xrays confirmed it today

Posted: Jan 17, 2014

I do have mild arthritis in my hip.  I sure was hoping that was not the case.  I went to see my regular doctor about my thyroid and asked for an xray of my hip since it hurt so bad after jogging a few weeks ago.  he said that is the worst thing I could do is jog.  So it's an eliptical or biking for me from here on out!

Arthritis and exercise - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
As long as you can do some form of exercise, your arthritis will be manageable. Jogging is bad for lots of joints. Biking might tax your hips a little bit, whereas an elliptical should be pain-free. How about swimming? They say swimming is the best exercise for any kind of arthritis.

I was offered physical therapy but I cant afford it - i am working with vocational rehab

at my next appointment I am going to talk to them about access to therapy through my state and maybe some aquatics classes or water therapy. Thanks for the suggestion!

One day I hope to be able to afford an elliptical.

Yes! Do all of that! - sm

Ask all of those questions. Water aerobics, swimming, aquatherapy...all would help you immensely.

Do you have a local gym with reasonable rates? In my town, we have Charter Fitness. It's only $10 a month for unlimited use of all the equipment, including elliptical and stationary bike! Do you have Charter Fitness in your area?
No we have Golds Gym, the Y, Anytime Fitness - and the gym on post

my husband is DoD i'm trying to find out if I can join the gym under his name. all of the gyms here are terribly expensive.
I used to use the base gym when I was a dependent but no swimming classes - sm

We have Ladies Premiere Fitness and the insurance pays $10 month for it if you go 3 times a week for 3 months (they reimburse you) once the gym lets them know about it. Of note if you're interested the insurance also pays toward Weight Watchers and may possibly also pay toward other weight loss groups, can't remember.
WALKING is very effective and FREE - A gym is not necessary

Just walk. Nothing wrong with it ... it is very effective.

Any exercise done to excess causes stress, so just be sensible and do it within limits.
I have been doing that it just is so cold right now - even though i live in south Alabama

it has been unusually cold this year. Waiting for this cold snap to be over. I walked twice yesterday and once today. I also have a stationary bike that I use. Very little discomfort with both of those.

Arthritis - sm

The fact that you have "mild" arthritis in your hip is not surprising. It isn't all that unusual. It also does NOT mean the arthritis is the cause of your discomfort.

The prevalence of an arthritis diagnosis is very high, something like 22 to 33%. When you consider how many people never see doctors to get it diagnosed, it is much higher. It increases with age, too. The fact is that if you live long enough, your joints do get some arthritis, with or without symptoms.

Physical therapy is expensive and might not help all that much. It really isn't anything you can't do for yourself. There is nothing magically curative about a therapist telling you to do exercises.

Chances are very good that your problem is in the soft tissue, not the joint itself. The fact that you insisted on an x-ray and got this diagnosis does not change that.

well I have brachydactyly and other bone/joint issues - so im prone to this type of thing

My father was disabled before he was 60 due to our hereditary bone/joint issues. I wasn't surprised that I have arthritis but was hoping I was not going down the same road as my dad. And yes I insisted on an xray because I fell off of my deck in 2011, trimalleolar fracture of left foot and broke third and fourth metatarsals of right foot, the side I landed on and the side of my hip that is currently bothering me. So I did have a reason to be concerned.

That being said, what do you mean by soft tissue injury? This has been going on for over 6 months I can't imagine what would be going on for this long.

Thanks for your input.

Supposedly, DHS shut down 20 of these birth tourist homes, all in California. It costs up to $50K for the Chinese mothers-to-be to come and stay here, having their babies in a regular hospital, and then go home. The Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution grants automatic citizenship to everyone born in the United States. It was intended to ensure that freed slaves would be able to claim citizenship they rightly deserved. Today, however, some creative "birth tourists" are ta ...
