ya know what really burns my butt

Posted: Apr 17, 2012

I have a sister who is receiving assistance for medical through the state because her husband decided "to take a break from working" and is laying on the couch all day, while all she does is work at Taco Bell. So, she is receiving food stamps and medical assistance.

Here is what gets me! She takes her kids to the doctor for EVERYTHING. Her youngest has a cold (probably allergies), and he was stuffed up and according to my sister, "Had a hard time breathing the other night." So, she took him to the doctor....

She thought his fingers were bent funny, so she made an appn. for that, and then insisted on an MRI because he has "coordination issues" and all of this to find NOTHING WRONG.

She was worried that he had arthritis because he walks crooked, and once again, NOTHING WRONG.

I am so mad at her for abusing the system. I told her that also. I pay an extremely high deductible on top of high premiums per month, and feel that if she had to pay even a little bit every time she went, she would stop going for this foolishness.

Then, I sit and ponder how many people do this... How many people receiving help who take advantage, thereby causing my rates to KEEP ON CLIMBING!

I AM FUMING RIGHT NOW... Please, help me to calm down.

just think, maybe she needs psychological help to deal with anxiety...and she can't afford it, it's not in her area, they'd just stick her on pills.

you probably abuse the system also - who_needs_help

I too know people who abuse the system and it is not fair. I am not biased either or judgemental. I too have been there when my kids were little with a minimum wage job and a deadbeat ex-husband who didn't help at all. Yes, I got help, but I needed it. We did not abuse it - oh and by the way, I got off the system and have been off and working for YEARS and YEARS. I am an independent contractor and had to find my own insurance, and believe me I pay for it. Obviously you are either on the system and don't really have a need to be OR you have a job that provides insurance. It sounds to me like this woman's husband is a lazy bum like mine was and should be a man and help support his family.
I am not on system... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I have a 14,000 deductible and pay 89.00 a week for the premium...

How is that for abuse? My hubby and I together make close to 60,000 a year. Take the 14,000 plus the 4628 a year in premiums, that is 18,628.00!!!! That is 1/3 of my income. Lets remember Uncle Sam takes another 1/3.

Why should I pay 1/3 of my income for medical so my sisters husband can lay on a couch and she can run to the doctor for a hangnail?

I would not be upset if it was used for its intent, to help those in need. ABUSE IS NOT NEED.

I am in the same boat you are. I know you are not on the system, I was replying to the person who seemed to be sticking up for your sister and her lazy husband. I totally understand your point of view. As I said, I figure she is either on the system or has insurance provided. Best of luck to you -
Maybe you should be upset with your brother-in-law - instead of your sister.

Is there a post you don't comment on? - Its like you permeate every thread

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't get me wrong, I know this is a public forum and we're all entitled to comment through posting; however, you seem to be compelled to post on nearly every single flipping comment and every thread and (here's where my confusion comes in), to comment something like THIS which is just to insert snark and sarcasm and what appears to be just nasty in general.

If you don't have anything of substance to contribute, why must you still feel compelled to post? Is it OCD? I notice you jumped on this as the first one to comment, too.

I just don't understand people who feel the need to make their presence known in threads they obviously have no interest in and nothing productive or constructive to contribute.

Weird.

I don't see docs ordering MRIs for no reason. - Strange

[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder what is in the child's medical record to indicate this?

Also, the food stamps and Medical Assistance are no doubt for the child. Apparently the child qualifies for the assistance for some reason. Is the dad getting unemployment and doing a job search? Maybe you do not know everything.

docs order unnecessary tests all the time - h e l l o

heres your med, go do this test, heres another med, heres another test...

Its all BS

Wow, even if your sister is getting Medical and food - stamp assistance, she IS paying taxes like

[ In Reply To ..]
everyone else I know that works. What is wrong with her taking her child to the doctor?

I never played around with my kids health when they were little. If their fever was too high and I couldn't get it down, they went to the doctor.

If they had a bad cold and was suffering, I took them to the doctor. You would be surprised at how something that seems minor could actually be a symptom of something bigger.

My grand baby had a fever off and on for 3wks straight. My daughter took her to the doctor and he said she was teething.

After 3wks of taking her back and forth to doctor and Prompt Care with fevers of 102 to 103, she finally took her to the emergency room and come to find out she had a really bad urinary tract infection and had to be admitted.

Now she is seeing a specialist for her kidneys and there is a possibility she may need surgery.

Had my daughter just kept giving her Tyelnol and to control the fever instead of trying to find out where it was coming from, we would have never known this.

Wrong. Having money taken out of your check - only to receive more back

[ In Reply To ..]
at the end of the year than you paid in is NOT paying taxes. Having money taken out of your check and receiving welfare from the government in the form of help paying for your food and health insurance that equals more than was taken out of your check and then still getting back more at the end of the year than you paid in is STILL NOT paying taxes.
Let's place the blame for our economy on the - backs of poor people SM
[ In Reply To ..]
why don't we? Let's go after the poor and the elderly. How dare they not pay taxes (poor) and we just can't afford Medicare or Social Security if we want to pay down our debt, right? Why not get angry at the real culprits who brought down this economy. This is a great way to divide the common man and have them attacking each other instead of focusing on corporate welfare.

I transcribe ER reports and many times MRI or CT is ordered - to calm down persistent parents

[ In Reply To ..]
Had one just last night where they assured the parents the child's examination was normal, but, because the parents had an older child who had a similar injury earlier in her life, they were ADAMANT about this child receiving an MRI. The doctor went ahead and ordered it basically just to prove there was nothing wrong with the kid and to get the parents out of the ER more or less.

I suspect this wasn't an isolated case and probably a lot of times a costly study, such as an MRI, is ordered just to put the parents' minds at rest...and free up room in the ER.

Visits to the ER and docs - Mg

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't care whether or not I have insurance or whether or not someone else doesn't like it, when it comes to my children, if they're sick with a fever, I take them for care.

ERs must be totally different than pediatricians - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
For the pediatric clinic I am always transcribing "after conservative medical treatment has failed" and tests almost always have a differential diagnosis as reason for tests. I don't see any testing done without a good reason.

Work at Taco Bell is still work. - employer insurance?

[ In Reply To ..]
I suppose Taco Bell does not provide health insurance. Can children get private health insurance now if they have a pre-existing condition?

Sounds like her child qualifies for assistance because - she has low income and possibly

[ In Reply To ..]
cannot afford insurance. But she is still paying taxes. Does not sound like she is sitting around being lazy living off the system, at least she is working.

So what she takes her kid to the doctor. Sounds like a good parent to me, she's concerned about her child's health.

Because of the odd "dislikes" - IMHO

[ In Reply To ..]
the purpose of the post is apparently to drum up some hate against low income people with kids who need health care. Otherwise, why the dislikes? Now why would anyone want to deprive a child of health care?

I agree with you... - anon

One my "best" friends left a great job with all the OT she could get making like $15/hr with great insurance, PTO, 401k, etc. and finally got caught up and could afford her family of 4 (her, hubby, 2 kids) to just one day up and quit her job, move an hour away (spent her whole tax return on an apartment) to move somewhere new with no job lined up and finally got one after a month at a gas station making $9/hr. Um.....

This chapped my butt b/c all she did was complain about working at gas stations (which there is nothing with it if you love doing it BTW) to getting a great job with great pay (for her) and everything else along with it, and get off assistance, just to up and move and go back to the same old **** and go back on assistance, MA, food stamps, etc. I barely talk to her b/c I'm just over it.

I am sorry your nephew possibly has a serious illness - Prayers for your family

[ In Reply To ..]
How very sad and scary for your little nephew to be going through this, and for your sister and you. My niece recently had a strange skin thing and we were so relieved that it was not melanoma.

You have no idea how many abuse. My state - finally had to set it to where

[ In Reply To ..]
the ERs could turn them away if the doctors on an initial assessment found that the illness was not an emergency, yes even children. I used to work in a rurual health clinic, and we probably had half and half private insurance and Medicaid, but the visits would be probably over 2:1 with the Medicaid. Our state has had to cut so many off of the program now because it was going broke. Wonder why! The doctor I worked for also moonlighted at ERs and would get so frustrated with the parents of these kids that would bring them in during the middle of the night for something that should have waited until the next day costing the state hundreds to thousands of dollars, but hey, it's free so who cares.

As far as the ones above stating that it is basically okay because she is a taxpayer, I would have to disagree. Just because taxes are taken out of your check does not really make you a tax payer. If you get back more than you paid in, then you're not paying taxes. If you qualify for food stamps and Medicaid, then I'm pretty sure you qualify for EIC, which I find just as irritating as the Medicaid that people actually gets thousands in cash back that they didn't even pay in.

WTH?? Talk about mean, cruel, bitter people! - You guys are terrible. I don't know

[ In Reply To ..]
anyone who likes or even wants to be poor. You all are bashing on poor people who take their children to the doctor with a medical card.

The same people that complain that you yourselves cannot find a job, the very ones complaining of your pay being reduced to nothing because of outsourcing and ASR and yet you talk about these people as if you know them personally and what their lives and circumstances are like.

This board seriously is starting to get old. Some of the attitudes on here NEVER cease to amaze me. It's sickening.

What type of quality of life do you all have that causes you to be so miserable and mean all the time?

And if this mom feels she needs to take her son or daughter to the doctor thats her business, if he's sick, he's sick. The aunt who posted this ought to be ashamed of herself.

I'm thinking it is just the post of someone in need of attention - W/O anything important to say

[ In Reply To ..]
In the case of a true emergency, no ER will turn away a patient. If physicians are ordering unnecessary tests, that WILL catch up to them. When patients abuse the system, there are checks and balances that bring the focus of attention onto them and there are consequences, maybe today or tomorrow, but there are consequences.

I think there is some misconception here. I - would not consider myself

[ In Reply To ..]
to be cruel or mean. Heck, you want to get right down to it, I'm not by any means rich. I have children who I have to take to the doctor myself. That's part of life as a parent, but there are also people who abuse the Medicaid systems. I don't take them for every little thing as I cannot afford to. If my child has a fever, depending on other symptoms, I may or may not take them to the doctor. I will admit there were times that my kids might should have went to an ER, but I did what I had to do to wait it out until I could get to a doctor the next day as I knew I had a large deductible.

The Medicaid system in my state is going broke. There are so many sick people that cannot get on it. They have no money, legitimate illnesses, but they can't get on it.

I'm not sure about the others who have agreed with the OP, but I am not one of the ones on this board complaining about their job.

Hang in there burned butt :-) - anon

I understand your frustration. Some people do abuse the system. Being poor has nothing to do with why you are angry. I grew up poor. My family used assistance as needed, BUT not running to the doctor every time I coughed, sneezed, fell down, had a runny nose, etc. Also, I feel for you and your family. I hope this child is truly not being swept under the rug if he has a real serious illness. But it sounds to me from your OP that mom just runs him in b/c the ER cannot turn away and she doesn't have to pay for it, that is abusing the system.

Some things from my own experience: I used to work in a chiro office and we used to accept MA, the copay was $1. ONE DOLLAR! These MA patients would come in in fancy clothes, fake nails, and the newest cell phone but yet did not have the $1 copay! Seriously? Also, my MIL's husband works at a bakery and a customer ordered a fancy wedding cake and paid for the entire thing with food stamps. Are you kidding me? That's abusing the system. A friend of mine is on MA and complains about the healthcare system. Her birth control copay is $5 a month and that's "too much." HELLO! AND.....she actually told me once that she was waiting for her food stamp card to buy food (not groceries) for her son's bday party, like the cake and soda. That is BS!!! My tax dollars paying for your soda when I can't afford it myself? I'm living on Ramen so you can buy candy/gum? Thank God food stamps can't go towards cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol. I think that food stamps/card should list items that are acceptable, just like WIC checks. People would be alot more selective in their shopping if they had to buy fruits, veggies, and healthy food and weren't allowed junk and made to pay for that themselves. That would cut down on abusing the system. So I agree with you, my butt is burned too!

No disrespect to anyone receiving help if you really need it! Just don't abuse it! It's help, not a handout!

Thank you - burned butt

[ In Reply To ..]
I am so glad that someone sees my point for what it is. She is abusing the system, she eats at pizza places local to her that allow the food stamp card, and I think that is just horrible! She gets $400 in food stamps a month and, like you said, the bulk of her food is chips, soda, ho-ho's, pizza, ice cream... It just makes me sick.

I know in my heart there is nothing wrong with either of her children, she just goes to the doctor all the time, for everything. Son fell off bike and scraped his knee and she took him to the doctor becuase "it was a big scrape." Then she took him back becuase there must be a reason why he fell an wanted his equilibrium checked. Then he tripped over his own 2 feet and cut his hand, and another trip to the doctor, this time she told the doc she could not afford Neosporin for his cut, so she went to the doctor for it. This is nonstop...

I grew up poor also. I had 2 children that I supported with no child support and "made too much" for assistance, so every dental appn, and well check for my children was paid IN CASH off of my $30,000 a year that I earned. When my daughter fell and twisted her knee and could not walk, I paid $700 for the ER visit. When she had a tooth fixed, $300 cash that day.

Like I said, if she had to pay even $10.00 for these visits, she would only take them if there was REALLY something wrong!

Agree on some, disagree on others - Libra

I used to work as an ER registration clerk and then a bill collector @ the same rural hospital. One night, I had a guy bring a kid in for an ER visit because he didn't want to buy a Band-Aid for his kid's scrape. Another night, I had an entire foster family come in for scabies. To me, those are examples of abuse of the system.

The state in which I live tried to implement an HMO Medicaid system w/ the same rules as those of us w/ regular insurance have. It did no good, because as a collector if I had a patient who qualified for a card to begin with, what can I get out of that person to pay the bill?

I've never been a mean girl on here just for the sake of being a bwitch, and I don't intend to start now, but I do think there are some things the government needs to fix w/ this situation, and OP, I sincerely hope your nephew is perfectly fine. Take care!

Hope you're not republican because they - apparently want SM

[ In Reply To ..]
government to stay out of people's personal lives. Oh wait...take that back. It's okay if they are poor or women of child-bearing age, then it's fair game.

They are also outraged that government - would get involved SM

[ In Reply To ..]
in food choices, school lunches, etc. They believe that people can make their own decisions, but since the poor need assistance, they feel they have a right to dictate what foods they buy? Total hypocrites.

I am stunned that you are so hateful toward your own sister. How is what she is doing abusing the system? Can she MAKE her sorry old man get up and go to work??? He is the one abusing, not her. Good lord. Do you have children? The woman is just taking care of her babies, not abusing her insurance. They are LITTLE KIDS. There must be other issues involved in this relationship, because your post is just MEAN. : (
