The majority of liberals agree. Obamacare is what resulted when conservatives campaigned relentlessly for decades against a single payer system for all Americans. A Medicare-for-all type healthcare is definitely in our future, as a majority of Americans already support it.

Are we to believe the rhetoric that the only ones supporting single payer have done no research and are too lazy to read? LOL.

Now there is some typical conservative spin if I ever heard it. I am on single payer, and I have researched it and I support it. Millions of Americans actually already are receiving it and liking it, but I won't presume that the ones who do are too lazy to research it.

for a monthly amount with add-ons available for an extra fee, supplemental policies to cover copays, dental, vision, etc. A huge plus is that with Medicare there are no referrals needed. Did I forget to say I love Medicare?

pay for basic coverage. If you want more than the basic, you pay for a supplemental policy. Everyone ends up paying their way unless so poor you qualify for help from Medicaid.

Well that's great. Anyone who is entitled to a government benefit is certainly free to forego the government "handout" to which they are otherwise entitled if they choose to do so. I agree that not everyone is old and/or disabled, nor do they want to be, but I can assure you that every one of us will eventually be "old" whether they want to be or not (if they manage to survive and live long enough). Of course, after living so long and paying into the system for decades, some people receiving government "handouts" are receiving the benefits they paid into for decades working in the public or the private sector. It should be noted that soldiers can retire with full benefits after 20 years of service to our country. Although it would be patriotic to forego the government "handout," it would hardly be prudent to forego the benefits you earned as a soldier with decades of service. Likewise, many Americans employed in the private sector for decades paid into the government system for upwards of 40+ years and are merely collecting the "handouts" they understood they would be receiving when amounts were collected and withheld by the government from their wages for the entire time they were employees.

It would serve conservatives well if they would entertain the idea of a country where not everyone who receives a government benefit is old and/or disabled since we are, in fact, living in such a country.

After reading the OP's article, I agreed with Bill Maher that we should have a single-payer system. I also don't wear knickers, but I have really good single-payer insurance that would cover me if I somehow became twisted in any way.

My response was certainly not meant in any way to infer a holier than thou tone or superiority in any way but rather to counter the poster's inference that people who receive government benefits/handouts should be classified as somehow inferior or "lesser than" Americans that do not take pride in working, making an honest living, and/or are receiving benefits/handouts that they somehow do not deserve.

This "undeserving handout" meme is a common theme in conservative political rhetoric, and it is my opinion that this one size fits all lumping of people into a deadbeat or 47%-type category does not serve the GOP well at all.

Why should you get to say what is right for me? Frankly, I resent it. I am fully capable of deciding what I need. If it works for you, great, happy for you. Obamacare has been a nightmare for me in terms of a much, much higher premium, and now I am already fighting for my first of probably many refusals to cover what my doctor prescribes, and it's only a difference of $17 between generic and brand. Is it too much to ask that those of you for whom this works accepts the fact that it does not work for everyone? I personally feel the govt is way too corrupt to trust them with a single payer system - look at the VA?
