Oh, great
Posted: Dec 13, 2013
Our favorite hot sauce may now become either no longer available, or will be made in another country, because some people in the state it's made are "sensitive" to the smell.
Okay, there goes another American job/factory and more people laid off because of someone's "sensitivity." If it is made out of the country, the price will go waaay up, not to mention, if it's made in China, goodness knows what they'll put in it.
It's Sriracha---we love it. We grow our own habaneros so we can make our own hot sauce, but the point is, many jobs lost because some people are "sensitive." Yeesh.
And of course, now there's a movie which I'm sure will inflate the whole thing, as if it's bad for one's health.
What do you think? Have we not gone too far?;
Too far. Too much of this "sensitive" garbage. - SM

I'm sensitive to this witch hunt behavior. Someone whines that they're "sensitive" and everyone else has to knuckle under and accept whatever the "sensitive" wants done.
No matter what it is, somebody's going to whine that they're "sensitive" about it, so are we supposed to get rid of everything, all people live in glass bubbles and be fed intravenous protein liquids as to not offend or upset or contaminate someone else's environment?
All this "allergy" crap is tiresome, hearing about it all the time; someone's "allergic" so everyone else has to do without.
Someone doesn't want to hear the word "Christmas" because they are offended, so many public schools can't have Christmas activities, it all has to be "season" or "holiday" or some such thing.
What a load of crap. People need to toughen up.
From what I read the plant built too close to people - and the smell coming from that
[ In Reply To ..]
has made people sick, upset, disturbed, whatever. It might be akin as to living close to a paper plant with the smell that comes from that. I do know it is about the people living closeby. Whether they knew about the plant prior to its being built or not, I don't know but I would think if I had to be close enough to actually smell strong peppers my nose would be offended also. Just me, might be others.
Well, I have to wonder... - OP

...if the factory was there first or not. Me, personally, would never move anywhere near a factory.
FYI: The smell of hot peppers cooking is NOT akin to chlorine or other chemicals. I don't imagine it's bad for anyone's physical health. I can see it as a bit of a irritant, but from what I understand, it's just the smell that is annoying people. It's in California, I'm in Florida.
I personally love the smell of hot pepper sauce cooking--the garlic, the peppers, spices, yum, but if I didn't, I doubt I'd rally to have an entire factory closed down, unless it was truly bad for my health.
They can build the plant in my backyard if they need to... - Have to have my Sriracha!

Re: "I personally love the smell of hot pepper sauce cooking"
Right, when you CHOOSE to smell it - going out to eat, in your own kitchen, someone else's - you're not living with it on a daily basis. It's not a whiff now and again, passing by.
It might even affect the ability of neighbors to sell their homes, i.e., the smell might put off potential buyers. That's a hit to your wallet right there.
Well... - OP

I guess I just think it's sad that soooo many people hate big business enough that they want to see the U.S. produce nothing anymore and be dependent on other countries (including communist countries) for food and every-day items, like food, utensils, etc. This isn't just a Sriracha situation.
Even though we make our own Sriracha-type sauce, we did buy a couple of bottles just in case.
So, if has to move, you have a choice, you can either - buy it or not, no one makes you stop using it
[ In Reply To ..]
I remember my father talking about only buying Chevrolet products, cars, trucks because "they are made in the USA." People are under the impression that things that are supposed to be US made sometimes have other parts made in ohhh, communist countries. If you want it and it comes from somewhere else guess you just have to make a choice, right? Below is what I posted from another article and why people are complaining. I like hot sauce but if I never had again think my life would not be over.
Neighbors to the plant testified that they were experiencing breathing difficulties from capsaicin mist. Capsaicin is an active compound in chili peppers that is irritating to humans and other mammals.
Capsaicin also ingredient in pain relief rubs/lotions - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
i.e., it's an active ingredient when it comes to humans (and other animals, I would assume), not an inert ingredient.
Big business is not the issue here - wheres_my_job

It has to do with residential-commercial conflict, a zoning kind of thing. Things like sludge processing, hog farms, greenhouses, etc can all have issues re: residential-commercial tug of war.
Oh please, it's not about big business. - sm

Have you ever been pepper sprayed in the face? Do that, then come back and try to turn this into a big business issue.

I live in South Georgia across the road from a huge produce farm's carrot facility. Last March I began noticing a very strong odor of chlorine that made my eyes burn and water, throat sore, chest hurt and a rash on my head, and everybody that came over complained about it. I called the farm, they wouldn't admit it was chlorine, which they soak their "baby" carrots in while processing them. That's the white stuff you see on baby carrots, by the way, so don't eat them. After a whole summer of having the EPA come and smell the area (of course not my yard, just walked around over there) several times and finally getting the facility's manager and chemicals manager over here, they got a whiff and "oh yeah, we smell it, it's the retention pond." Oh even better, chlorine mixed with rotting organic material produces toxic fumes worse than chlorine alone. Most days it was so bad I couldn't go outside or open up the house. I contacted an environmental attorney in Atlanta and sent pictures of my head along with the log I'd been keeping as to how bad the smell was, when it started and stopped, what direction the wind was blowing, etc. The carrot season ended in June, started back up in October and voila there's no carrot smell so far. Whatever they did to clean the place, which they call "maintenance", seems to have taken care of it for a while. If it starts up again, I'll be on them like their stink is on me. Georgia has no air quality laws so the EPA would have to get them for something else - like another retention pond - which the EPA water division had cited them for already four years ago. You did not mention how close you are to that facility, how much the smell affects your life, just that your sauce may go away. Awwww, cry me a river.
Used to live on St. Simons Island and if the - wind blows wrong way

then the air stinks from the paper plant close by. I could just imagine if there was something in the air that caused headaches, eyes to hurt and so on.
I live about 15 miles southeast of Valdosta. - There is a paper mill somewhere around

here, west, and I get whiffs of that too. At least I think it's the paper mill but not sure, it smells like Elmer's glue. Thanks for reading my post.

No, I was here before the carrot crap across the - road. sm

We were told the land was being farmed but no mention of the carrot facility until it started being built. No, I am not selling; they can put filters on their exhaust fans and do other things to remedy the situation according to the EPA. The carrot facility is about 100 yards from my house and the county or EPA does/says nothing about the distance. Bill Gates owns the farm, he can afford a filter.
Things you learn from reading, never heard about - a stinking carrot farm
[ In Reply To ..]
and had no idea. You know if you smell a carrot not that much smell to them, not a bad smell but I guess with all they do there, could see what the issue would be. Also had no idea Bill was in the carrot business.

The last bag of "regular" baby carrots I bought WAS the last. I had been noticing somewhat of a chlorine taste to them, and the last time I bought them they were so bad I ate two and threw the bag out. The taste was terrible. From then on nothing but organic.

They lived there before it was built. It is in a mostly residential area.
The problem is not just the "smell." It is the capsaicin vapors from the peppers that are so strong they are burning eyes, skin, and mucous membranes.
If you don't understand what this is, you have never cut or cooked with the stronger peppers like habanero. You literally have to wear gloves and be upwind of them. It will burn your skin, burn your eyes, and trigger asthma. Even after you wash your hands, it remains and you can burn your eyes by rubbing them.
Whatever you do, don't use water when cleaning - those peppers. sm

If you clean them without water, the fumes won't bother you. I didn't believe it until I tried it.

Always find out if the property is zoned commercial or residential. Of course, zoning can be changed, but if you find out your lot/house is near a commercial lot, for sure I would not buy. I would only hope that it's zoned 1-family. We had a situation here where they tried to change the zoning to multi-family, and they lost but only because of water flow---they have to consider good drainage where I live in FL.
If it's zoned commercial and/or industrial, stay away.
That's a nice theory, but there are no zoning laws - in my county.
