Are there any other Republicans...
Posted: Aug 24, 2012
who are troubled by the recent shift to the far right that the Republican party has taken? I strongly believe in fiscal responsibility, and the party used to represent this, but now it seems like it has been hijacked by extremists and that greed is the motivating force in the current Republican party, along with draconian far-right ideas that leave little room for those of us who are more moderate. I find it very troubling, and I'm considering switching my party affiliation to Independent. I was just curious if there were any others like me. ;

That is exactly what made my sister sit up and take notice this time around. Though she is ProChoice, in the past she voted GOP because of other issues, thinking that surely they would never succeed in pushing an amendment through, let alone even think about excluding rape and incest victims.
A crash-course in Willke Christian abortion counseling techniques, Akin's "self-serving scumbag" stance (as Annie Coulter puts it), the ensuing fundraising bonanza, the platform's failure to articulate exclusions, and the party's overall inability to contain the message is why she's withdrawn from the party all together.
I feel certain she will now proceed to keep a keen eye on women's issues at every turn before splitting her ticket up as a new independent who intends to vote Obama/Biden. She's taken a sudden interest in state and national down-ballot races to boot, a new degree of vigilance I've never seen in her before.
And you really think this will end up as a Constitutional - Amendment? Sheesh.

Republicans are proposing this amendment. They have put the scare into me all by themselves. If it is worth scoffing that such an amendment would be enacted, isnt' it worth wondering why the bill was written in the first place. Yes?
So, Ryan proposing a personhood bill....sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
already tried that. You don't think that fits the bill? Do you realize that if personhood passes, then ALL abortion would be not only illegal, but a criminal act punishable by law. That would also apply to IUDs and ectopic pregnancies, and with personhood, it doesn't matter if you are raped or not, or if your life is in danger, abortion would essentially be murder. Think about it.
Still having trouble with accepting the realities of - the GOP platform, I see.

Look, it might be different if the entire campaign had not been run from behind the curtain, with so many "details" shrouded by layers and layers of secrecy. The "just trust me" thing isn't gaining any traction, and has gone way beyond the point-of-no-return (pun fully intended).
It was already a huge stretch, considering he already has LIED about his residency on previous tax returns he released when running for MA governor, or even the fact that he won't release them now. This I-don't-do-details has evolved into running on secret policy agendas, and Tood Akin's injection into the mix has simply put "that whole thing" over the top.
The self-inflicted scare tactics are coming from the right side of the aisle.

The majority of Republican representatives have signed Norquist's pledge. Why are they so beholden to this guy? Who elected him? The current Republican mantra of sweeping spending cuts while advocating unprecented tax cuts for the wealthy is a recipe for disaster. We need public investments and services. Reagan certainly realized this. Anti-government zealots like Norquist have no place in our government,IMO.

The party's "platform" differs from what the party is seeking to legislate. Case in point: HR3's ambivalent definition of rape.
The fact that "the language approved by the party’s platform committee for 2012 is identical" speaks nothing of the rather nonidentical language in the the actual Human Life Amendment itself.

A little scary, but I mostly am grateful for the playing out - of a rise to power by a small percentage
[ In Reply To ..]
of far-right conservatives and fundamentalist religious conservatives. This has been building since the 1970s, starting with many middle of the road people being pulled far right to what they were told was middle-road beliefs. In the process they were told that anyone who didn't agree with them was trying to destroy the country, leading to a division of people against people that has been paralyzing and destroying the country.
It's taken this long to play out but is finally in the process of collapsing. Whether the large population of good balanced conservatives rebuild the Republican party or start another, the whole thing can't finish playing out soon enough for me. We've been in decline for a long time now. Way past time to get to working together to attack our problems instead of each other.

Far right???? I am deeply distressed by the RINOs who now own the party. I guess if you are an extremely liberal democrat, and rather uninformed and unconcerned about the republican party, then the GOP may seem to you to be tacking right BUT if you are a conservative, you are probably horrified at the leftward drift and the words, not to mention actions, of these accommodationists in control of the party. So don't worry, my friend, the GOP is the "me too" party even more than usual these days, and you as a liberal have nothing to worry about. Take a long hard look at romney's real record as one-term gov of Mass., his only elected office, it is as extremely horrifingly liberal as it can be.
So relax, those of us who are hardline conservatives are just about done with the GOP, some will vote for romney as the lesser of the 2 evils and then leave, the rest of us have already left and are taking a long hard look at third party candidates. If the GOP seems to be running to the right, right now, it is only only a feint to get the base back in line, only this time I don't think it is going to work, personally I swore McCain was the last time I would hold my nose and vote for a rino and as a conservative, I have seen nothing in this current election cycle to change my mind. And I say this as a GOP state delegate who plans on registering either libertarian or constitution the day romney is officially nominated.
I'm really tired right now - bootstraps

So forgive me if I have misinterpreted your post. Because what you are saying is something I have been contemplating about Republican party for quite a while.
Somehow you need to take your party back. I think it's unfair to have to form a third party. It would be more fair if the right-wingers form their own party. Depending on the outcome of this election, I hope it will be a natural evolution.
But I don't see this right wing thing going away.
These are just my aimless musings because I'm tired.
But your post is a breath of fresh air.
