has been gone for 3 years now you do realize). P.P.S. That is not hatred or racism either. Get it?

There are many people with ideas. The ones I have heard with good ideas have dropped out of the race, which is a shame. I don't like any of the candidates so far from any of the parties.

All I hope for is this next election we end up with a candidate who cares about the country, the people, the economy, and getting jobs back here. Last person who was like that was Kennedy. Since then it's just gotten worse and each candidate is worse than the last.
Ahem. A quick review of .nm's contributions - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
over the past months shows that hatred for Obama, negativity and gloom and doom is all she's got. This is her MO. It is her right, just as it is mine to point it out.
Ahem. Multiple people use the same moniker - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
That has been pointed out over and over again. I have even used the same moniker of other posters. nm means no message. sm means see message. Sometimes when you are just adding a thought but there is no need for a message you write nm. It is not specific for just one person. Also, I'm reading all the messages with nm and no where in there is any message that shows any "hate" for Obama. But maybe you can just see into their soul and just know this telepathically(wait let me get my tin hat out :-) I see disagreement with policies and issues. I see people writing they are dissatisfied with the way the country is headed, but NO WHERE is there anything that even remotely is close to your accusations of "hate". This is her MO? Really? You know all these people personally? I think its a very odd statement to say "it's my right to point it out". I personally don't understand why anyone would say something like "it's my right to point it out". And that's a good thing I don't. Too creepy to understand the mind of those who think something like that it's okay.
The moniker is not what identifies her - It's the
[ In Reply To ..]
attitude and repetitive buzz words and catch phrases she uses all the time, couched in the unmistakable trademark drive-by format that ends with a .nm. The dot is the period at the end of the statement and she leaves the space out before attaching the nm. She never fails to disappoint those looking for vapid hit-and-run slams expressing sentiments that are never backed up with a reference and are typically void of fact. Transparent as celllophane.
No it's not - you are once again assuming - I've also done that - it's not a tradema
[ In Reply To ..]
Lots of people do that. Just because I see many messages I don't agree with I don't assume its the same person.

People should really stick to topics at hand instead of attacking other posters and trying to get other to attack/gang up on them because they don't like what a poster(s) wrote. Nobody here has a "trademark". We all use nm, NM, .nm., -nm, sm, SM, see message, - see message, etc, etc

Also sometimes a post does not need a long explanation. Sometimes just one sentence conveys the posters thoughts about a topic being talked about.
The difference between her and the others you - described
[ In Reply To ..]
is the driveby format, attitude, buzz words, catch phrases and predictable lack of discussion or source citations. Those elements function much the same as a person's face does when it comes to identity. No assumptions needed.

Trying to wrap my head around someone who is a - Obama hater, Kennedy lover? sm
[ In Reply To ..]
"All I hope for is this next election we end up with a candidate who cares about the country, the people, the economy, and getting jobs back here. Last person who was like that was Kennedy. Since then it's just gotten worse and each candidate is worse than the last."

If I remember correctly, jobs and the economy were not an issue back in the Kennedy era. Eisenhower had already raised taxes on the wealthy to pay for wars in progress, as had Roosevelt during WWII, and unemployment was low.

We now are involved in several conflicts around the world, have high unemployment, and reduction of taxes on the most wealthy, big corporations and the Wallstreet/banking community who are all stockpiling their current earnings instead of spending and creating jobs.

I still cannot figure out the track one would follow in life where they remain a Kennedy follower and now an Obama hater?
I like your post - very good points - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with your post. The only thing is at the end I wasn't sure if you are saying the poster that I replied to accused someone of being an Obama hater. I read all the posts and no where did I see anything that would lead anyone to believe someone was an Obama hater. On this board I read messages of dissatisfaction with policies, or they don't agree with certain issues. Then someone has the nerve to come on and call them an "Obama hater". I just don't get that. It's very childish when you can't argue with facts you (not you personally, just figuratively) call someone a hater. I think it's childish and it disrupts the flow of conversation.

I think Kennedy was a very different person than Obama. I was too young know everything he did in office, but I understand he was a good leader and did what he felt was in the best interest of the country. Many people liked him and my opinion is that he was the last "real" president the country had. But the democrats of today are not the same as the ones in the Kennedy era. Politics has changed and so have the democrats and republicans. There is a fine line between socialism and democrats (and no I'm not calling every democrat a socialist, as I would most likely fall into that category), however, a there is a very close similarity.

So, as for your last statement it is very understandable how someone could remain a Kennedy follower and now an Obama hater because they are two totally different people with different ideologies. Although I still stand by my statement that I don't find any posts on this board that even sound close to someone being an "Obama hater".
How bout a leader who unites instead of divides, and - does not spend money we dont have.
[ In Reply To ..]
Obama is the most clueless president we could have asked for, and for those who can STILL not realize it, well, the blindness and ignorance is astounding and sad. Our country will continue to suffer further unless we vote him out. We need a president who has actually run something before becoming leader of the free world ! Common sense would really help you out here. Its obviously lacking in so many of our citizens.
A plan identifies problems, sets goals and proposes - specific measures to use
[ In Reply To ..]
to meet the goals. This is not a plan. It is another trivial and trite collection of buzz words and catch phrases.
Aren't you just so tired of nm doing the driveby - and then see message doing a rant?
[ In Reply To ..]
Reminds me of a bully team I once knew. The skinny little guy would be very obnoxious until someone would call him on it; then his buddy, the big wrestler, would come out and beat up the good guy. One day the bully team got their just reward and everyone else was happy. I think everyone sees through this nm bait/see message combo.
No I'm not - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
This message itself sounds like a bully team trying to get other posters to gang up.

Do you realize nm means no message. I myself have used it but not lately and I don't know what posts you are talking about because I've read all the ones with nm and don't see any driveby's. Just someone stating their opinion about a topic but does not have a need to write a book report about it.

sm is also another common one used and I have used that too because. It means see message and a lot of people use that too.

If people don't like a message or what they perceive to be a "drive by" why not just ignore the message rather than create a bully message trying to bully other posters because they don't like what they said.

Everyone is entitled to post whatever they want whether it's just one sentence or longer. Sometimes one sentence is all that is needed about a topic.

This is what happens - Beethoven
