What antidepressant works best for you?

Posted: Apr 21, 2014

I'm looking for one that doesn't cause weight gain, edema, insomnia, or hair loss, but gives energy and makes you feel normal.  Or is that asking too much?  I want to try Effexor but the withdrawal horror stories online have so far kept me from doing that.

you expect - way too much from a pill

There is no evidence any antidepressant actually works. They are expensive and you will have a heckofa time getting off them if you take for extended period of time. Look into gratitude and changing your perspective on life and problems.

Zoloft works for me. - Pills can work

It has absolutely helped me.

I take Zoloft too but I think I need to have - zuni bear

the doctor up it to 100 mg. I am at 50 mg but still a little depressed but a lot less anxious. How many mg of Zoloft do you take? I have read a lot of people take 100 mg of Zoloft.
My doctor started me out years ago with 25 mg, - then upped it to 50. The 50mg size - sm

worked well for a long time. Then it began to lose its effectiveness, and I could feel not all, but some of the depression coming back. The doctor said that was normal, and put me on 100 mg. That worked very well.

Eventually some things happened in my life that, combined with the Zoloft gradually losing its effectiveness, caused me to start feeling part of the depression again. I could function, but just wasn't feeling as well as I had before. The doctor said I could go up to 200mg, but to try 150 for a while. That did the trick, and after a while I was actually able to go back to 100mg again.

Ever since then, depending on how I feel, sometimes I'm on 100mg, and sometimes 125mg, and sometimes 150mg. But whenever I lower the dosage again, I do it very gradually. If I need to cut a pill in half for a 150mg dosage, I just cut it with scissors, and then file the sharp edges a bit with a nail file, since I have trouble swallowing pills anyway.

My doctor said if the Zoloft became ineffective, I could always be switched to another drug, such as Wellbutrin. After a period of time, if I wanted or needed to go back on Zoloft again, I was told that I could, because after being off it for a while, it would once again be more effective.

I've been on Zoloft for almost 20 years. No hair loss, no weight gain, no side-effects whatsoever. Just the desired effect, which is keeping the depression at bay.
Thank you. Your post was very informative - zuni bear

and helpful to me. I upped to 75 mg and can up again to 100 mg after a week, per MD. I guess they usually start out at 25 mg and go up weekly from there, if needed. I want to keep my depression at bay too. I hate not feeling motivated to do anything except sit on the couch and drink coffee (except when not transcribing).

Some people have to take them for life. I do, and I don't mind at all. It beats the alternative (chronic depression) by a mile.

Insurance helps with the expense. So do generics. So does Walmart. So does getting a senior discount, AAA discount, or AARP discount, if available, at the pharmacy.

Antidepressants really DO work. Sometimes it means you have to try different kinds, or a combination of them, or a combination of an SSRI and therapy in order to get the best result.

You obviously have never had true clinical depression (an imbalance of serotonin in the brain), or you wouldn't be making these statements about "changing your perspective on life", etc. DEPRESSION, and a lack of serotonin change a person's outlook on life. They don't do this consciously or on purpose, and it's not their fault.

Telling someone to "cheer up" or "get a grip", etc. is just as ignorant as telling someone who gets severe migraines "suck it up and take an aspirin - it's only a headache."

Unless you experience either of the above, you have no idea whatsoever what it's like, and how debilitating it can be. Don't go giving advice about things you don't understand.

There is no evidence any antidepressant - actually works??

I am living proof of it. I am on a combination of Wellbutrin & Zoloft. It has absolutely changed my life. I am happy for the first time in my life. I was always depressed, just incredibly sad ever since I can remember. Tried prayer, self-help books, positive attitude books, nothing helped. Finally, a doctor put me on Wellbutrin and Zoloft. It was a game changer. No zombie side effects. I just feel...happy. I always tell my doctor that I could be a poster child for both drugs. Tell the drug reps to call me.

I agree with the other posters who said that someone who says that antidepressants don't work has never had chronic depression, where there is not really anything in particular that is depressing me, I just feel so sad, anxious, extremely irritable, and hopeless and helpless constantly, when I'm not on an antidepressant. I tried going off all antidepressants about a year and a half ago and almost ruined my marriage with my negativity and irritability and anxiety. I have been on antidepressants for close to 20 years and will never try to go off them again.

I know people who have not tolerated antidepressants or who have not received any benefit from them and that's okay, but for me it has been a lifesaver!

Yes, they do work - Shelly

It can take a long time to find the right one for you. An antidepressant will work for one person and totally disagree with another person. It is unfortunate that some people have to go through multiple trials before finding that magic right pill, but definitely you must persist. The right pill can do wonders for you, and depression is a dangerous illness that should not be allowed to brew.

Zoloft or Lexapro - both good, but - Lexapro

very well. Always has. It doesn't necessarily give me "energy" per se, but helps to take away the lethargy that comes with a bad depressive episode.

I wonder if most of the online horror stories about withdrawal are written by people who went off their antidepressant cold turkey. If the doctor wants you off of it, it has to be done very gradually. I've been on it since the mid-1990's, and never had any problems with it.

I did, however, have withdrawal symptoms one time when I unintentionally went off it cold turkey when there was a mixup with the insurance company after I ran out of Zoloft. I was sure it'd be cleared up within a day or two, but it wasn't, and then it was a 3-day weekend. It only took about 4 days for me to hit bottom, and then 6 weeks of re-introducing the medication and being on disability from work to get back to normal again.

Now I re-order early, so there are a few left after each refill, and I keep an emergency supply for insurance snafus, or some emergency or disaster where I might not be able to refill the drug at a time when it would be most needed.

antidepressant without side effects - Shelly

I tried the tricyclics first, but they caused fatigue, slurred speech and dryness. Then I tried Effexor and found practically no side effects. A bit of a chill feeling at first but that was actually stimulating to get me going in the morning, so I got used to that. Some people have yawning with it. Otherwise, was very helpful for me.

From CIA Analyst, HOW Libyan Intelligence Works And Oct 03, 2012
"High-profile Republican politicians and their media surrogates are accusing President Obama and other top White House staff of "lying" to the public about last month's deadly assault on America's diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya. Donald Trump Works For The ClintonsJul 31, 2016
Why doI think this? 1.  Because they're friends, have been friends for years and Donald didn't throw his hair into the ring until he'd talked it over with Bill Clinton.  There's a documented 2-hour phone conversation with Bill Clinton prior to Trump infiltrating the GOP. 2.  It's not rocket science: Every time the polls get close, within a few points, Cheeto makes a yuuuuge offensive statement to the press .  He insults veterans, women, Americans of ...

I have done research on this company and it seems people are indeed making a lot of money and the wrap overall is touted as working to reduce fat in areas of the body. They also have other products for health.  This seems to be a pyramid scheme. Supposedly people are making 20 grand a month.
