BILL MAHER: "President Obama keeps insisting that's ISIS is not Islamic. Well, maybe they don't practice the Muslim faith the same way he does. But if vast numbers of Muslims across the world believe, and they do, that humans deserve to die for merely holding a different idea or drawing a cartoon or writing a book or eloping with the wrong person, not only does the Muslim world have something in common with ISIS, it has too much in common with ISIS."

From Iranian Revolution refugee to Evangelical Christian and back again to educated moderate Islamic practice via Harvard Divinity School Master of Theology, Aslan is informed, logical and right on. We need to hear more voices like his. He makes WAY more sense than the dripping sarcasm and misguided Islamophobic foaming at the mouth coming from Bill Maher. Unsophisticated just about sums it up.

Reza Aslan when it comes to religion? Bill has LONG been self-described as an atheist, which is his RIGHT in these United States.

Frankly, watching how childish some religious groups act with their, "My God is better than your God" attitude (and this especially includes some Islamic groups and some Christian groups, as well), I can certainly see where Maher gets his inspiration when writing his material.

atheist beliefs. No one said otherwise. His personal beliefs were not mentioned in the post or in Aslan's comments. The subject of God was not raised either, so I'm not quite sure where you think that attitude is coming from. His discussion is about religion's geopolitical expressions, not its belief systems or deities. IMO, Aslan and the poster have as much right to take Maher's Islamophobia to task as he has to make the comments in the first place.
