Where do these teachers come up with these ideas for projects? My 10-yo has to do a book report on Thomas Edison (he had to pick someone). What ever happened to the good old days where you read a book, wrote an essay and turned it in? Now he has to present his "report" orally in front of the class, dressed as his character. What do kids do whose parents don't have a suit and tie for their kid to wear? What if they pick Annie Oakley -- do they get to carry a gun to school? Why can't these teachers realize parents are strapped financially and can't just transform their kid into some character?
Earlier this year, my 13yo had to do a leaf project. He had to collect leaves from trees according to required characteristics of the leaf, including their environmental contribution to society, their reproductive traits, etc. Each leaf had to be labeled and placed in a scrapbook (that parents had to provide) along with a paragraph describing the required attributes of that leaf.
Shortly after the leaf project, my 13yo brings home an English project, in which he was to choose a "hero" and make a multimedia slide show. Are you freaking kidding me? I don't live in a high-class area where the schools have more money than brains, but I'm beginning to wonder just how much brains these teachers have. There are kids that do not have computers at home (although we are fortunate enough to have 1) and there wasn't enough time allotted in school for the project. On top of that, we had to purchase a jump drive for him so he could work on it at home and present it in class.
I have to wonder if this is how my parents felt, but I don't honestly remember having any type of assignment that cost money.
