teachers and their great projects!

Posted: Dec 12, 2010

Where do these teachers come up with these ideas for projects?  My 10-yo has to do a book report on Thomas Edison (he had to pick someone).  What ever happened to the good old days where you read a book, wrote an essay and turned it in?  Now he has to present his "report" orally in front of the class, dressed as his character.  What do kids do whose parents don't have a suit and tie for their kid to wear?  What if they pick Annie Oakley -- do they get to carry a gun to school?  Why can't these teachers realize parents are strapped financially and can't just transform their kid into some character?

Earlier this year, my 13yo had to do a leaf project.  He had to collect leaves from trees according to required characteristics of the leaf, including their environmental contribution to society, their reproductive traits, etc.  Each leaf had to be labeled and placed in a scrapbook (that parents had to provide) along with a paragraph describing the required attributes of that leaf.

Shortly after the leaf project, my 13yo brings home an English project, in which he was to choose a "hero" and make a multimedia slide show.  Are you freaking kidding me?  I don't live in a high-class area where the schools have more money than brains, but I'm beginning to wonder just how much brains these teachers have.  There are kids that do not have computers at home (although we are fortunate enough to have 1) and there wasn't enough time allotted in school for the project.  On top of that, we had to purchase a jump drive for him so he could work on it at home and present it in class.

I have to wonder if this is how my parents felt, but I don't honestly remember having any type of assignment that cost money.

Oh wait, it gets even worse as they get older. How about paying for field trips? - RoadRunnerMT

I have never in my life paid for a field trip until we moved into this specific school. Every trip they take whether a learning trip or not, we have to pay for it. My senior last year took one that was $27 to Medieval Times. My 2 middle school kids are going to the movies and to eat for a field trip at $10 each so $20 for me. Last month they went to a Historic town at $10 each. But they make sure the note says "sorry parents, no extras allowed". What the heck are these schools and teachers thinking? I don't have to money but would not want to embarrass my child and not send it with them and I sure many parents feel the same way!

Since coming back to public school, I feel like - FlaMT

I know how you feel. Homework and projects usually end up as "homework" for the parents more than anything else. My 12yo son came home with a paper cutout shaped like an ornament plastered with glitter...this was his science class assignment. Say it with me...WHAT????? Really educational there. And his writing assignment last week was to re-write The Polar Express to include their families. Waste.of.Time. IMHO

I pulled my oldest son (now 12) out of public school after he had to repeat 3rd grade (thanks FCAT) and struggled with 4th grade. We went the virtual school route for 6th grade. It was hard work (for both of us) but he did amazing and was above grade level when he took the FCAT at the end of the year. THEN I made the mistake of letting him go back to public school when he started middle school. Those teachers live in their own world. They are dumbing down our kids to the point where they won't even start on homework until the teacher says they can. These kids are all just robots that have no idea how to initiate anything or motivation to do anything above what is "passing". Heaven forbid I try to question something the teacher does! The teacher is always right and I have no idea what I'm talking about. My child that entered this year with enthusiasm and motivation has turned into a droid that can't think for himself, never questions anything, and isn't motivated to do anything beyond what is required. Yeah, ok he is on the Honor Roll, but they have such low standards, it's not hard to achieve that these days. These kids are going to be in for a shocking wake up call when they get to college or *gasp* try to get a job.

By Shaun Waterman THE WASHINGTON TIMESSenators diverted $2.6 billion in funds in a defense spending bill to pet projects largely at the expense of accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition and training for U.S. troops, including those fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an analysis. Among the 778 such projects, known as earmarks, packed into the bill: $25 million for a new World War II museum at the University of New Orleans and $20 million to launch an educational institute named a ...

Chicago Teachers On Strike-They Earn How Much????Sep 10, 2012
Must be nice to earn those wages and benefits without a care in the world for the students they're hurting. As teachers, they should understand that Chicagoans can't afford any more tax hikes when a lot of them are unemployed.  It's just another show of greed and "The h---- with you, I want mine attitude." Where will it end? When Chicago claims bankruptcy?  Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said teachers had no choice but to strike, despite "intense but produ ...

Pennsylvania Teachers Get Training In Bowing To Jun 11, 2015
Fifty or so teachers and administrators with the Lebanon School District in Pennsylvania, including the superintendent, were just given a day of specialized training on Islam – at taxpayers’ expense – that wrapped with them hitting the floors of a local mosque, in the required shoeless fashion, and partaking of the faith’s call to prayer. Can you say what the –? Or better yet, how about imaging this “what if” scenario: Fifty or so teachers and administrators with one Pennsy ...

Poll: Who Is The More Whiney Profession: Nurses Or Teachers?Feb 11, 2016
After the barrage of FB posts complaining that these superbowl football stars get paid millions yet teacher make (they say) peanuts i'm seriously annoyed.  2 year level RNs were previously the most annoying in my opinon, whining about pay when most make $20+ an hour yet have a terrible attitude, think they know more than doctors and the public in general.  Caveat: This does not include bachelors/masters level RNs.  For some reason it's the ones with the 2 year degree tha ...

Matt Damon Defends Teachers Against 'Sh***y' Reason.tv CameramanAug 03, 2011
Matt Damon had some strong words at last Saturday's Save Our Schools march in Washington, D.C. Following his keynote address, the actor took offense to a Reason.tv reporter who contended that, as opposed to the environment faced by teachers in a tenure system, the lack of job security in acting functions as an incentive for hard work. Here's what Damon had to say: So you think job insecurity is what makes me work hard? I want to be an actor. That’s not an incentive. That& ...

Saw Shrek 4 In 3-D It Was GreatJun 07, 2010
Summer is coming and we live in Florida where it is hot and rainy.  My son was bored and I was too... so we found a movie theater locally which did not cost an arm and a leg.  I took him to see Shrek 3-D and it was GREAT! Highly recommended.  I can see how some people might get a little nauseous with the 3-D because sometimes it is hard to take especially with buttered popcorn in the stomach! But it really was great in 3-D.  It really reminded me of the old "Disney."  As ...

Today's Another Great DayOct 11, 2012
Got the car fixed - several things wrong with it - so hopefully fingers crossed it will make it through the winter.  The whole winter.  And there's another car here, so if worse came to worst, I could take that. Moral of the story - a big stress is when "worse comes to worst" is on the horizon, and you have to live with that possibility day in and day out.  So one aspect of that is gone. Bought a nice velveteen-ish jacket at Salvation Army - eight dollars - it is pitiful wh ...

A Great RecipeJan 01, 2013
