Firefighters Watch As Home Burns

Posted: Oct 6, 2010

Have people gone absolutely crazy? I can't believe any human being could stand by and watch someone's house burn down with their animals inside when they have the capability to put it out. They could have collected the $75 later. Unbelievable.

A smoldering rage may be all that remains after Gene Cranick's home burned to the ground last week in Obion County, Tennessee.

Firefighters are usually the bold "veni, vidi, vici" sort, but those from neighboring South Fulton could only say "veni, vidi." They came. They watched. That's it.

Cranick lives outside of the city limits and he admits that he forgot to pay a $75 annual service fee that would have provided him with fire protection. Firefighters wouldn't lift a finger, much less the hoses that might have saved the house.

The fire reportedly started in some barrels outside. As the flames crept closer to the home, Cranick says he offered to pay whatever it would take. The plea fell on deaf ears. Hours later, the home was gone.

So were three dogs and a cat.

"They coulda' been saved if they put water on it. But they didn't do it," Cranick told MSNBC.

The South Fulton firefighters did show up and managed to save a neighbor's field. The neighbor had paid the fee. But they would provide no heroics for the Cranicks. A local news report shows them climbing back on their trucks, flames still dancing over what was once the family's home.

The event was dubbed "pay for spray" by MSNBC host Keith Olbermann. It's a chilling vision of what could play out in a third world America, where paying taxes isn't enough to cover basic services. Fire protection, it turns out, is a privilege in some communities. On Monday's show, Olbermann railed against the larger implications the incident, calling it "a look now into the America envisioned by the tea party ... just a preview of what would come in a kind of a la carte government."

Think Progress was equally incensed:

As ThinkProgress has noted, there are currently two competing visions of governance in the United States. One, the conservative vision, believes in the on-your-own society, and informs a policy agenda that primarily serves the well off and privileged sectors of the country. The other vision, the progressive one, believes in an American Dream that works for all people, regardless of their racial, religious, or economic background.

The conservative vision was on full display last week in Obion County, Tennessee.

Cranick's wife, Paulette, doesn't blame the firefighters. "They're doing what they are told to do. It's not their fault," she told WPSD.

South Fulton Mayor David Crocker didn't exude compassion when interviewed for the same report, comparing the service to an insurance policy. "Anybody that's not in the city of South Fulton, it's a service we offer, either they accept it or they don't."

A family in Tennessee didn't accept. They lost their home over a $75 fee.

Some people will link anything just to smear. I am frankly sick to death of it. We will never be united as a country again if we continue this lousy attitude.
Makes perfect sense to me. Tea party mentality - is alive and well in Obion Cty TN..
[ In Reply To ..]
Perception is everything. Are you seriously defending the tea party in one breath and lecturing your opposition on smear tactics, lousy attitudes and UNITY, of all things? Really?
You know nothing about the Tea Party. So please - stop TRYING to reveal your amazing
[ In Reply To ..]
intellect and perception. The snobbery and elitism is backfiring all over the country. Pay attention once in a while. In the end, common sense is finally going to prevail. Get back to me in November. ;-)
You know nothing about me, so the rest of your post - is
[ In Reply To ..]
disposable. A couple of worn-out buzz words, posturing, a declaration of exclusive claim to common sense and a terse command amounts to zilch in terms of intellect and perception. Raw nerves by my read.
Oh please. You do the same ole boring slams of - the Tea Party, yet its obvious

you dont have a clue of what they represent, only what your lefties full of real "hate" want to label them. So, if you cant take the heat from me, get out of the kitchen. Thanks
You seem a bit disoriented. - Let me help.

I used YOUR words, turned them around and aimed them right back atcha. No mention of the party was made by me in the post you replied to. I simply made the observation that your reply was void of intellect and perception by recanting its contents.

By all measures, you are the only one here putting out all the hot air. After all, you said it yourself, huh? I am the distant observer, sitting over here all cool, calm and collected. Next.

what party you belong to. You are not fooling anyone, and contrary to your own belief about yourself, you certainly are not a know-it-all.
I suppose you are right about my party affiliation, - which I make no attempt to hide, but
[ In Reply To ..]
I have a question. What would I have to gain by trying to fool anyone? I put my views out, you put yours, then others read them and react accordingly. That's the name of the game.

Must I remind you? You know absolutely nothing about me and certainly can only speculate about what I believe about myself. On the other hand, one thing about you remains quite obvious. You have nothing more to offer in terms of arguing the subject at hand, which is the logical extrapolation of perceptions about the tea party (who cannot even articulate its own policies, preferring to be regarded as some vaguely conceived grass roots movement). It is not a stretch to associate their government ala carte approach with the behaviors in Obion County TN that allowed a $75 fee to prevent the fire department from saving that man's home and the animals trapped inside who perished in the blaze.

So far, all you have been able to come up with is a couple of unfounded pronouncements and volleys of personal insults. Forgive me if I remain totally unconvinced by your efforts.

How in the world can you link - Seriously!?

what happened to this man and his wife to the Tea Party? Some of you people are so unbelievable. I suppose the dry weather conditions in my state are the Tea Party's fault too, huh? Oh my...I think I have gas this morning...must be the Tea Party's fault. Obama made a stupid decision today...I'm sure that is either Bush's fault or the Tea Party's fault.

Another blind Obama lemming posting stupid crap!

Lose the tude (and all of its emotional trappings) and dig deeper into the text of the article. Engage your frontal lobe to mediate those emotional messages seated deep inside the more primitive center of your brain and place focus on the logic that is screaming for attention. Commence research on such concepts as ala carte and laissez faire government as they are advocated by the tea party, then do what scientists do.

Propose a theory using the Obion County incident as a test model for government on behalf of ther monied privileged, seated in a disdainful hostility toward and open warfare on the poor...you know, that survival-of-the-fittest approach (based on Darwinian theory of evolution (gasp), dog-eat-dog, boot-strap mindset (sound familiar?). Gather empirical evidence and see if your test model jives with the known given (thesis) of tea party government policy statements.

The subsequent conclusion will be an inescapable no-brainer.

They are desperate. THATS how...arent they sad? - Pity them, pity them. nm

that denial this deep and partisan stances this detached from reality often end up making folks the butt of their own jokes. What is not the least bit laughable is the needless loss of a home and cherished pets over a $75 fee people were begging to pay on the owner's behalf.

BTW, any comment on all the calls from potential contributors that started coming in to help the guy out once MSNBC aired KO's report? Latest word is that Cranick is unsure whether or not he will accept the help, but people, including incredulous firefighters, keep on trying anyway. Bet that gives you a case of the bah-humbugs bigtime!
Denial is on your side thinking our country is headed - TX

Notice the first post. Notice how not one single person has approached the subject. This is why the post is void of substance. No one can come up with any argument to dispute the fact that this claim is bogus through and through. Hence the personal attacks, dodges and slams. It was A-okay to let the guy's house burn. He didn't pay.

The guy had his pets in there and the firefighters let 'em burn to death.

While this is a sad unfortunate event, the guy knew - he had to pay for the svc and didnt'

[ In Reply To ..]
It is so sad. Every year you see where people have died from heat or from freezing in their own home. If they are without heating or cooling because of failure to pay their bill, is that also the tea party's fault?

I still do not see the link to the tea party. Quite confusing. I hope he remembered his homeowners insurance. I hear you have to pay for that too before it pays.

The man didn't have a license for the assault rifle, as he spent time in prison for killing his grandmother. I know banning assault rifles won't immediately solve anything. There are already so many in possession. But as gun companies stop making them and they get harder and harder to obtain, they WILL gradually become less prevelent.   Keep your shotguns. Keep your handguns.  But let's compromise and ban the military style weapons.  No one needs them.  This ...
