Had general anesthesia today for polypectomy

Posted: Oct 26, 2013

Being an MT I should know this but it totally slipped my mind. Let me say I had a BP of 192/102, which was insane. The anesthesiologist seemed cheerful when he interviewed me before surgery and said he will still do the surgery. When they gave me an IV drip with some sedative in it before the anesthesia, I heard them say something about metoprolol. So when I woke up my BP was 120/40!!!! But I felt great. When I didn't expect when I woke up was coughing and coughing and having to blow my nose. They told me when you're under anesthesia they put you on a ventilator to help you breathe. My initial shock was, "Me? on a ventilator??" Yes, they have to put an ET tube in your throat and hook you up to a ventilator to put oxygen and air into your lungs and get rid of carbon dioxide and that helps excrete some mucous out of your lungs. And if you're a smoker, it's worse. I know you all know that already, but I was clueless today. But I feel great and yes I'm still coughing up some stuff so I'm cooking some water to get some steam in here. Percocet and Motrin helps you get through it. And honey and tea. thanks for listening. ;

So glad you are feeling better! - Christine

It's amazing when you think of what is being done when we are under anesthesia. After my two upper endoscopies I knew nothing of the procedure. I know the Versed takes away any memory of what went on, but I actually think now the patient basically sleeps during the procedure. It has certainly improved over the years, I am sure. So glad they got your pressure down, and glad it's over for you and went well.

Funny! - sm

I've totally blanked out like that before too. I had anesthesia when I had my wisdom teeth pulled and I asked the dentist why I shouldn't drink water beforehand. (Duh!) He knew I was a transcriptionist too and looked at me like I was nuts. =]

Glad your surgery went well and that you're recovering nicely.

Another thing you can do for the congestion is run a hot shower and steam up your bathroom and sit in there for a while (don't actually get in the water yet of course!).

High BP - MT headed

One reason for the high BP preop may have been your anxiety level; mine always shoots up like that (not that high, though) when I go to the doctor, etc. I had emergency surgery on my ankle a couple of years ago (tib-fib fracture/dislocation) and was so anxious in the ER holding area that I was shaking, I know my BP was through the roof but normal after surgery. I was given Fentanyl and morphine before surgery so that should give you an idea of my pain level. Smoking not only affects your respiratory status but also your circulation and ability to heal from surgery. They actually want you to cough to get that anesthesia out of your lungs, so that was a good thing. I remember everything that happened before and after but of course not during my surgery. I'm glad your procedure went well and that you are home. Get well soon.

General Questions On FlexibilityApr 05, 2010
I have recently been inquiring about a new career in MT.  I learned of this website and have been reading feverishly to become as informed as possible.  My question is this (which is one, of many!):  Is it flexible enough to do on a basis around a first and primary job that requires travel.  On the days that I'm home (which could be for 2-5 days in a row before traveling again) I would have all day dedicated to sitting at the computer and getting work done.  This i ...
