Freeport, Ill. —In light of recent protests culminating in the arrest of 14 people on Wednesday, including Rev. Jesse Jackson, officials from Sensata Technologies released a statement Thursday addressing working arrangements for employees.
“We communicated to employees that we’d be a bit flexible with regards to their working arrangements,” said Jacob Sayer, Vice President of International Relations and Communications for Sensata Technologies. “We’ve told them that if they felt that they couldn’t be productive in that environment because of a number of trespassing incidents and the amount of arrests that have taken place at the site, that they didn’t have to come into work.”There have been a total of 23 protest-related arrests this month.“That’s (working arrangements) going to be something that we will re-evaluate on a daily basis here as we move forward,” said Sayer. “We’ve had a number of complaints from employees, people expressing concern that the work environment has become stressful and intimidating. We’re trying to make it a little easier on them.”
Sensata develops, manufactures, and sells sensors and controls for auto companies. The Freeport plant will close by the end of 2012 with 170 positions being moved to China.
Thursday, Sensata released a statement addressing concerns:
Moving the plant:
Sensata completed the purchase of Honeywell’s Automotive on Board (AoB) business in Freeport, Ill., in January 2011. As part of the agreement, we agreed to lease space from Honeywell in Freeport for two years while we consolidated manufacturing in other Sensata locations. From the beginning, we’ve been open about our business plans and have met with the Freeport employees on numerous occasions to tell them about our decision to move manufacturing from Freeport to other Sensata locations including sites in Asia. Seventy-five percent of the revenue from the AoB business comes from Asia.
Severance Benefits
Our agreement with Honeywell stipulated that the benefits received by the transferred employees, including severance benefits, would be at least equivalent to what they were receiving at the time we purchased the business. Sensata has not reduced the benefits, severance or otherwise, of the employees in Freeport and we are recognizing their years of service to Honeywell in determining their benefit level.”
US Flag in Freeport
“Sensata is leasing the manufacturing space in Freeport from Honeywell. Honeywell manages the flags on the site. While we have been a tenant there, we have not requested that the US flag be taken down for any reason.”
Relationship with Bain
“Sensata is an independent, public company and has many shareholders in addition to Bain. While Bain representatives sit on our Board of Directors, the management of Sensata is responsible for running the company.”
