An interesting read in the Washington Times-I posted the newspaper

Posted: Apr 3, 2013

waste their time because it's not somebody (Joe Curl) or some newspaper they can believe no matter how truthful the analysis or opinion of the writer.

No flaming necessary as I'm just posting an article that does tell the truth even if the headline doesn't give the true contents of the article. It compares Obama and Bush and it's a "thinker."

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Being president of the U.S., the most powerful man in the world, is often most about perception. The man (or, one day, woman) in the job takes actions large and small every day, but it is the perception of the man that seeps into the everyday lives of working Americans.

That’s why presidential candidates always hit Philadelphia for a cheesesteak during campaigns (Democrats to Pat’s, Republicans to Geno’s). Sure, they’re running billion-dollar operations trying to win the White House, but one picture of them wolfing down a Cheez Whiz-covered glob of meat on a Philly street hits home with millions of voters: “Hey, that guy’s just like me! He loves him a Pat’s [or Geno’s] cheesesteak, too!” (Unless you’re John F. Kerry and order Swiss cheese — then everyone hates you.)

Sometimes, that perception cuts to the core. Like when President George W. Bush stopped playing golf in 2003, at the height of the Iraq War.

too bad they could not refrain from talking about the girls - bad form

[ In Reply To ..]
It is not news that the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children, yet the article characterizes this request as a "demand". That seems pretty childish to me.

Oh, too bad. They're part of the whole package of this first family. - Gimme gimme. (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
The whole family is in bad form, just taking and taking and no giving back.

that's right. It IS too bad - bad form

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, but if a grown-up journalist can't discuss the president without bringing up his children, and then goes on to call other grown-up journalists "losers" for respecting the girls' privacy, then yes, that IS bad form.

I had to get in on this new naming trend:)

What a bizarre series of threads of late. A couple million dollars on presidential vacations and that's all anyone can seem to talk about. Bush spent trillions of dollars, thousands of lives, and the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Amendments to accomplish nothing lasting, all the while racking up several hundred days more vacation time than any other president. It's a bit late to be chiming in.

The interesting thing psychologically is that every time an executive takes a big expensive vacation it's on their dime too, but because taxation is direct whereas consumerism and employment are indirect they feel that Obama is ripping them off while the private sector fat cats are spending their own money.

For instance, take the company that might sell these now legendary $20 shoes. The shoe probably cost a buck to make and was constructed either by machines or slaves or people enslaved by the machines. So, every time you buy the shoe and then the CEO of Pay More Shoes goes on a vacation, he's doing it on your dime. Moreover though, because he's not paying his employees (especially the slaves, but everyone else too) what they are worth or what the company could afford if the leadership's own salaries were commensurate with their work, he's doing it on the dime of every employee too.

They likely got the rubber from one of the many rubber farms in Africa, which are routinely controlled by diamond and coke supported warlord regimes who maintain social order for the American resource exploitation companies in the region, who in turn use cheap local labor. So through cooperation with equally corrupt resource harvesting companies and criminals, they are also ripping off everyone in Africa.

Those shoes will then need to be shipped to America via plane or boat, which will require oil which is subsidized by you the taxpayer. For every step of the process, the workers are going to need to eat and what better than corn? Did I say what better? I meant what else. Corn may have once been food, but now food is corn. And that's subsidized. Along with tobacco for reasons I can't fully understand.

To top it all off, they claim the company is based in the Cayman Islands and don't pay corporate taxes, so that way they're also ripping you off by forcing you to pay more for a government whose constant military protection and diplomatic influence they require to operate in the third world in the first place so they can give your job to slaves to make shoes, which are designed via the principle of "value engineering" to break in a couple months so you'll need new shoes.

Oh, and for the thrifty CEO, he can give to charity. That way when someone brings up the fact that they aren't contributing much to society, they can answer "But the rich give so much to charity." The wealthiest Americans donate 1.3% of their income while the poorest give 3.2%. Also, charitable giving comes with a sufficient tax break and by giving what to you or me would be an absurd amount of money, but to them is pocket change, they can look amazing without having to break a financial sweat.

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/04/why-the-rich-dont-give/309254/

Also, when the rich do donate, they are less likely to donate to social programs. They give their money to the arts and entertainment. Who has the time and money for the arts these days? Those rich people who just funded them. Who can't afford the ballet or the opera? Those poor people who worked hard and made those rich people. The other big donation is to universities and schools the donator graduated from. In other words, rich people support the creation of things for them to do and new rich people like themselves. The universities that take in the most donations are Ivy League schools. Those schools, of course, are known for serving smaller populations with much larger amounts of money than other universities.

If you keep tracing the connections between all the corrupt companies starting with the people who dig it up or grow it, to the people who ship it, to the people who make the shoe, to the people who advertise it, to the people who sell it, you will find a web of corruption and greed spanning the globe.

The truth is that we all only feel more ripped off by taxes because the government, in the dumbest move they've ever made, actually tells us how much of our money they've taken. They should take a page out of the Wall Street playbook and just take our money directly from the employer, never reveal how much we made and then give it back to us as long as we agree to vote how our representative tells us to, serve some branch of the government and, of course, smile and act like we enjoy it. Then we'd be getting ripped off in a way that's more familiar to us all.

"They're turning kids into slaves just to make cheaper sneakers.
But what's the real cost?
'Cause the sneakers don't seem that much cheaper.
Why are we still paying so much for sneakers
When you got them made by little slave kids
What are your overheads?" -Think About It by Flight of the Conchords

It is a shame, especially since the girls - are still so young.

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand there are plenty of people who aren't happy with the president, but that has NOTHING to do with those little girls.

Watchdog group's double standard (also from Washington Times)... - bad form

[ In Reply To ..]
Judicial Watch "has compiled details of the cost of the Obamas's various vacations and trips throughout the president's first term in office. A cursory review through the site's archives does not reveal that the group made similar efforts to obtain information on the travels of the previous Republican administration, however. The conservative organization has filed 18 lawsuits against the Bill Clinton and other Democratic administrations, however."

Here, OP. 1. Half the opinion piece is about not being phony - enough to suit people. Not a surprise. Half the

[ In Reply To ..]
criticism has always been that they haven't produced enough displays of pretend economies.

2. Of course: When President Bush did something nice and responsible many people RUSHED to point it out. The notion that he was too humble and pubs too high principled to point them out is ludicrous. There were relatively few, though, and they were grossly outweighed by the indulgences of a president who spent more time playing and on vacation than most of the others put together. Remember, this was "small-government" and "states' power" president. BTW, his daily schedule, including the strikingly few hours spent working each day and the very large portion devoted to exercise, is extremely well documented and is already in history books. Go google.

3. The day he was elected, President Obama inherited the biggest economic crash since the Great Depression. No, his girls shouldn't be deprived for most of their childhoods by phony shows of economy. Now I realize some disagree, but even spectacularly fake displays wouldn't satisfy those people.

4. The Obamas are in the 1%--barely. They didn't start there and earned every penny through hard, smart work. At that, though, they're only in the bottom 2% or so of that group, and many would consider them barely out of the upper middle class. The top 10% of the 1% group could buy them out with one of their business managers' pocket change. Pretending that they're among the wealthy classes who rule our country is for fools.

5. As one of those who intensely dislike people who try to make a fool of me, I never wanted Bush to pretend not to be wealthy, and I certainly don't want this family acting like they should be eating with their hands. Which I suspect is really what's behind all this. Festering resentment that most people think they really do belong in the White House.

It must be a really painful illusion to try to keep up -- the one of superiority over them. They are too smart, too charming, too gracious, too honest, too well groomed, too good as parents, too well mannered to suit those who need their resentment validified. They are also too well to do and, individually and as a couple, way too successful -- far, far beyond what the vast majority of those who hate them have accomplished with their lives. That's why Bush of The Bush Family could spend his presidency playing at ranching without criticism, but this one is grudged the very air he breaths.

Very, very well stated. - nm
