Obamas attend Easter service

President Obama, wife Michelle, and their two daughters are attending Easter service Sunday at St. John's Episcopal Church.

The first family walked the short distance from the White House across Lafayette Square to the church, nicknamed "Church of the Presidents."

"Happy Easter, everybody," the president called to reporters as he walked, according to a pool report.

UPDATE (Sunday 12:55 p.m.): The sermon delivered by the Rev. Luis Leon carried a message of moving forward. Via the pool report:

We often want things to go back to the way things used to be, before "work got difficult and faith got confused, and life got more confusing," but when we dwell on the "if only" of life we forget that "God addresses us in the now."

As Jesus told Mary not to hold on to the past, "You cannot go back."

"It drives me crazy when the captains of the religious right are always calling us back ... for blacks to be back in the back of the bus ... for women to be back in the kitchen ... for immigrants to be back on their side of the border."

"The message of Easter is about the power of love over loveless power."

"Easter vision" will allow you to see the whole world in a different way. "There is no injustice so insidious that there can be no truth ... no war so deep that there can be no peace ... no enemy so bitter that they can't become a friend."

"Easter vision" means recognizing reality in a new and wonderful way.

"May God bless you with Easter vision now and forever."

President Obama attended an Easter service with his family today at St. John's Episcopal Church near the White House, and the Pastor delivering the sermon at the service veered into political territory when he slammed the religious right for living in the past and lionizing "the good old days."

As the first family trekked across Lafayette Square to the church, Mr. Obama offered a "Happy Easter, everybody" to the press and onlookers assembled.

The sermon at the service, delivered by Dr. Luis Leon, an Episcopal pastor who delivered the benediction at Mr. Obama's second inauguration, took a turn for the political when the pastor decried those who wax nostalgic about the way things once were.

"I hear all the time the expression 'the good old days'," Leon said. "Well, the good old days, we forget they have been good for some, but they weren't good for everybody.

"You can't go back, you can't live in the past," he added. "It drives me crazy when the captains of the religious right are always calling people back...for Blacks to be back in the back of the bus, for women to be back in the kitchen, for gays to be in the closet and for immigrants to be on their side of the border."

"What you and I understand," Leon said, "is that when Jesus says, 'You can't hang onto me,' he says, 'You know it's not about the past, it's not about the before, it's not about the way things were, but about the way things can be in the now.'"

Luis asked his audience, "Will you accept the invitation from our Gospel today to see things with Easter vision, recognizing reality in a different and new and wonderful way?"

"Today the choice is yours," he said. "Jesus Christ is risen today - that's the proclamation. May God bless you with Easter vision now and forever. Amen."

And to even say Rev Leon's sermon was divisive would translate into an opinion that: blacks still should have to sit at the back of the bus, yearning for the rest of the ugly past as it relates to blacks; that women belong in the kitchen and be stripped of independence and equality in the workplace; and that we should shut the door on immigration, without which none of us would be here.

You could have just said that in the first place instead of putting the words in the wrong mouth.

It is very possible that Rev Leon did run it by BHO, but what's the harm in stating the circumstance properly rather than misrepresenting the facts?

I would be incredibly surprised to hear that the sermon was run past anyone - in the White House for approval.

Rev. Leon just doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would even go for that. Like you said, "maybe," but I think highly, highly doubtful.

That's what happened at the prayer breakfast. WH asked Ben Carson to give them a copy of the remarks he was going to make, but he said he didn't. He said what he wanted to say. :) Barack Hussein Obama looked like the fool he is.
