homemade household products

Posted: Aug 4, 2013

Has anyone investigated or implented the use of homemade products - cleaning products, laundry soap.....the list I've found on the internet is endless.  Interested in if anyone had attempted or are using the cheaper alternatives, not to mention healtier, especially when saving money in our profession is so important.  Woud love to hear some ideas!!!

I use vinegar all the time - Love it

I use vinegar for almost everything. My roommate isn't so enamored of it, but I love it.

I use a spray bottle and mix vinegar and water and a couple of drops of Mrs. Meyers cleaning solution to cut the vinegar smell and it works like a charm.

One thing to keep in mind for you vinegar users out there if anyone uses Dr. Bronner's, DO NOT mix it with vinegar. You'll see a lot of laundry and/or cleaning recipes that say mix Dr. Bronner's and water and vinegar and it's the last thing you want to do. Dr. Bronner's is saponified oil and chemically it's a base. When you mix vinegar in with it, you're mixing an acid with your base, so you're taking your saponified oil back to it's natural state - basically unsoaping it and returning it to oil

I learned that from Lisa Bronner's cleaning blog on the Dr. Bronner's site.

I love Dr. Bronner's as well. It's pricey for a bottle of it, but a little goes a long way and you can use it for EVERYTHING and it's about as natural a cleaning product as you can get.

Also fabulous reading! Always loved Dr. Bronners. - The label is very inspirational

and as a cleaner all over the house. Heat it to take off soap scum. Kirk's castille soap and witch hazel as a face toner, light olive oil mixed with grapeseed oil on my face instead of oil of olay. I'm allergic to everything. On the positive side I'm 57 and I look 40 (that's not my opinion that's other people's, cos I think I look 100).

I' making dryer balls for my dryer. About 3 packages of 100% wool wound into a baseball/softball size, add essential oil of your choice, have to put in pantyhose and tie off to wach the dryer balls 2-3 time until they felt and don't unravel. I'll have 8 when I'm done winding all the yard. Dries MUCH faster than just the dryer so it cuts dryer costs. Contemplating making homemade laundry soap - borax, grated ivory soap and washing soda (call can be found at Walmart. Tried of paying a premium for laundry soap!! Look for an idea for furniture dusting/polishing. Moisturizer I've been told the best is straight coconut oil, a little greasy but really good! Any other ideas out there??

Terrif money saving idea - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Wouldn't it be nice to start an MT page or category on this site where MTs could post their ideas and how-to's on saving money?!?!?! We're all in the same boat and cutting back on the expenses we can would be wonderful I think!!

Why assume that "we" are all in the same - boat because we are not

[ In Reply To ..]
It just rubs me in the totally wrong way for people to assume. I am not broke and do not cut back on expenses and haven't for years. I love ideas about using ordinary things around the home for your laundry, cleaning and the like but "all in the same boat?" Not.

Ooookie dokie, well now that you've cleared that up... - I like the poster's idea

When someone makes an "all in the same boat comment" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If I don't happen to be riding in that same boat, I just don't respond, no offense taken. With this day and time, if you are fortunate enough that you DON'T have to pinch pennies, then count your blessings. Money is harder to come by and prices are higher for most, not just MTs.

Excusez-Moi - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Count your blessings because in this day and age you could easily find yourself not so financial cushy. This was obviously not addressed to the affluent. Please excuse my faux pas. It seems that passing on replying would've been a better choice if this post didn't reflect your current situation. I guess there's always one who wants to point out that ANYTHING could be taken as "offensive". LOL
No, I dislike people assuming anything at all - Not in the same boat

I went to Wal-Mart one day, bought some artifical flowers. Checking out the cashier said "Oh, you having a big party?" Told him ,"No, those are to go on my family's graves." That was the truth but you see what assuming does?

Lighten up. There are TONS more things in life to upset you, serious ones!! He was just trying to be friendly - that's his job. If that upsets you to that degree maybe you should take inventory of your anger and impatience of others who also share your world.
Really? I was not mad and why would you - once again, assume
[ In Reply To ..]
that I was angry? If I had been angered by his statement I would have conveyed that to the manager. You again have assumed something you know nothing about other than what is in your mind (again wrong when assuming).
assuming - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Have you maybe (not assuming here) that someone's comments or in this case a post was not meant to be assuming only friendly or helpful?? Life is full of educated assumptions, I do it, you do, everybody does it - no offense intended by any means. I didn't ASSUME you PERSONALLY were struggling financially. It was simply an idea for those of us that might be struggling. This is a board for opinions and thoughts. If they don't apply to you I would suggest moving on to another post where you don't feel someone has personally assumed something about YOU.
Not nice to tell a person to "lighten up." - nm

He probably wasn't assuming - Customer service
[ In Reply To ..]
People in customer service TRY to be friendly (I know some of them don't) but the guy could probably care less what you intended to do with the flowers, was just trying to be friendly and have some small talk with you. His "assumptions" (or lack thereof) didn't affect your purchase, didn't change your plans for the flowers, so you said...."Do you see what assuming does" and I HONESTLY didn't see what it did....seems very trivial to me, just saying, NOT trying to offend, so please don't "assume" I am:)
You take things pretty personally. - sm.
[ In Reply To ..]
My advice would be to lighten up a little. We ALL deal with assumptions, but how you handle it is what's important.

The way you felt the need to point out your financial situation just made it seem like maybe you're trying a little too hard to separate yourself from those who need to pinch pennies.

If you would have just ignored it, no one would have thought twice. Now we're all looking at you like "what's her problem."

So my advice would be to let things roll of your back and people will respond well to that.

I have watched or pinched pennies in the past - but everyone and I mean
[ In Reply To ..]
everyone has something that probably just rubs them the wrong way and that is how I feel when someone "boxes" everyone into their box, making a broad statement that "we" are all struggling. I have a very close friend that is trying to get a business up and going now and I am helping them to do that. I am sure she is probably counting her pennies and I have no reason to "separate" myself from her or her family just because they are not where they want to be financially. My pet peeve (and surely others have their own, right?) is for people to "assume" anything. Now gone from here.
Pet peeve - We all have them
[ In Reply To ..]
You see, you COULD have said...."My pet peeve is when someone makes assumptions" or even make your own category..."Let's talk about pet peeves" rather than jumping in on a conversation that was clearly not even about YOU or your pet peeves.

I have a pet peeve that I cannot STAND when someone speaks using incorrect grammar. It makes me CRINGE, but I never, ever, ever just start correcting strangers about it or throwing MY "craziness" at them. An un-popped zit is also a pet peeve of mine. Even if I am in a line at a store if someone has a big ole' zit I just wanna reach out and squeeze that sucker or tell them to cover it, but I DON'T, because we ALL have our own side of crazy (ooops, I just categorized people again and made assumptions, oh lawd) LOL, anyways....... :-)
Yes, I get pet peeves, but acting out on them - just makes *you* look crazy.
[ In Reply To ..]
And I say that with all the kindness in the world--jumping on someone for making an assumption (when maybe they're just making conversation, as in your party example) just makes it look like you have issues. My first thought when I read your post was that someone hit a nerve with the financial comment and I wondered why felt the need to clarify your financial situation.

I get that the issue wasn't finances--it was assumptions. But human nature being what it is, you kind of looked like money was a sore issue for you.

If it were me, I'd reign it in about what bugs me. I don't want people wondering what's wrong with me when I jump on them for a comment they obviously meant no harm by. It's more important to look at the person's intentions than to nit-pick the things they said wrong.

and continue to do so. I, for one, am grateful for any tips on saving I can get. As to your "thing" about assumptions, you might want to ask yourself what your payoff is from being so sensitive? Does that really work for you? Just asking (not assuming).

pretty personally." I am starting to see their point about assumptions.
Yes, I did. It's what we do based on peoples' - behavior.
[ In Reply To ..]
We size them up and make assumptions, based on the information they give us with their words and actions. You do it, too.
Now you are assuming I do it too. Well, - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I am not a shrink and it is not my place or job to "size up" anyone.
We all do it. Sorry. The brain fills in the - blanks using info we have.
[ In Reply To ..]
It's not necessarily a bad thing, unless you tend to always make bad assumptions or make no effort to learn if what you've deduced is actually true or not.

But if someone makes a statement like "look at that ugly yellow jacket," one might assume the person doesn't like yellow. Or maybe that style of jacket. Or WHATEVER. It's how our brains are wired. We're problem solvers. It doesn't mean we're always right, and of course we know that we're not always right. But that doesn't stop it from happening. It just means we choose not to act on it.

Any time we make a statement like "it seems as though" or "I think maybe," we're assuming things. We all make educated guesses.
I guess people should just never say anything - around you...ever...at all.
[ In Reply To ..]
for fear of offending you with the most innocuous comments.

Get over yourself. Seriously. Please.

Guess what...we don't.

I'm secure financially as well, but - not b/c of transcription

So I took "we're all in the same boat" as more a sign of camaraderie. I honestly don't understand getting all snippy over a statement like that. No one actually cares about our financial statuses, we're just trying to help each other...

A good book that I have liked is called Making It: Radical Homeec--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I downloaded it onto my Kindle and it has many ideas on a variety of projects, from household cleaners to beauty products, cooking projects, etc. Some of these ideas are not only about saving money but also about environmental impact. Vinegar is very much a staple in my house, it works great for hardwater issues.

I like coconut oil for my lips, feet, hair and hands but it would never work for my face. Cheap olive oil is great for shaving (for men too), save the good extra-virgin for cooking though.

I have not cared for homemade laundry detergent. It could be just the hardwater but I never felt it cleaned as well as the stuff I can buy so I do not bother making it any longer.

I would still look for bargains. Why pay more and give big profits to the corporate fascists running this country. It's a matter of principal really. The mark up on goods can be 500% in some cases. No matter what our economic status is, we all need to educate ourselves about what is a fair price and what is not.

Household ChoreesMar 14, 2013
Hi, I just wanted to ask others, is the woman in your household responsible for all cooking, cleaning, child care, etc., or is it a combined effort with the significant other? My husband was raised with five sisters, so he did no household chores growing up.  He had to help his dad outside.  Now, him and I both work the exact same schedule and we make very close to the exact same pay, except for some evenings/nights I actually have to work late.  He never works late.  During ...

Homemade WineApr 03, 2011
Hey my fellow MTs.... Years ago I ran into a man that made homemade wine.  He would take grape concentrate and about 7-9 pounds of sugar, yeast and water and mix that up into a 5 gallon container.  Then he would take a balloon and rubber band and seal the mixture.  He said the balloon would inflate and once it desufflated the wine would be ready..usually a month to a month and a half.  I cannot remember his exact recipe, but the wine he made was so good and very very cheap t ...

I am so dreading it.  There are 4 of us siblings.  I'm executor.  Everyone is okay with having an auction, but first they want go to through everything.  I just know after that, there won't be anything left to auction and I'll be stuck finding new homes for the rest. What I'd like to do is set a limit to everyone being allowed to have a random number of items, perhaps 10, that they would like to have. The rest if they want it bad enough could be bought at ...
