desk out of a door

Posted: Oct 23, 2009

Have any of you ever built a good desk out of a door?  My desk is on its last legs.  I am remodeling and have several average doors that I could use.   What height would you go with?  What would you use to hold the desk up - fild cabinets, saw horses, etc?   Any ideas out there?   I would love it if I could come up with something interesting.   TIA.

Quite a few pictures and a couple of plans for making a door into a desk. If it were me, I'd probably use file cabinets of some kind so I could have some drawers and I would probably attach an adjustable keyboard drawer. Good luck and good idea for reusing stuff. =)

So many ideas out there...sm - recycler

A friend was given a door desk a long time ago, so, yeah, the idea has been around a while. Kudos to you for trying to recycle! AS for the height, I think that has to be an individual thing and you need to tinker with that. I would prefer file cabinets as "legs," just like the other poster, for the drawers, but you could also check the Ikea online catalog for ideas. Have fun!

Mine sits on 2 file cabinets--which makes it a good bit higher than a standard desk, so my work chair is actually a drafting chair. My foot pedal sits on a little stool/platform underneath that my dad originally knocked together to put under the piano so my mother's piano students' feet wouldn't just dangle.

I don't use a keyboard drawer because I can't work without having my wrists supported. I just belly up to the edge of the door/desk and my wrists rest on a beanbag wrist rest in front of the keyboard.

Another possible idea - Works for me

When the kids finally left the homestead, I turned the larger bedroom into my office and had the smaller one set up for weekend visits.  Well, one of the kids moved back home, so I had to move out of the big bedroom.  Since I still wanted to save the smaller bedroom for weekend visits and since my daughter assures me she will be gone in a month or two (8 months and counting), I turned the smaller bedroom into a “temporary” office.  I placed a heavy door on top of the bed and a bookcase in the closet.  I moved the bed so that when I turn around in my chair, I can reach the bookcase for reference materials, etc.  When visitors come, I throw the computer into the closet on top of the bookcase, close the closet door, and take the door to the garage.  Plus, I can always crawl into the bed if I need a quick nap.  LOL.

Love it!! (NM) - MT!

Door-to-door Mail Delivery Could Be Phased Out Jul 31, 2013
This isn't my first post on this. Did I have it right or what? 1. First came laws requiring the 200-year-old United States Postal Service to start paying entirely for itself, NO taxpayer support. 2. That didn't work. It COULD support itself. So second came a number of laws designed to cripple our USPS, including some by making it illegal to deliver certain types of high-profit deliveries -- benefiting giant private delivery corporations that couldn't compete with the highl ...

Okay, How Does One Keep A Cat Off One's Desk?Oct 05, 2010
I have a kitten and she loves to sit and nap on my desk which seemed cute at first, but not so much when I find my cable modem hanging by the cables and cords off the side of my desk and find my mail sorter laying in the floor with my bills scattered every where and it really isn't cute when I'm typing a stat report and she decides that is the perfect time to sit directly in front of my monitor and groom herself.  I put in the floor repeatedly through the day to no avail.  I& ...

What Sitting At Desk All Day Does To UsAug 15, 2015
I bet I'm not the only MT who has near-debilitating pain in the "sitz bones," aka ischial tuberosity pain.  It's directly related to the fact that I sit all day long at my keyboard.  I've tried buying ergonomic chairs and expensive seat cushions, adjusting my desk, sitting up as straight as I can, all to no avail.  I've even had 2 rounds of corticosteroid injections in both ischial tuberosities, right and left.  Ahhhh.....the effects of the steroid injecti ...

Any Suggestions For RV Laptop Desk For RV'ing?May 03, 2013
I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions.  We have a dinette in our RV (which is too high for comfortable typing height), and we also have a sofa, which is very comfy.  I'mtrying to find a portable, fold-up, table that goes low enough to use it sofa height and can come close enough to be above my lap, not out to the edge--want to sit back on the sofa basically.  Has anybody found anything besides a Tablemate, which I was afraid wa ...

Knocking On Your DoorJun 08, 2013
There's a discussion on the Faith Board about religious solicitations at one's house and how they feel about it. I thought I'd take a non-relgious discussion here to see how you all feel about lawn people selling their product, or people otherwise selling a product or service without calling first.  I find it quite scary, actually.  I don't know who these people are.  How do you feel? ...

Would Like To Have Guardenship Of My Next DoorMay 13, 2014
I have 4 indoor cats, never outside. Our community has a no animal outside policy. My next door neighbor's cat thinks he belongs here. He stays here almost 24/7 at my back door, at my front door, looks in the windows at my cats and I feel so sorry for it. I have fed it, I have given it treats as I do my own. It seems so starved for affection and my heart just aches seeing it outside plus the fact we have coyotes in our neighborhood plus other animals that would like to have this little on o ...

leave my house key with her just in case. I have animals here at home and my husband is home like every other day as far as the watering and feeding things. She and I basically share "her" cat. She lets him be an inside/outside wanderer and he comes to my house and gets treats. I have talked with her occasionally over the years, never visited in her home, she has been in mine once. She is a part-time RN in NICU here at one of our close by hospitals so pretty responsible. I would love to be a ...

Undocumented Immigrants (ILLEGAL ALIENS) Line Up For Door Opened By ObamaDec 15, 2014
LOS ANGELES — They pushed strollers, tugged toddlers and streamed into the convention center in the heart of this city on Sunday, thousands of immigrants here illegally and anxious to find out if they could gain protection from deportation under executive actions by President Obama. The crowd, waiting in a long snaking line to check in, was drawn by an information session organized by advocacy groups offering people initial assessments to see if they meet the requirements to apply to ...
