Watching the "debating" here and reading the newspaper stories on gun deaths, etc.

Posted: Jan 21, 2013

Those in the country that are for gun control seem to lump all gun deaths into the final total. I just read today where the editor of the paper pointed out that there are 30,000 gun deaths a year...but (s)he doesn't break it down to non-criminal or criminal.

Most of those deaths were caused by drug deals gone bad, drug deals, gang turf wars, etc. All people are thinking about are the 1% not caused by criminal actions, but the recent tragedy in CT has zeroed in on lumping LEGAL gun owners as criminals.

Dislike this post all you want but legal gun owners will pay the price of gun control. Criminals will still have guns. Have you ever heard of a criminal registering their guns? During buyouts by law enforcement officials, the only guns a criminal will turn in are those that are nonworking or too "hot" to handle since most buyouts are "no questions asked" type of deals. Have you ever looked closely to the guns turned in during one of those buyouts? Broken, dirty, rusty, and even "wall hangers."

What's really sickening is that once a gun is registered, if that gun is reported stolen by the owner, that owner would still be responsible for the crimes that are committed with that gun with the way most of the bills are being written that they're trying to push through Congress.

Now that the media is jumping on the bandwagon, ALL gun accidents are making "front page news" - the example of the 3 gun show accidents - people are really getting hysterical even if accidents at gun shows happened all the time before CT. This is just another example of not letting a crisis go to waste.

There is NO mention of mental health issues by "gun control advocates." It was mentioned in Obama's EO's but quickly buried by the media after a day or two.

I'm off my soapbox for now.

Can you please explain this? - RC

What specifically do you mean? We don't take the owner of a stolen gun and sentence them without the defense of a lawyer and trial by a jury.

I see no problem with treating guns the way we treat cars. Licensing, registration and regulation.

As a side note, we can't drive cars under the influence--is there such a law for operating guns? I don't even know.

where did you get this figure? It exceeds FBI data by nearly 300%. What editor of what paper are you referring to? The FBI does, indeed, keep separate data on justifiable homicides vs murder.

Where did you come up with the data for "most deaths" caused by drug deals, etc?

What do you mean when you say: "All people are thinking about are the 1% not caused by criminal actions". I don't agree with that at all.

In spite of asking for an explanation of what it means to lump legal gun owners as criminals, I have yet to get a response from any of the people who spout this notion.

Sorry, but nothing you have said seems to be based in fact. I am happy to meet facts with reason and rationality. Just saying anything based on bias or opinion doesn't meet the criteria for me.

Most murders are in a few large cities. We have a - gang problem, not a gun problem. - n/t

Gang-related homicides average 12% of all homicides. - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
"The total number of gang homicides reported by respondents in the NYGS sample averaged nearly 2,000 annually from 2006 to 2010. During the same time period, the FBI estimated, on average, more than 16,000 homicides across the United States.

These estimates suggest that gang-related homicides typically accounted for around 12 percent of all homicides annually."

Gun Deaths In US Projected To Top Auto DeathsDec 24, 2012
Guns and cars have long been among the leading causes of non-medical deaths in the U.S. By 2015, firearm fatalities will probably exceed traffic fatalities for the first time, based on data compiled by Bloomberg.   While motor-vehicle deaths dropped 22 percent from 2005 to 2010, gun fatalities are rising again after a low point in 2000, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Shooting deaths in 2015 will probably rise to almost 33,000, and those rel ...

There are a bunch of people in the gallery that have been causing a commotion. The Chair is getting furious since this is dragging out longer than it's supposed to and has now stated and told the Capitol Police that prosecution may take place. What the heck is wrong with people nowadays? Disrupting a democratic process like this was never the American way. Respect for the process (not talking about the politicians) has to take place in an orderly way. Just because some don't like what ...

10 Reasons Why Flu Shots Are More Dangerous Than A Flu! (just Sharing Not Debating)Nov 29, 2011
The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict: 1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots. A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots a ...

An Opinion From Australian NewspaperJan 09, 2010
Military shock and awe won't overcome terrorism January 8, 2010 A smarter approach, which keeps the threat in perspective, is needed. NOT all ways of dying rate equally in the public mind. More than 1500 Australians died last year in road accidents, many of them preventable. Had terrorists killed the same number, we would have found that unbearable. Even a failed bombing attempt on a plane bound for Detroit on Christmas Day has instantly triggered tighter security. Because the Nige ...

7 Stories Obama Doesn't Want ToldNov 30, 2009
John F. Harris John F. Harris – Mon Nov 30, 5:45 am ET Presidential politics is about storytelling. Presented with a vivid storyline, voters naturally tend to fit every new event or piece of information into a picture that is already neatly framed in their minds. No one understands this better than Barack Obama and his team, who won the 2008 election in part because they were better storytellers than the opposition. The pro-Obama narrative featured an almost mysti ...
